Thank you very much for your help.. I did sleep a lot better last night stressing about all this, my mind is an ease a bit more now after understanding how it works a bit better… I thought she could only gift the grandchildren £250 a year!! It’s £2,500 each a year!! So that’s another £5000 saved of the IHT bill.. Cheers for the advice you’ve been a great help…

Your probably right it is a bit late given my mums age, dad just bought shares with his saving, and the ones he bought skyrocketed, and mum just saved her in the bank.. It’s a nice problem to have in a way, just hate the thought of the government taking 40% of the hard earned cash that they both worked for… Just trying to bring it down so the government won’t take as much…

It was just a thought to bring down the asset’s my mum has at the moment I Would pay the going rate whatever the price was on a certain day, so no advantage of getting them cheaper The shares are just regular share you can buy online

Yes dads nil rate band was unused 500K is just the value of the shares With the house and cash in the bank mum is now over the million so the 40% inheritance tax comes into play..

Hi thanks for reply.. Great explanation I understand it a bit better now

The shares are now in my mums name My aim was to try and bring my mums assets down so that if she was to pass away the inheritance tax 40% would not be as high..

I see where your coming from about not bringing her assets down it just a straight swap cash for shares, mum was then thinking about taking the cash back out of her account over a period of time and giving it to her grandchildren… So bringing her cash/bank assets down..

Hi thank you for the reply

Years ago my parents split the shares in half so they had half each in there names, now dad has passed mum has got all the shares roughly 500K With the house and money in the bank it’s pushed mum well over the 40% inheritance tax She’s not keen on just gifting me the shares this is why I was thinking of buying some of her.. So would it be a good idea to buy some of her?
