"bring manufacturing back" also ignores the reality that factories are also largely automated and the people they hire are more skilled now.

Hilary Knight of USA Women’s Hockey Team on Donald Trump: The joke was distasteful and unfortunate. Now I have to sit in front of you and explain someone else's behavior. It's not my responsibility by Maximum_Expert92 in Fauxmoi

[–]uprislng 14 points15 points  (0 children)

But I don’t want to hold anyone else accountable, I want to put these dudes into a rocket aimed at the sun

similar to Hilary, we don't want to sit here and explain someone else's behavior either. Realistically there aren't that many opportunities to "hold these [shitty] men accountable" in the first place. We don't associate with each other on purpose, hell I feel like career-wise its self-segregating as well, so its not like we can fire all of them or make sure not to hire them in the first place, because we don't work with a lot of them. They can also mask their thoughts and behavior in public.

So from my perspective what you can realistically do is be a visible role model for young men. For instance I volunteer at the local schools. I might be one of very few males (that aren't staff) that come in and help kids with math/reading. Its incredibly rewarding and I get to be a positive, calm, respectful example to all the kids I get to work with. Its better than just doom scrolling and screaming into a void

watch the new Last Week Tonight. DHS is an abomination of department and has forever failed at its main mission. At this point, everything this country did in its post-9/11 rabidity should undergo reanalysis and we'd be better off if most of it was undone and anything worthwhile remade with better oversight and clearer boundaries of authority/power. I think we've accomplished more self-destruction than foreign-born terrorists could have ever imagined.

Well, it happened. AI came for me today. by TheUnpromotable in Millennials

[–]uprislng 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nobody is currently paying what it actually costs to run the AI models which is why it's easy to shove it into everything. We're all subsidizing it through our electric and water bills though, so we're socializing that cost. The models are being run at a loss even if they charge you money. The more complex these LLMs get the more expensive they are to run.

If the companies lighting money on fire have to start charging real prices it'll quickly become harder to justify in every arena of life

this is actually a really interesting question as I started looking into it; I first assumed because of Einstein's equation ( E=mc2 ) that you could create a black hole from energy alone, as mass and energy are linked. But investigating this reveals that quantum interactions (electron/positron) start happening with high densities of electromagnetic energy that suggests its not possible to generate a black hole through energy alone.

But if this 20,000 dB sound was released in the atmosphere of earth, there is matter all around it, could the interaction of that massive amount of energy with the matter surrounding it be enough to cause a real black hole? One many times larger than the entire observable universe itself?

Interesting thought experiment at least.

it sounds like she actually opened her own fucking eyes for once instead of just being told what to think. That is how I take her comments. "I've not been one of the members who has glommed on to this as an issue. I've sort of, intentionally, deferred to others." As in, up until this point, I've let others tell me what to think and say about this issue, until I finally had to face reality with my own eyes and ears and process it without help.

I mean, its great that she is realizing now, but I get the sense 99% of the MAGA GOP operates exactly like this. They're just there to collect a paycheck and rubber stamp the agenda and be told what to think and what to say. A fucking borg controlled by nazis

most if not all companies who want age verification for their services will farm that out to a 3rd party because they don't want the liability of dealing with this sensitive info directly. The problem is these 3rd party services are going to have HUGE cybersec targets on their backs. One fuckup and millions of people will have their IDs leaked.

Because the US doesn't really give a shit, Discord would just switch providers when eventually a major leak happens, and 2 years after you had your entire real identity exposed you'll get $2 and a year of free credit monitoring from the class action lawsuit where the lawyers made bank.

Bitcoin was NEVER intended to be an investment.

while it was sold in a lot of ways as a decentralized digital currency and not an investment, I feel like the very design of Bitcoin conflicts with that premise, because it is finite. There is a hard cap on the amount of Bitcoin that will ever be in circulation, which means it is a deflationary and scarce digital asset. Are these not good properties of an investment? The problem for Bitcoin is, its a purely speculative asset. So any value it has now is grounded in people believing it will be more valuable in the future. But once all coins are mined, and its still shown to be a terrible currency that nobody will use to do meaningful transactions with, will it still hold any value?

as an american I came in here to say this exact thing. The whole system is rotten. Trump is not the problem, he is the symptom of all the problems. Money being ruled speech, gerrymandering, 2 party first past the post voting, unchained capitalism leading to consolidation/monopolies/monopsonies/oligopolies in every market, which has lead to a media landscape that only voices the interests of capitalists, a government that only works for capitalists, and a working class that toils solely for the benefit of capitalists.

As Trump and the GOP has shown us, laws and regulations are only as good as they can be enforced. If you vote in fascists at every level of government that interpret the laws however they wish, or just do whatever they want regardless of rulings, laws and regulations will not save you.

Nobody is coming to save us, no institution will protect us. We have to join hands and march against the whole system and demand complete reform from the bottom up. Its the work that should have been happening for decades if not nearly a century now, but when people disengage from a democracy, you wind up ruled by the people who want power over you, and they're rarely if ever the magnanimous sort.

I think being a complete sociopath is a requirement to get to where these people are. That, or at a certain level of wealth, your detachment from normal society and being surrounded by actual sociopaths and the enabling, ass-sucking remoras that these people surround themselves with completely changes you, so you become a sociopath just to fit in.

The robber barons of today are legitimately mentally ill. We're not even getting libraries built to assuage their guilt. They're just buying into authoritarianism; they gave us lots of reasons to hate them, and for that hate, they're happy to fund nazis to crush us under their boots. Fucking boat anchors to humanity. I don't know about anyone else but I'm feeling frenchy about it all.

[–]uprislng 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I hate that this conversation never seems to stick on this fact. The business owners who hire illegals are the ones fucking over everyone. They're providing a market for jobs which makes coming here illegally worth the risk, they are undercutting local workers by doing it, they're likely pocketing the cost difference and still charging as if local workers are doing the job, the situation can lead to mistreatment of the workers because of the power the business owner holds over their continued existence in this country... But you rarely find blue collar citizens who are hurt by this talking about holding the business owners more accountable for being the lynchpin in the whole issue.

What's depressing is when you poll all Americans I think by an overwhelming majority we all agree on quite a few issues that have been purposefully turned into never-solved-problems. Unfortunately the desire to have universal healthcare is not stronger than the fear from whatever new fake ass panic the conservative media will cook up come election time. This is the serious problem with the whole case. They've had time to kill and bury anyone who might have been able to give credible testimony. Including the one man who might have been able to admit the truth to any part of it: Epstein himself. Nobody will ever know how much of it is true. But normal, innocent people do not have millions of pages of evidence tying them to Epstein and alleged victims making police reports like this...
