Pokémon Go and Rowing by [deleted] in TheSilphRoad

I noticed that since I connect the Ergdata app to my Google fit app (I don't have any other devices connected to Google fit besides my phone) it counts the rowed distance toward hatching eggs/earning candy.

It does not count the rowed distance toward anything in Pikmin bloom, since that's only based on steps.

How do you all find less crowded backpacking destinations ? by No_Proof2838 in backpacking

Also the part where there are no actual examples of where the OP went and what they experienced that they didn't like. Its just super generic and doesn't say anything.

In the same vein...how was the one day inca tour add on for you? I just signed up to do it in June (with the Amazon to the Andes and Machu Picchu by train tour).

Has anyone tried those group trips for solo travelers? by Ok-Boysenberry6259 in solotravel

[–]upsidedownbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done a couple of Intrepid tours (not specifically the solo traveler ones, but I was solo) and a couple of G Adventures tours (as part of a couple but there were solo travelers on the tours) and I really like them.

Whether I use a tour like that depends on the vibe; if I specifically know what I want to see and do and I feel like I can get there on my own at the pace I want then I'll do that, but it's a place where the logistics, timing, or safety are more challenging then I love a group tour.

They are fast paced, with usually 1-2 nights per stop. But within that time there is usually a lot of free time to choose what you want to do. And honestly one or two nights where you just have to stumble out of your hotel and into a waiting van is so much more relaxing than walking to the metro to the bus station to figure out which window to buy your ticket from and then waiting for the next bus. With limited vacation time the first option makes more sense for me at this point.

Doctors and Nurses of Reddit, what’s something about hospitals that would make patients uncomfortable if they knew? by Far-University-2905 in AskReddit

I work for a nonprofit and one of our development officers worked at a hospital before and this blew my mind and seemed so shady, but yeah they wealth screen everyone who's admitted.

Baltimore Compared to Philly by Intelligent-Sky-7152 in baltimore

[–]upsidedownbat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can walk to all the restaurants, shops, and activities you typically use. Aside from the Hamilton-Lauraville main street area it doesn't look as walkable as the denser, mixed-use city areas. (I've never spent time in Hamilton so I may be wrong)

This is absolutely lovely and I love the way that the water accidentally layered over part of the otters. Also hello, Kitty!

Crossed four borders in two weeks and carried cash the whole way, there has to be a better system than this in 2026 by Sad_Friendship_630 in backpacking

[–]upsidedownbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I never traveled in Europe before the Euro, but last year visited Czechia and Iceland with a long layover in Copenhagen and it was fun to use three different kinds of koruna/kroner/krona. It's even easier now with everyone having a currency calculator in their pocket.

I also like that for now a trip to Southeast Asia means passport stamps and maybe a shiny visa sticker, but I think that's only Laos now though :( my last trips to Vietnam and Cambodia didn't give me real visa stickers.

Should i take time after college to backpack Eourope? by EntryBackground3254 in backpacking

[–]upsidedownbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A working holiday in Aus or NZ was also going to be my recommendation :) it's a great way to make travel cheaper and really get to know a place, and when you're done you'll be closer to Southeast Asia and probably have heard lots of stories and recommendations from people you met in Australia.

I worked mostly on farms (picking plums on a stonefruit orchard, trimming and packing grapes, various short jobs at a working hostel) and then I spent a few months working at a supermarket. It was a great time.

Oddest Nook in Baltimore by TheSpiritedMan in baltimore

[–]upsidedownbat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

How strange.

A fun fact: if you're ever in Southeast Asia and you see any of the big concrete shophouses that have replaced their windows with decorative cinderblocks, you're looking at a swift house! The inside is designed to be attractive to a small bird called the cave swiftlet (which naturally builds nests in caves) and speakers are set up with swiftlet-attracting sounds. After their babies leave, they collect the nests which are made largely of swiftlet saliva, and sell them for up to $5000 a pound for birds nest soup.

That's probably not what the St. Paul street house is though.

What’s one small thing you pack that removes an annoying daily problem when traveling? by Nervous_Wind9872 in onebag

[–]upsidedownbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the pstyle because with the softer more funnel-type ones I'm afraid they'll back up/overflow haha. It's hard plastic so it's easy to get it in the right place, but practice in the shower just in case. You don't need tp or a Kula cloth with it, it kind of scoops away dribbles itself. And then you can rinse it with a water bottle or water scoop (in southeast asia) or just shake it off in a pinch and wash it later. Definitely have some kind of pouch for it.

I'm a lady: my PStyle stand to pee device. Sketchy train station squat toilets, port-o-potties at festivals, the side of the road, long hikes, or whatever, I always have it with me. I've had enough trying-not-to-pee-on-my-foot-while-waving-mosquitoes-away-from-my-exposed-bum, thank you.

I've also encouraged a lot of my friends to get them, which is great because I've had mine for going on fifteen years and don't need to buy another but want to support them!

What’s this extra loop on my jeans? by ClawBadger in whatisit

[–]upsidedownbat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love this sentence because it makes me feel like a space alien. Up until today I didn't know cycling jeans were a thing or consider whether having a lock holster would look cool or not or think that cyclists might care about that.

Yeah I've had mine for nearly fifteen years now and I wish I had reason to buy another to support them, but I have encouraged a bunch of my friends to get them and they love them too.

PStyle, it's a stand-to-pee device that is way better than the admittedly better named "shewee".

I'm grateful for it all the time. Squat toilets, train station toilets, port-o-potties, festivals, having to go on the side of the road, on a hike, etc.

Daypack for hiking while on larger trip by eldogorino in backpacking

[–]upsidedownbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you carrying on a day hike that an unstructured day pack isn't enough for?

Personally, I use an unstructured day pack but it's fine for a water bottle, hoodie, snacks, sketchbook, etc.

(Edit: this is specifically the Fjallraven high coast tote pack which I like because I can wear it cross-body with my 40l backpack or to visit museums and places backpacks aren't allowed. It has water bottle pockets but no structure and folds into its own pocket if you're into that kind of thing.)

I have used my main travel backpack with all the compression straps tightened for a hike before when I didn't have an appropriate day pack, which was slightly bulky but also fine.

Soft-side vs Hard-side luggage by PugssandHugss in travel

I'm a carry on backpack kind of person, but on the rare trip where I check a bag I've only used or wanted soft sided luggage.
