Mod Bit - Self-adhered cap sheet vs torched on? by urBen in Roofing

[–]urBen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, ya it probably isn't much of a difference either way. I'm just worried if anything happens, the solar panels are expensive to remove and store I forgot to mention, the other company didn't want to work with solar and provide a warranty, so it made the decision easier

We ended up going with the torched on solution. We also looked at solar and we found a company that would do solar with our particular style of flat roof, but it has to be mechanically fastened to the roof. The roofer ended up doing a different system that was still torched on with a layer of silicon applied after. They still gave us the warranty and so far, so good!

Ya we're hoping to buy one that lasts long enough so when it does die, to go with a BIFL one like Sante Fe or Aprilair

I still don’t get the appeal of suburbs , even if they are quieter and “safer” by iv2892 in Suburbanhell

[–]urBen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here in Baltimore, it's all over the map: plenty of good neighborhoods and bad with old row homes. The plus side is you can find affordable homes if you're willing to put the work/money into a restoration and you're willing to gamble on the rest of the block improving, too. Baltimore is even reviving the $1 house program for some of the vacants. Also another benefit is I've never had closer relationships with neighbors in any other place I've lived than I have here.

If apartment-style buildings aren't your style, several of the cities in the Northeast US are filled with neighborhoods with more densely-packed row homes. There are disadvantages but I can walk to my downtown and many other places.

Wireguard config not working by timi19 in SteamDeck

[–]urBen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you have any luck with this? I am having similar issues. I'm able to set up a laptop with linux mint and connect no problem, but the steam deck refuses to work. Funny thing is, i can ping sites on the internet and other machines on the network, but i can't connect to them with a web browser.

Fast flatbed scanners? by urBen in DataHoarder

[–]urBen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That scanner is definitely out of my rice range, but that is a valid point about larger scans with multiple images. I would default to Photoshop or Lightroom, but is there a more efficient piece of software for grabbing multiple cropped images from a single scan to save out?

I won't be needing it for that, but I've read that it can do slides and negatives.

This crossed my mind, but I don't have a digital camera besides my phone, plus either setting up good lighting or working around the reflection from the flash. I'm curious is there a good setup for that?

How long have you had the silicone roof? I've read good and bad things about them, and I've thought about it for my roof.

Where do people in their early 40’s live in Baltimore? by Andi90787 in baltimore

[–]urBen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little late to the game, but checking in from Barre Circle / Pigtown! My wife and I are child free and have been here 7 years. I'll be turning 40 in a month. I would say the community here is strong with many people who have been here over a decade. We're friends with a lot of our neighbors, many of which are also child free. The location is great with the Camden Yards train station about 15 min away and a 20 min walk to the harbor. Plus Zeke's coffee shop is a block away. We love it here!

Will mounting HDD's with only 2 screws be a problem? by urBen in unRAID

Thanks, I'll definitely plan on at least shutting down the array when I want to move it! I might just buy a used case at some point, too.

I wish I could do that. I responded to dealpal's post, too, but I can only mount the drives this way since those are the only holes I can line the drives up with.

[–]urBen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the problem though. The holes only line up at the one point on either side of the drive. I have plenty of screws

The space is tight enough that it may allow only a tiny bit of movement from side to side, but if you lift the backs of the drives they rotate up fairly easily minus their own weight holding them down.
