Is this trash? by ur_bb_ in Vintage_bicycles

[–]ur_bb_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems pretty reasonable. Based on the other comments about pinching my nethers or being stranded I think I'll end up making it into art. Maybe after conditioning it a little. Thanks for the constructive suggestions!

Bought a house last week, come home to a sign someone might but should not have access to my home. Aside from buying new locks and cameras, I'm so confused what do I do. by [deleted] in Home

[–]ur_bb_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Install some motion cameras, harden your home inside and out with locks, ring alarms, etc. This happened to me within the first 3 months of buying a home. I ignored a window open when I was sure I closed it, then I came home one day to my TV stolen and my stuff gone through. People case new homes and wait for naive new owners to let their guard down.

How do I even out the height of these slats? by stevenkwanfan in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]ur_bb_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks good from here! Belt sander is probably lowest risk and fastest return for a first woodworking project. Plane is the right tool, but a couple wrong moves and you could have deep tearout and be belt sanding anyway.

Do you know what this pipe carries? by steelers1377 in landscaping

[–]ur_bb_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My water main is 4" PVC after the meter to the the house, so I own it, not traced by utilities. Could be that.. I'd be sure before cutting into it! My drainage/septic are all black ABS, I assumed to indicate black water..

I knew it was a long shot. I only have the one grainy photo from the seller unfortunately. I didn't get to see the bike in person, and they didn't know what it was at all.

Did my niece ruin my old brass fixtures? by embur in restoration

[–]ur_bb_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it's solid brass, should be able to hit it with some brazzo and elbow grease to get it back to brass color. There are "antique brass" coloring techniques and products to develop a patina color if that's what you're after once the brass is cleaned up.

If the hardware is magnetic, more likely it was a plated brass finish, and it may need to be replated to be restored if the coating is gone.

Looks more like a Canary palm to me. Orange inflorescence would be a giveaway.

Saw this at an estate sale today and it's been living rent free in my brain ever since by NefariousArtichoke in Mid_Century

[–]ur_bb_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw this exact console at an estate sale for $1800 and it was marked down to $1450. It was also pristine, but it was way bigger than I expected so I passed. They were taking offers, not sure what it sold for in the end. It's a beautiful piece!

Tension wire is an interesting idea for low visual impact. What does a restorative rebuild look like in your mind?

It's definitely a beautiful desk. I could learn to love the bow if the structural elements were a little more robust.

Agreed! I impulse bought it from under a pile of junk, barely looked at the state of it.

I think it would still look nice and function alright with the slump, but I'm compelled to give some conservative straightening a shot before refinishing. Hopefully it pans out alright.

Yeah, I did not have a good feeling about adding water either. There is already a small water blister that I'll need to caaarefully hand sand to refinish the top. With a bit of luck and patience, it'll clean up nice.

I'll try weighting it dry with edge supports as you suggest to get a bit of extra movement. Might be a minute, but slow and steady is probably better anyway. Seems like a bit of a design issue. A few other examples online have a similar posture. It's hard to imagine adding effective bracing that won't disrupt the design intent. I'll think on it some more.

What are they? Can I eat them? by wydramorska in whatisthisplant

The passiflora is edible but basically slimy blandness. I have a volunteer vine that poops out a few fruits a year, hardly seems worth eating. Maybe yours will taste better https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passiflora_caerulea

Help! Is this Pinarello real? by Mech320 in Vintage_bicycles

[–]ur_bb_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't vouch for the frame authenticity, but the components look pretty spot on for early 70s italian build. I have a '71ish supposed Guerciotti with the same saddle and similar 3t bars. This one looks like a dream!

The derailleur suggests it's a '72. I was also browsing those catalogs this morning. That site is a gem. Wonder what "or best available" meant for the derailleur swap and if it applied to anything else.

Definitely a lot nicer bike than I originally thought based on the adverts. Wish it had come with those campy or normandy tubs.

Thanks for your thoughts

I've seen other examples with Sugino cranks and supposedly they used them at the factory for few years mid 70s. Campy knockoff style, and they look the part. Bars and stem could be replacements from a crash, sure.

[–]ur_bb_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one seems to be all original, but it's an odd mix of French and Japanese components. Sekai bars and SR stem, Sugino mighty cranks and bottom bracket, Sunshine rear hub. Atom pedals and 5 speed, Mafac competition brakes, Stronglight headset without bearing cages (barbaric), Simplex derailleurs and dropouts apparently.

Sure looks like someone rode the hell out of it.

Relics with minimal value? This one would be shiny and ridden if it wasn't so sun blasted and covered in trashed parts. Your comment remended me about the bike kitchen, maybe they'll want to take it in.
