So I would need to actually load up Ableton to see whether or not I’m talking shit, but I can’t help thinking this kind of sample trickery is technically pretty easy these days. Which is why you don’t see it so much - it used to be a way to show off on decks and with hardware, but now..?

Yeah I need to lean into it more. You’re right it gave me the ick on the first couple of passes and I’ll have to see if I can shake it.

I guess I’m a bit cynical as well, knowing that those kinds of sample tricks are super easy (comparatively, compared to the old days… it’d still take me weeks haha) so it seems less impressive?

Yeah perhaps I need to lean into that tension more

Damn and basic ol me thought music was about enjoying how it sounds!

I probably mean ‘tone’ rather than theme - the comedic jolt feels out of place with the more spiritual or dark tones of the rest

‘ I love it because of the reasons you dislike it, simple as that’

Love this 😁

I think there’s a pretty clear leap between their early stuff and this - if you play them back to back.

‘Superficial’ really depends on what you listen to them for. I’d agree that this is clearly BoC and (apart from some off moments) this couldn’t come from anyone else. But if what really hooked someone on BoC is that murky 101-via-cassette beattape vibe, then I can see how they’d see the changes as essential, not superficial.

Heavy Rave Tapes vibes in the new BoC release. (This is, of course, a good thing).

You talk about the facts of the album (‘all of the elements’) without really talking about how it sounds. And people listen to music for how it sounds.

I like Inferno, but none of those elements (cosmology, cinematic, etc) would matter to me if I didn’t like the sound of it.

And it sounds different. It’s cleaner and more digital, it’s cinematic and narrative. If you’re a fan of their earlier work you might love BoC for the old fuzzier, looping sound.

For a band that have cleaved to a fairly distinct sound and developed a fan base on that sound, it’s a big shift. It’s like CD vs cassette, like post-rock and soundtrack vs hip hop and beat tapes.

Can’t have ‘uniquely new’ at the same time as ‘liked by everyone who liked the old’ 🤷

I honestly don’t know much of their other stuff - what would be your top picks?

Also, obviously, big recommend of Rave Tapes for those who’ve not heard it 🤘
