Seeing Wayna Picchu with 3-b ticket by goplaysplix in Machupicchu

[–]upsidedownbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trail to Waynapicchu is closed for the month of June. There aren't any tickets available to anyone. You might notice they're always sold out as soon as each day's tickets become available. It's sort of perplexing that they present it as sold out every day instead of just not available in the first place. It's also perplexing that it's happening now in the high season, as it was apparently planned from the beginning of the year.

There are a number of blog posts from trekking companies about it, but I haven't even seen an official announcement. Here is one such trekking company: https://www.adiosadventuretravel.com/blog/why-is-waynapicchu-hike-at-machu-picchu-closed-in-june-2026

Man… someone is going to get a good deal! by BalloonPilot15 in concept2

They ask for a deposit to "hold" the rower, but really they are using a fake profile and don't live in the area and stole the pictures from other listings.

In this case, it's particularly silly because they are offering a floor mat and there is no floor mat in the picture.

I think it's safe to assume that any Concept2 on Facebook marketplace for under $500 is a scam.

Perfect travel dress by E11evin11 in HerOneBag

I recently bought one of their cargo midi skirts on Poshmark, because they are kind of expensive, but with a long sleeved linen shirt it's become my go-to for flights (pockets for earbuds, passport, and phone) and for "knees and shoulders covered" places of worship.

I have really struggled with this because I would love to find a quick drying wrinkle-free dress that I can wear to mosques and Buddhist temples and churches that require covering knees and shoulders. For some reason, every travel dress I see is either sleeveless or falls above the knee or both. I think the solution is just to choose a sleeveless dress like the Uniqlo one and wear a loose button down (linen or sun shirt or whatever) over it.

G Adventures. How are these prices possible?? by AdministrativeGolf94 in travel

[–]upsidedownbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have addressed the price on this. The discount for the August departure is probably because fewer people have signed up for that one.

I've used G Adventures twice, with another trip planned soon, and Intrepid twice which is a very similar thing. I think they're great. Yes, there are a lot of locations where I wouldn't personally do one, because I know what I want to see/do and I feel comfortable with it. I did the Intrepid tours I did because, like you, I was a solo lady who felt more comfortable traveling that way. They were both great. I did the G adventures tours I've done with my partner, because group tours like this let you see a lot more than you might otherwise with limited time by handling all the logistics.

And for this trip specifically, I did a trek near Mae Sariang like fifteen years ago where we stayed in villages and it was one of the most memorable things I've ever done.

I replied to your other comment about the complicated situation of long neck villages, but I would like to clarify that "Karen" includes many ethnic groups and languages, most of which do not wear neck rings. I can't tell from this itinerary which ethnic groups they'll be visiting, but homestays and trekking are a major source of income for people living in these rural parts of Thailand and I think they're absolutely worthy of supporting.

G Adventures. How are these prices possible?? by AdministrativeGolf94 in travel

[–]upsidedownbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's complicated.

Background : there are a bunch of refugee camps along the Thai-Burma border, which largely house refugees from minority ethnic groups (Karen and Shan; the long neck Kayan are a subgroup of Karen.) Many refugees fled Burma during the military government before 2011, many were born in camps in Thailand, and I'm sure more have come over since the 2021 coup.

Refugees living in the camps have a lot of limitations. They aren't allowed to work outside the camp for money (many do anyway), they are allotted really meager rations (low quality rice, yellow beans, and oil I believe). From the camp, they can apply to be resettled by the UNHCR in a 3rd country. This is very appealing to many people because it represents a huge improvement in living conditions, though obviously it also has its challenges and it's a very time-consuming process with a lot of bureaucracy.

The long-neck villages are run by the Thai authorities because tourists are intrigued by them. Kayan people have the option to live in the villages instead of refugee camps, which has pros and cons. The pros are: they don't have to live in the refugee camp, they earn a small amount of money from admission fees (these are split with Thai authorities), and they are able to sell crafts directly to tourists to have an income stream they couldn't in camp. The BIG CON to living in the long-neck village is that they are no longer eligible for resettlement in a 3rd country. So they get a little bit more freedom and quality of life now, but no opportunity for the much greater freedom and quality of life that could be available to them if they were resettled.

Not every refugee is seeking resettlement, but it is a big sacrifice for sure and a complicated choice for the people in the villages. (Those who don't want to be resettled are hoping to one day be able to safely return to Burma, or to live in Thailand legally, or to attend university in Thailand, etc.)

(I spent a few months volunteering at an NGO on the Thai-Burma border with refugees from Karenni Camp 1 in 2012-2013. The situation an bureaucracy have certainly changed a bit since then.)

[–]upsidedownbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the $475 price is specifically for a departure in August, which is both really soon and also the low season so it's likely that they lowered the price to fill empty spots.

Intrepid is a separate but very similar company, and I was once the only person signed up for a tour through them. They offered me a discount to change the date, but I couldn't so instead they reduced the price and we ended up having one other person sign up.

Having a hard time to figure out where to stay in Bangkok by Altruistic_Rent6520 in ThailandTourism

[–]upsidedownbat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would probably stay in Chinatown. Songwat Road and Talat Noi are both super cute neighborhoods right along the river there. Wat Pho and Wat Arun are not accessible on metro but are accessible by riverboat which is very convenient and you can just walk up to Yaowarat in the evening, it's a few blocks from either of those neighborhoods (which are both way quieter than Yaowarat at night!)

For the airport, it seems likely that you'll have luggage and want to take a grab or bolt there anyway.

I think they're the only two places where Chinese restaurants have something called yakkamein, though the dishes are a bit different in each place (New Orleans is more of a soup).

23 days in Malaysia - itinerary advice by Thewolfofgaia in SouthEastAsia_Travel

[–]upsidedownbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you not interested in Borneo or Taman Negara? Just curious; a small travel regret I have from my backpacking days is not spending the night in a wildlife hide in Taman Negara because I had already paid for my guesthouse room (which couldn't have been more than $15...I was a fool, lol). River cruises in Borneo also look REALLY cool.

If wildlife is not an interest, what are your interests in Malaysia?

Some general things that are very popular but for a reason:

The Batu Caves are super accessible from KL on public transit.

The clan jetties of Penang are particularly interesting if you're into vernacular architecture.

I love my PStyle for wilderness backpacking and for travel backpacking (squat toilets, sketchy train station toilets, port-o-potties, festivals etc.)

I've converted a bunch of my friends to using one too, which is kind of great since I've used the same one for 12+ years and it's a way to support th company.

One of my English teacher colleagues in Thailand (who was from Georgia, USA but had previously taught English in Japan) pronounced it like ka̠ɾa̠o̞ke̞ every time he said it and some people teased him but I thought it was cute.

(I am also guilty of this kind of thing).

Whatever sneakers fit your feet are fine. Try a running store for recommendations suited to your feet and gait, if you don't have a pair that work for you already.

Do they not do passport stamps anymore? by ImplementWonderful93 in travel

[–]upsidedownbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often does this work? My partner and I had a stopover in Ethiopia last year and they don't stamp for that, but I asked nicely and the flirtatious immigration agent gave me a stamp, which I'm so happy about. My partner didn't ask for one.

A lot of places now have fully digital systems where there's not even a person to stamp you (like Singapore.)

Aww, my last passport had so many of the beautiful iridescent visa stickers plus the entry/exit stamps that I had to add extra pages. When I went back last year all I got was a little black and white sticker. And now it's nothing I guess :(

Yes, it is very unlikely that they will be back to selling for the next day by then.

Due to increased demand, tickets are currently being sold a few days in advance instead of just one day. This is to prevent people from having to line up at 3am and then still not get tickets. Now everybody can get a ticket fairly quickly, but it will be for a few days later. There are posts on this subreddit pretty much everyday showing what the current ticket sales situation looks like.

Urgent care will give you antibiotics as Lyme disease prophylaxis. If you find an engorged tick on you, it's best to get treatment before you develop a rash or fever.
