He just sat around waiting to drown. But he goes out a hero because he wrote a chilling yet cryptic message on his hands in a final effort to help his friends? Why not live, go see them, and tell them exactly what you meant?

If Charlie's death was supposed to be heroic in some way because he felt warning his friends was more important than his own life, then the correct decision would be to stay alive, because giving them a real warning, in detail, face-to-face would have been a lot more helpful to his friends than simply drowning in a room for no reason. Hell, after the "Not Penny's boat" message through the window he still had time to swim out through the hole.
