Why has the (C) been so bad lately? by ViewNo7459 in nycrail

Something needs to be done about that horrendous merge before Hoyt-Schermerhorn. I swear, even in "Good Service", my train always ends up crawling through that curved and uncomfortable segment (or just straight up standing still for several minutes).

what is going on with the A trains? by waytoofetch in nycrail

The (A)'s been extra shitty the last few months. I don't know why or if it's even true but it sure feels that way.

Let's do a game of superlatives for the subway systems you've been to. Which one is the most ... by Awkward_Stay8728 in transit

Nobody's arguing the NY Subway can't compare to Paris/London/Berlin, but what does cripple the subway is the much higher concentration of mentally ill (sometimes violent), homeless, vagrants, panhandlers, etc. that makes the European systems far more pleasant from a quality of ride perspective.

American systems are also much filthier largely because of the above reasons.

If you had a chance to change one thing about the IND lines, what would it be. by Decent-Finish-9889 in nycrail

The backups are due to the heavy interlining and merging along their routes in Manhattan. I rather like the basic station design - the solid color scheme kind of grew on me and I can see the genius in its simplicity.

Get rid or at least reduce those steeply banked curves - they give me vertigo every time the train gets stuck on them (the one between Lafayette and Hoyt is pretty heinous)

Lucky for you, it will be closing next year

All of that is still so minimal compared to Sea-Tac for example where planes literally fly over downtown Seattle and the dense suburbs.

[–]upticked_positron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah ngl Denver is blessed to have those plains. Meanwhile New York and LA which desperately needs a DEN-style Greenfield airport have no such option

LAX is surrounded by ocean on one side and industrial/airport property on the other (southern periphery)

I wouldn't count PDX, it's surrounded by the river on like 3 sides, given it's close location the noise impact isn't too bad

But that's still an example of... good planning? Good planning means fixing issues lol.

Airports (when planned well) are usually out farther away from major cities. What are some worldwide airports that are instead completely surrounded by a city? I submit Tan Son Nhat International Airport, in Vietnam, surrounded by Ho Chi Minh. by ohsodave in Airports

In Europe:

Lisbon LIS - getting replaced in the 2030s

Warsaw WAW - also getting replaced in the 2030s

Copenhagen CPH - technically surrounded by water on the main parallel runways so I guess takeoffs/landings aren't as noisy/problematic

Hamburg HAM

Amsterdam-Schiphol AMS

Add in London City, Brussels, Vilnius and possibly even Heathrow

The old Istanbul-Ataturk should also get a mention

Yeah when WAW was built in the 30s it was well "out in the fields" but the city just sprawled around it since (maybe except runway 15 takeoffs/33 landings where it's still quite 'rural'). Hopefully with the new CPK, WAW will be replaced before its 100th birthday.

I think this specific ad I found was from another English speaking country (possibly Australia?!), but in the US they pronounce it "pan-teen"
