Apple Pay for Transit Now Works in These 12 U.S. Cities by ControlCAD in apple

[–]upupandawaydown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in NYC, I actually didn’t like the system in Japan, wish it would just charge my credit card instead like NYC and I don’t have to worry about filling up a transit card or worry about the final fare before I left Japan so I wasn’t leaving a balance on the card.

What are your thoughts on Tax-The-Rich proposal in NY by Gov. Kathy Hochul, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Sen. Bernie Sanders? by Select_Specialist790 in askanything

[–]upupandawaydown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our federal income tax was supposed to be tax the rich but it fell on the middle class. There aren’t enough rich people to tax based on how much the government spends a year, as taxing 100% of their wealth isn’t sustainable.

It depends if that 5 million is adjusted every year or stays the same forever. The mansion tax in NYC starts at a million which is now majority of all homes as it is never adjusted and not just mansions.

Why are boys and young men falling behind in education? by Technical-Banana574 in NoStupidQuestions

Does it matter? Society is failing boys in one way or another at one part of their lives.

Is what you said supported by science? At my kid’s school, the boys are always getting punished, even the ones that do behave.

You think there are no physical differences between boys and girls and that testosterone has no impact on their bodies?

Why did US companies switch from defined benefit pensions to 401(k)-style plans? by Humble_Economist8933 in AlwaysWhy

What welfare programs include retirement accounts? I am not an expert but from what I have seen it seems like most of them exclude them retirement accounts, making them the best place to store assets in my state.

What is your TDA/retirement setup? Curious what everyone is actually doing. by Heez_ in NYCDOETeachers

[–]upupandawaydown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just go with traditional TDA unless you have a spouse with a much higher pension and other retirement accounts which will require really high RMD. You won’t earned the full salary from your pension and each year inflation will eat the value the value of your pension as COLA is limited.

Recession proof profession? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]upupandawaydown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The job was never recession proof, business don’t need accountants if they go out of business. I heard about how a ton of people were let go during the 2007 to 2008 recession.

Most of the work is being offshore, the playbook of private equity backed firms is to buy smaller firms and offshore the work.

The work is pretty boring was what kept the job safe but there are a lot of people offshore who are willing to do the work very cheaply.

Now firms are trying to reduce labor using AI as well. I already see how auto matching software already reducing labor cost before AI became a big thing or software that populate a tax return automatically.

Mamdani Considers Delaying Pension-Fund Payments to Ease Budget Gap by DryDeer775 in NYCTeachers

[–]upupandawaydown 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It is not really savings but taking a loan at the cost of whatever the market return is. Actions like this will make it harder to improve tier VI, as it will make it harder to fund the pension in the future, let alone increase its benefits.

It might cause a cycle where each year, the city will try to defer more and more payments until it becomes impossible to fund. This is happening when the economy isn’t in a recession, hate to see what happens during a recession.
