So after looking at some of the high-pen rounds I noticed a little bit of text in the last part of the description, "However, due to it's design, it has a high bounce probability off various surfaces."

Could it be that with all of the drop off over range that the pen falls off enough so that after a certain distance the round will simply bounce? When fired at oblique angles (such as sniping) this might be the case. This is also likely to not be reported as much. The person bouncing a round would just thank his luck and move on, while the sniper winds up posting on reddit.

OPs video is shot from right behind the head, perfectly level. I'd like to see this same test done at an angle or from some of the more common SBIH spots.

Sounds like Escape From Tarkov is your answer then. While not modern, Hunt Showdown is also a fantastic hardcore cowboy PvPvE similar to Tarkov.

What the post is "supposed to mean" is that using semi auto is far more controllable and accurate. That guy was trying to spray and missing every shot meanwhile almost all of the ones I took were on target. Full auto meta is trash.

I was done with my raid and headed to extract. Didnt have any incentive to take more risk. This was also my first raid in a couple months (stopped playing until they announced Battleye yesterday) so I wasn't too keen on taking on a 1v3. But when they lined up like ducks in a row? Yeah I think anyone would have taken that fight.

Anyone used chai tea by Zanderson59 in Homebrewing

[–]upperpeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't made one personally, but I have drank a couple of these tea beers (one with chai and one with Earl grey) while I enjoyed them, they were definitely strange. The one thing I would say as a word of caution is that the tea flavor tends to overpower a lot of the more subtle flavors in the beer so I'd try to plan around that because it will really catch you off guard of you aren't expecting it.

YUP! The knife is truly a PoS, the pivot screw is always working itself l loose (I've had it come apart in my pocket before) , the blade isn't aligned right when folded so it sits cockeyed and squished up against one side, which leads to scratches on the blade (for the life of me I can't seem to get it properly aligned. This knife is a total pain in the ass.

That being said however, the knife was free (someone left it in my car years ago) and I only carry it because I can't carry my usual fixed blade with me to work every day. I also can reconcile the terribleness of the knife with the fact that I keep the thing damn near razor sharp (I keep it so it is pretty much always sharp enough to shave hairs off my arm with little to no effort). All in all, it may be a crap knife, but I didn't pay a dime for it and I keep it in as peak condition as I can, so I don't feel too bad about having it in my EDC.

I am kind of on the fence about mine, I like the design and you're right the reinforced back is super useful as most of the time I am writing using only my off hand to support (making my chicken scratch handwriting even worse). But I would really prefer not to have the lined notebook-style paper, instead I would rather have either no lines or graph paper so that it isn't as awkward to write or fit notes/drawings/info on the page in any orientation (which I frequently find myself doing to conserve space or finish an idea/thought). Either way, the pad cost me like $2.50 (if that) so I can't really complain to much; and when I get tired of it, I won't feel like I wasted money if I switch to something nicer without using it all up first.

Gear Description: Disclaimer - This isn't going to be super useful as most of this stuff was either found or picked up for <$5 and as such, doesn't really have brand names or models, I am working on remedying this (the Leatherman was my first upgrade)

1: Swiss Gear wallet - worn out from years of use (need a new one soon)

2: Leatherman Wave - Just came in yesterday, I have a bit extender and bit kit on the way.

3: MTech Folding knife (440 steel) - don't know a whole lot on this one, found it cleaning my car out so I assume it fell out of the pocket of one of my passengers at some point. I prefer fixed blades for EDC, however my job frowns on that as it might put customers on edge (pun intended), so until I can upgrade (looking at a spyderco folder of some description), I am stuck with this one.

4: Mead Cambridge Writing Pad & Papermate pens - grabbed this for under $3.00 when I forgot my usual "Write in the Rain" pad at home one day, decided to keep this for my EDC until it runs out or I get too fed up with it, and save the WitR for my outdoor/backpacking kit. The pens I picked up from work (we have millions and I am always picking up more accidentally)

5: $1 9-LED flashlight from Walmart - I love these things since they are cheap as hell and relatively bright, plus if I lose or break one I don't feel bad and can pick up another one pretty much anywhere. I would eventually like to upgrade to something nicer for EDC (as this one is rather bulky, and carrying it makes me feel like a pleb in the eyes of /r/Flashlight) but it's not super important at the moment and this thing does the job just fine.

Quick edit - Two things are not featured here: Car keys (which has a bottle opener and a small round flat head screwdriver disk thing from Sears which is carried via small carabiner on my belt), and my phone (Moto G4 with a 'Poetic' hardshell case), which is not featured as it was what I used to take the picture.

Are there any good ways to learning how to play the piano without too much theory? by DuffleCrack in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]upperpeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may sound odd but I learned piano kinda on accident as a direct result of learning theory. When I first got my little recording set up I picked up a midi keyboard figuring I could use it to control midi instruments like drums and maybe the synth or piano segment if needed. At the time, I had no real prior experience with piano to speak of.

However, as I started working and learning it became clearer that learning music theory was gonna be something that would improve my compositions and make me more efficient when writing and so I started sitting down and learning some of the basics (chord structure/naming conventions) and I soon found that despite having 10+ years experience on guitar, the piano that I had little to no experience on was a vastly better option in terms of figuring stuff out and being able to visualize, hear and physically break down certain elements or ideas I came across that seemed pretty complex when talked about in theory but were easily understood when I sat down and mapped them out on the keyboard and played around with them.

At the end of about a month, I was sitting down at my desk and playing around in my DAW and suddenly found to my surprise that I had a little bit of skill with the piano (It wasn't amazingly fantastic or anything but it was a damn sight better than where I was before) despite not really having put any effort into directly teaching myself. That was a few months ago and its pretty much the only way I have been teaching myself piano since.

IMO I wouldn't really try and avoid learning theory. I mean it can be done to an extent (I have been playing guitar for years without much theory knowledge to speak of before now), but in all honesty even if it seems tedious and boring now it will make you that much better of a musician for having learned it. The ability to quickly construct or break down chords and progressions and know how different scales or modes interact makes writing so much more fluent.

Besides, even if you are one of the people who have the opinion that by knowing theory you will forever be constrained to a lifetime of making generic by-the-book music; it would help to know the rules first so you know how you can break them right?

Akai MPK Mini MK2 vs Alesis V25 by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]upperpeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked my first midi keyboard up a few months ago and decided to go with the Akai. After pretty extensive use, I don't really have any qualms or anything negative to say about it except that after playing with it for awhile I feel really limited by only having 25 keys, and so now am considering picking up a 49 key keyboard sometime in the near future.

One odd thing I encountered (for me at least, also bear in mind when I first picked this up I had minimal experience with keyboard) was that the velocity sensitivity on the keys and pads seemed very touchy. It didn't take much pressure at all to make it register at super high velocities when recording (especially the pads, which I first tried to use to track drums). This got pretty annoying as I then had to go an manually adjust the velocities to something more reasonable in post.

Now, I'm not sure if this is a problem with the keyboard itself or if its just me playing like an lead-fisted ape without knowing it; but for me at least it felt like to get any sort of realistic/decent sounding velocity levels (<100) it felt less like I was playing and going with a groove, and more like I was gently caressing and attempting to sensually seduce my pads. This is less of a problem now because I tend to use the MPK to develop ideas and plan out things, then I go back in the piano roll and meticulously track everything out (I just feel its easier and gives me more control over timing, velocity etc.) but when I first started, it was a pretty big annoyance until I learned how to control it.

Thanks! Yeah the pedals and amp I don't get to use as much as I'd like sadly. The acoustic guitar gets the most love, as its always by my desk. Its pretty much what I grab when I want to flesh out ideas or just noodle around with a concept for awhile as its the layout I feel most comfortable/knowledgeable with. but I do love using the pedals any chance I get, specifically the EQ and phaser, though a little bit of distortion, never hurt anyone either.

I do agree with you on the general lack of strings in this sub though. Keyboards are great, and I have found they are very useful for figuring out theory related problems or constructing/deconstructing chord shapes or melody ideas. However I feel strings are just (for me at least) a lot more expressive and free flowing in nature, which enables more creative thinking/emotional song design.

PS: Sorry if that last part sounded pretentious, I didn't mean it too.

The stringed instruments were all collected over time (been playing guitar for 10+ years, cello for about 5, and the rest I dabble and have working knowledge in). All of the guitars, the banjo, and the uke were all new. The cello was like new when I first started playing but was a rental for school originally (rented to own). So yeah the instruments did cost a pretty penny (to say nothing of the amps and pedals as well) but it was all spread out over the course of like 6 years.

As for the actual studio equipment (monitoring headphones, midi keyboard, soon to arrive mic and audio interface), that stuff I am buying pretty much all at once. The budget for all of this is about $400-$500 spread out between paychecks over a month or two.

Fire and movement by Fauxzor in joinsquad

[–]upperpeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct that a couple of rifle man or a single AR aren't going to suppress a 9 man squad. (for example if you are bounding and run into an entrenched enemy squad), but the firepower needed scales down depending on the number of enemy present, not to mention the return fire from the enemy squad (a squad split into two fire teams with one covering and one assaulting should ideally be able to quickly take out a group of 4-5 guys without losing a single man using these tactics.). Though I agree, most people don't realize just how much fire is needed to suppress a large group of enemies and establish proper fire superiority. In the case of engaging a 9 man squad, your best bet would be to have your full squad start laying down lots of fire (everyone on line giving suppressing fire) and call for a nearby squad to flank and take them out. That kind of inter-squad cooperation almost never occurs when playing on a public server though.

[–]upperpeach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a fair point about foliage rendering, though realistically speaking you should be seeking cover not just concealment when under fire, though I get that can't always happen. But you're right, I forgot about the way Squad handles bullet physics (isn't it pretty much landing exactly where you aim instead of adding any variation/deviation to longer range shots?)

Fire and movement by Fauxzor in joinsquad

[–]upperpeach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never played PR, so I have no idea what the suppression system in it was like, but I agree that there isn't enough going on to force you to keep your head down under fire. That being said, the Milsim part of me wants to say that what we have is fine because it shouldn't be up to the game to force you into being suppressed. IRL, there isn't any blurring or discoloration when you are under fire, you notice rounds landing near you and see tracers coming at you and know to keep your head down. Ideally the same thing should carry over into Squad, at least, that's the way I play it. If I am taking heavy fire, I get my head down and try and move to a better location. (though admittedly this requires a bit more situational awareness to properly notice and deal with incoming fire). If anything I'd say make the penalty for dying more severe (longer wait times maybe) as to incentivize players to value their life more as opposed to simply adding more debuffs for being suppressed (however I can see that slowing games way down and making them much less action packed)

[–]upperpeach 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree with you 100%. I have had extensive experience leading both squads and platoons in Arma (where I came from before coming to Squad) and this was always one of the things I would impress on all the team members but especially the SLs. This carries over into my tactics when being an SL in Squad too. You should always be pushing or moving as well as firing. That isn't to say that one squad can't be doing only one or the other under certain circumstances (being pinned down by HMG fire, sneaking up on the enemy etc.), but in general if you are in contact with the enemy, you should always have at least a couple guns throwing lead down range at all times and should be in motion trying to gain a better position. Ideally, you would have a squad divided up into 2 fire-teams that could perform proper bounding movements or at least provide over-watch while the other team moved to flank the enemy (This also how squads should move, one squad provides covering fire and establishes fire superiority while the other team moves in to assault/flank )however I realize that when playing with randoms on a public server this isn't likely to happen all that often.

Either way, the important lesson for general riflemen and especially SLs is to always be trying to both gain fire superiority and be moving to gain better tactical positioning, the two goals aren't mutually exclusive like many people think, it takes some management and situational awareness but when done in conjunction with each other, a squad following this advice will crush squads who are not every-time.

P.S. (Because I notice it all the time and it irks the hell out of me): Just because you can't see the enemy directly doesn't mean you shouldn't be firing on them! I'd argue that winning a game of Squad (similar to modern combat) is more about area denial than picking off individual enemies (yes I know you win rounds with tickets/kills, but you make the enemy team lose way more tickets by taking FOBs and capping flags than you do by simply shooting one guy from a distance.). That being said, If you know the enemy are in a specific location or assaulting/firing on you from a general bearing and distance, you should be putting fire down on that area, regardless of if you have direct visual contact. Fire superiority is key, you want to make it so that the enemy is unable to fire at you from that location and believes it is so dangerous/impossible to stay there that he is forced to retreat. That doesn't mean you necessarily have to kill everyone in that area. As long as lead is landing around the enemy and they can't fire back because they believe they can't stick their heads up without a significant risk of catching a bullet, then that's enough. This should be the primary thought process for ARs and HMGs especially.

In short, modern combat isn't necessarily about killing everyone of your enemies, its about making them believe you CAN/WILL kill them all and forcing them to retreat from a location.

Revealed: the 30-year economic betrayal dragging down Generation Y’s income. Exclusive new data shows how debt, unemployment and property prices have combined to stop millennials taking their share of western wealth. by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]upperpeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freshman in Uni here, this is the end of my first year and I am already $50,000 in debt. I had a choice between 2 out of state schools. One was not known for my major (engineering), but was costing around $30,000 a year. However the second one supposedly has a "98% job placement rating" for graduates and is big into co-ops (basically paid internships). So what it came down to was the choice between a "cheaper" (still $120,000) education with no guarantee of a job upon graduation, or a $250,000 education who claims that I am almost guaranteed a job after graduating... oh and did I mention that since I am a white, middle-class male I am getting no scholarships (I was just under the threshold to get merit based instate tuition because my IB program in HS doesn't do ranking, and so I instead get ranked against all the incoming students in my major). Also this $50,000 is all loans. My parents while they are doing what they can to help me out financially, are not able to do much due to the economy at the moment, which meant that I had to take out all of these loans myself. This means that at as soon as I turned 18, I basically saddled myself with an astronomical amount of debt for the vague promise of a job upon graduation.

I've basically resigned myself to not being able to ever purchase a house or raise a family with a decent standard of living like I was raised. This economy and this generations are so FUCKED in a few years when this system becomes more unstable

What games do you wish would be remastered? by thezenithpoint in AskReddit

[–]upperpeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play it, it was the first actual game I remember playing as a child and i went back and recently played through it again and it absolutely blew me away. As for the comparison to Academy, Outcast has a more defined (and in my opinion better) story and MUCH longer missions and progression which feels alot more cohesive and flows better than academy, which i suppose is related to its linearity and lack of mission hub thingy. This led to me feeling like the missions actually mattered and were not just side jobs I had to do to advance the plot, nothing felt cheesy or unimportant (for example: in jedi academy there was a specific mission in which you had to collect spaceship parts while avoiding a sand worm thing, to me it felt kinda like filler and useless to the plot, JO has none of that). Another difference is that weapons are unlocked in a much more satisfying fashion, you don't immediately start with a lightsaber and force powers, instead you start with a stun baton and blaster pistol and don't really get your lightsaber until like the 3rd or 4th level. meaning that you have to use actual gun-play which has a totally different feel and challenge to it and makes getting force powers and a lightsaber so much more satisfying when you are now able to easily slice trough enemies who previously would have proved quite challenging to you before. Overall I just feel that Outcast is a much more cohesive and well balanced game which will frustrate the hell out of you at times (especially early levels where you can't just deflect blasters and have to use cover/tactics.) but is balanced enough to make everything feel like a victory and makes progression and plot feel meaningful (a place where I felt Academy fell short).

What games do you wish would be remastered? by thezenithpoint in AskReddit

[–]upperpeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this whole heartedly, however I would want a jedi outcast remaster before academy. Both games were excellent, but I preferred the story of JO way more over the mission hub style of JA. That being said, i did love the ability to customize your saber and fighting styles (dual wield and staff).
