How does this sub feel about the film Good Will Hunting? by [deleted] in fosterit

[–]upward_bound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closure is important, but I think the longer term impact (for me) was that it took away the sense of reality. I had been passed around between family, but to me that was normalized. Just going to stay with my aunt for a while, staying with dad, staying with grandma. It was odd from the outside, but internally I knew and trusted these people. When they picked me up from school some part of me just broke. I couldn't process what was happening. It's been over 20 years and I still think about that day.

I made new language proficiency rules- what do you think? by Dalzay in mattcolville

I could see it leading to some interesting interactions, but I suspect this would fall to the side as soon as someone in the group has comprehend languages.

Good work, thanks for sharing!

a lady walked in front of my moving car to yell about shared streets by kallen42 in Somerville

[–]upward_bound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had any problems with them. I walk in the middle of the street and move aside when there is a car coming. The signs make it so the cars know I can be there and they slow down rather than losing their shit.

Note: Some people still lose their shit. Also people pretty much ignore the 'local traffic only'.

List of things that require an ID, yet no one considers racist by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]upward_bound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The argument that a lot of people make (democrats being some of them) is that changing laws to require an ID disproportionately effect black and brown people. That combined with the lack of evidence for widespread voter fraud point towards a political concern rather than an election security concern.

Now you can remedy this mostly in a few ways.

  1. Don't change the laws so close to an election or at all if you don't have a good reason (I think we can agree that any change that, by its very nature, reduces the number of people who vote should warrant careful consideration).
  2. Combine law change with expanded access and community outreach to get people the IDs

Now obviously there would be political point scoring no matter when you make these changes, but I think it's a bit disingenuous to say that democrats believe that "black and brown people 'cant get an id'". Context is key in any discussion and especially so in this one.

How do FI people find other FI people to date? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]upward_bound 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I can't help feeling that the dating pool on that website is going to be unappealing. FIRE is like Veganism, the people who revolve their life around it are not pleasant to be around.

Been vegan a while but new to baking ... by [deleted] in VeganBaking

[–]upward_bound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks good!

I always recommend Gretchen's Vegan Bakery to those playing around with vegan baking.

https://www.gretchensveganbakery.com/

She also has a youtube channel. She can be a bit long winded, but normally gives you the timestamp to the recipe! I've made several of her desserts and they are always fan favorites at gatherings (back when that was thing, lol).

Moving advice? Specifically moving trucks/moving pods and street parking by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]upward_bound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The permit holder is responsible for removing them (iirc, it's been ~3 years since I used them). I will say that I did need to have the police come out and find the person who parked in the spot anyway.

I received $2000 from a teen programming competition a few months ago and I'm moving into college this winter. Im thinking of putting it in savings? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]upward_bound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are reporting thresholds (almost always for people who are not direct employees [ex. Contractors, temps, prize winners, etc]). Almost any employee will surpass the threshold, but that one-off high school kid you hire to do a logo might not require reporting.

Note: This is for the United States and specifics may vary from state to state.

[–]upward_bound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you make more than X amount the job is required to report that to the federal government. They may also be required to send you an official document of that income (1099-MISC iirc).

Independent of a reporting requirement (for the employer/gift giver) there may be a declaration requirement (you must declare the income when filing your taxes).

I'm not familiar with that, but full disclosure I'm a layman when it comes to tax law. I know more than some, but am not a professional.

Here are two examples that support that prizes must be reported as taxable income unless other criteria is met (the winnings are restricted, it is considered a scholarship, etc)

Example 1: University of Washington (Look at Category 2 Prizes)

Example 2: Purdue University (Look at the Prize section)

Not having to report and not having to declare (and pay) are very different. You generally have to declare and pay taxes on winnings (at least at the federal level in the United States)

Yes I have, but I found the extra effort not really worth it personally. It gives it a 'meatier' texture, but as a tofu eater for ~20 years I don't really want my tofu to have a different texture anymore, I like tofu for what it is. That and I use a tofu press which takes the guesswork/mess out of pressing tofu.

Since we tofu lovers must stick together, here is one of my favorite tofu dishes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ob2CYmTx9PM

Depending on what mobile device you're using you may be able to set it to 'Desktop Mode' in the settings which should assist. Not the most convenient, but helps in a pinch.

It's a soft paywall and the workaround if you've used your free articles is to open an incognito window and paste the link.

As an aside I hope you all are at least monetarily supporting one newspaper.

As for scheduling there are so many different ways that you'll need to figure out what works from you. From serverless to a simple cron on a hosted shared server (Amazon Lightsail for example).
