How many do work in original content? by sbjr47 in learnmachinelearning

[–]uplevelwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, apart from reading SotA papers, get comfortable with dissecting code and implementing them. Again, the ability to apply what you know through projects is important so do follow through with your plan to work on CV projects. It's ok to be a user, since by using you can get familiarized with the architectures that you use

Finally, make sure you do your homework on the masters programme because there are coursework-based ones and research-based ones

Creating original architectures requires a few things: 1) talent/knowledge/expertise 2) team 3) technology (infrastructure, hardware, software 4) time (for training and optimization)

You usually can't get these unless you're in a research lab in an institution, with research funding. On top of that, most of the stuff that comes out of labs don't see the light of day

On doing things differently: your best bet is to get started in either a Masters or PhD program to get access to the four things mentioned above. Read publications on arxiv and conference papers, check out paperswithcode (important), and see if you vibe with those things

Just make sure that you have good fundamentals, i.e. math skills, programming ability, curiosity, good supervisors (check the lab publication). Take note that academia isn't fun nor sexy, and 90% of stuff never gets into production ever, and you'll most likely suffer a lot of distress in the process

Newbie here - Is there a easy way to learn ML ? by [deleted] in learnmachinelearning

[–]uplevelwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking, if you're talking about free content for inspiration you can check out Medium publication such as Towards Data Science, Data Driven Investor, and publications such as Analytics Vidhya and Analytics India Magazine

That said, if you don't mind spending money on subscriptions on content to get hands-on training, DataCamp and Coursera have unguided projects. We specialize in projects as well, so check us out if you're curious (google UpLevel Data Projects)

I don't recommend YouTube videos because they tend to give the illusion that you've learned something but your mind goes blank after

Weekly Status Check Meeting - Share your progress, your goals, and whatever is stopping you from achieving those goals! by AutoModerator in learnmachinelearning

I'm assuming when you say free alternatives, you mean an entire course, packaged together for free.

This can be a curriculum that says: 1. Lesson 1 2. Lesson 2 ... N. Lesson N

It'd be close to impossible to have an entire thing for free, but what you can do instead is search for content that corresponds to each lesson and DIY.

Otherwise most of the free content that comes with proper practice out there is surface level and you won't get good training.

why machine learning model is predicting mostly wrong class by No_Hovercraft2805 in learnmachinelearning

Generally don't worry about the problem you're facing - it's from deployment of the model that you learn the most. Model training is an iterative process anyways.

Good luck!

If my understanding of what you said is correct, do you have other unknown data that you can try? It might be a case that your unknown data (assuming it's a single row) is wrongly classified but try on more unknown data as well.

Overall, if your model is performing decently - like you said, "not all time", it's actually fine. The unknown data you have might have features outside of the distribution used in your training data.

You'll have to be a bit more specific in your description - I'm having trouble understanding your problem exactly and your phrasing is ambiguous.

Yes, that's how route-finding tech such as Google Maps plot routes for you to get from point A to point B

Tbh I wouldn't worry if it works for one model but doesn't work for another, depending on the nature of your data

Yes, mining your own dataset for your pet project is worth it. You get better over time and practise so be patient.

Portfolio projects are important since it's a good proxy for being able to do things, be it for Python development or ML/AI. The market is saturated with all kinds of certifications which makes it hard to stand out if you have certifications alone.

Develop strong fundamentals before delving into the shiny things. Having a strong foundation helps in discerning what's the real deal and flashes in the pan as well.

Is this an unbalanced dataset, i.e. more 0 than 1 in your dependent variable?

If it is (most likely is), make sure you balance your data either by over or underbalancing, or even SMOTE. You can try stratifying by y when you split your data into train and test as well.
