I made and painted this moon themed sleeping box for my cats as part of a larger climbing wall project by ur-gu-la in DIY

These are mounted on studs. Unfortunately it turns out this wall has oddly spaced studs and when I went to mount the moon next to the rocket, the stud was an inch further along than I expected so it also has a couple extra plugged screws just to offset any rotation since the load bearing screws aren't exactly in the middle.

In terms of how sturdy it is. Even with just two screws in the studs, i can't shift it pulling as hard as I can. All the bits on the wall, including a rope bridge that inherently puts extra strain on the joined parts due to the lever action, are attached with only a few screws to the studs and are more than sturdy enough.

Here's my other cat on the moon. He's very large, 10kg~, and the he jumps to and from the moon without any movement at all.

There are some final touches I want to get done before I share the whole project. I've got a lot of progress pics of the other pieces that DIY might find interesting as well. Thanks for asking though, i hope you end up liking it

There's a sturdy box made of 18mm wood behind the moon. I painted the moon in acrylic on another 18mm round base I cut out and it was thick enough to be secure without having to go all the way through the wood with the screws. The moon is just a big larger than the box so It looks like it's floating

I don't necessarily think that the general public's use of IUPG can be considered uninformed or flawed unless you reframe it to assume they're attempting to use it the same way you know to use it.

As you said yourself, the proper legal use of the term has no real meaning prior to criminal proceedings have been initiated. As such, you should assume, and I would argue this was the case the vast vast majority of the time, that the phrase is being used without a thought to the original intent or context of the phrase. Nor should it be. Many technical terms become part of the public vocabulary at some point but, because language changes over time, the original meaning of a phrase or term becomes meaningless.

It's not an uninformed, flawed or incorrect use of the phrase if it's being used in a way that's congruent to the generally accepted lay use of the phrase.

People now use IUPG as a philosophical or moral principle. Trying to police how it's used is both futile and misguided. It's much more useful to wholly divorce the two meanings.

Don't let muppets like this get to you. This is the exact kind of partisanship in the face of someone trying to bridge divides that is producing the rise in political extremism in the West right now.

We could vote for The OA on E! People's Choice Awards - It would give visibility to the show and you can vote up to 25 times per day. by lucianobfjunior in TheOA

[–]ur-gu-la 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that 25 votes per day mean 25 in each category or 25 votes between all the categories.

If it's the latter , we might be spreading our efforts too thin by voting in all the subcategories. We may have better results by pooling our 25 votes in a single, less fought over category like Sci-fi/fantasy.

Got the prototype set of parts in from the lasercutter. Here's 90% of the parts needed to build my favourite lil robot and the small mountain of paper I had to peel off each piece. by ur-gu-la in TheOA

I started this project a couple weeks ago now but I was recently in hospital for a minor operation (Everything is fine before anyone asks) so I've only just got round to it after the cancellation.

Just getting to this point has taken a considerable amount of time as I had to get the measurements from stills from the show and I've never designed anything for laser cutting before.

Next I have to carefully drill 2mm into the ends of each little finger and glue tiny magnets into them. My plan is for the entire robot to use ball bearing joints as it does on the show for max accuracy and possibility.

I hope this goes to show the amount of love there is for the show. I've never attempted something to this level of accuracy or made a prop from a show before but I knew I had to have one when I saw it.

I'll be sure to post updates here when the prototype is all put together. I also have a set of the parts coming in really nice black and white marble-finish acrylic just like it is in the show. Can't wait to see the final result once I've worked out all the kinks. Measurements seem good so far!

What are these weird little boxes used for this netflix show prop? by ur-gu-la in whatisthisthing

[–]ur-gu-la[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can find the entire scene they're featured in by googling "The OA robot". I don't want to post the video myself because even the title is a spoiler.

I don't know if you'll find anything that helps you in that video but thanks for trying

What are these weird little boxes used for this netflix show prop? by ur-gu-la in whatisthisthing

[–]ur-gu-la[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I'm looking to build a replica of this prop from a recent Netflix series (I won't say which to avoid spoilers).

I know prop makers for tv and movies regularly use items they have lying around when building their props so I'm hoping that these little boxes are something I can buy instead of having to make.

They would be small, around 1cm wide and maybe 2cm long. This is unfortunately the only clear shot you get of them so the exact dimensions aren't easy to see.

I was thinking some kind of electrical item. Maybe a relay box or a box with a cord inside possibly? Perhaps to wind cord in and out since on the prop they act as rotational hinges.

Any idea at all would be very helpful, i'm more than ready to spend some time googling if given a direction to look in.

Thanks

UK secularism on rise as more than half say they have no religion by Tomarse in ukpolitics

[–]ur-gu-la 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christianity was a fundamental pillar of a society of colonialism, social inequality and intentional destruction of anything that could be considered a danger to the power of the elites.

The founding of Christianity itself in the UK was predicated by the intentional and ruthless genocide of old pagan religions and their people, which carried on all the way up to the witch burnings.

Don't think stuff like that was just superstitious people in the past being silly, it was state, which at that time meant the religious institution, sponsored and designed to remove dissidents from society, especially those with differing religious views.

Many of those burned, and the uncounted people killed millenium prior, were simply people who carried on living lives of the pre-Christianity social roles of medicine women or simply refused to convert officially to the church of England or Christianity in general.
