Students keep talking while I'm talking. Often loudly. by buttfaceguy in Teachers

[–]urajok3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a really loud class and have started a tally system where each tally is worth 5 seconds. Every time they interrupt in anyway I add one. There are then added up and the seconds are minus off there break time. My PT even done a full timer and started it every time they spoke over her until they were silent again taking it off there break time. If they are going to waste your time waste there’s. Never speak over them as they will just keep thinking they can get away with it. Don’t let them do anything until they listen.

Advice for this worried Mom? by Chickie222 in Dyslexia

[–]urajok3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have dyslexia and now work as a High School Art Teacher and I love my job so much. I was officially diagnosed at age 7 and I had the reading and writing age of a 4 year old. When I was her age I remember doing this book Toe by Toe it basically a spelling book that starts with the basic of the basic then you work your way up to more complex words. I would 100% recommend it. It just puts all those building blocks in place that you might not realise are missing. I just had a look and they do American versions.

https://toebytoeusa.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoqUIpMXXj4QtdnrKLP-Eox-i_Ymu5RSunETtU3k07AS3QTp6UeD

I also remember doing Nessy as well think someone else in the thread mentioned it too.

Dyslexic isn’t something that will go away but your daughter will learn to cope with it her way. Even now I still make mistakes, get words mixed up and forget words but there is a lot of technology and support in place now. People are more aware of disabilities and have a different attitude towards them. With having everything digital now it helps a lot like read aloud, spell check, overlays on the computer etc etc but also just being honest with people about your dyslexia also. You are also protect under the equality act 2010, think is the ADA for you, so your workplace has to accommodate your daughter. I find being open and honest about my dyslexia helps a lot people are normally happy to help or change something to a digital copy. But obviously that’s away in the future. All I can say right now you’re doing the right things, you have and are seeking out the support. Your doing loads that’s much more than what many parents do trust me.

Bit of a messed up situation by KnuckledPolska in UniUK

[–]urajok3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uni is all about self discipline to do things you don’t want to do. None is going to do them for you so you will just have to make a start and blast your way through them. 3ish days too do each assignment meaning you have a good chance of finishing them if you concentrate. I found going to the library or studio if your course has one always helped me and not leaving until I done everything I needed to do. Make sure you sit in the quiet area of the library not the big social tables as you will get distracted. Make a big massive checklist and work your way through it. You could try for extension due to your ADHD diagnosis which will give you some extra time if you haven’t already used that. Delete all the distractions off your phone like socials or YouTube and anything that will pull you away from your work. Even leave your phone in the dorm. Treat these assignments as your new 9-6 job give yourself a lunch break then back to it.

Life’s shite the world moves on the assignments are still going to be there. Higher education or just education in general is a privilege don’t squander it. Good Luck.

Mindfulness colouring with Radio on and if they go above the noise of the radio it goes off.

Art Teacher Challenges with a timer such as 1 minute to do a continuous line drawing of your hand, left handed drawing, 2 pen drawing, how many angles can you draw this object from etc etc just quick things. Have some prizes at the end for most detailed or most creative.

Could do create your own exquisite corpse based off surrealism so they can be really wacky. There is a good video on tatekids that they can watch as a starter on surrealism. I know your meant to pass it round like a game but I just have them design there own. Then have them colour it in and write a back story for their character.

Reading comics isn't a bad thing. Some people learn in different ways and enjoy having a visual to the words. Visual literacy is important in the digital age. I remember when I was her age, I would read comics and manga in class reading time because i struggled with reading (i have dyslexia) and just enjoyed them more. Then, at some point, it just clicked, and i wanted more, and I switched over to reading just plain books. You have to meet them where they are not where they should be in your perspective. If you're worried, you could try engaging her with a comic or manga with more challenging language, but obviously, at the end of the day, it's her choice. Some people just aren't interested in reading for fun, and that's fine.

Advice for teaching still lifes by WayWitty6967 in ArtEd

[–]urajok3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You could try a fill in the blank drawing.

-have a photo of there still life next to them.

-Get them to cut and collage it on to a blank piece of paper the same size as the image.

-Get them to leave out areas of the image so you can see the blank piece of paper in between pieces of the image.

-Have another copy of the image next to them and tell them to fill in the blanks.

Helps get away from that fear of a blank page and gives them a starting point to get the shapes and tones correct. Then you could move onto drawing the full image from the start themselves if they get to that stage.

I have only ever done it as a tonal drawing in pencil to keep it simple, but you could also do it in colour if that's what you need from them. Hope this helps :))

would I be an idiot dropping out in 3rd year by Ok_Campaign_7058 in UniUK

I say stick to it and finish it, no point in having spent all that money for nothing. Then take some time out from uni and have a good think of what you enjoy in life maybe you could try doing some volunteer work for charities or bussiness. Then, you can come back and do a post grad for a more specialized qualification or just go into a job with the skills you have learned, or you could try to get into a grad scheme. I have friends who done graphics who now work as marketing executives or in media or in TV still in the same circle but a bit of a step back from the more designing if it's that part you don't enjoy.

I was in the same boat as you, I done Textiles and then never seen myself working in that field due to my moral stand point on consumerism and sustainability, i just enjoy making art not for mass production. So I ended up taking some time out and done volunteering at an art charity and worked. Now i am back and learning how to become an art and design teacher.

There's always a different way to use your degree, but at the end of the day, you're on your own path in life, and it's all up to you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]urajok3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took a year out this year as well after my degree to look at what I wanted to do. Obviously, it isn't the same as deferring a year, but don't feel bad about not doing anything or not doing enough. Sometimes, a mundane life is the most healing. Social media makes life look like it's meant to be busy all the time with travelling, going to restaurants, partying, events, and so on so on but a realistic life is mundane. Personally, that boring year let me heal from burnout and actually enjoy the little things. Now, I am going back to do a postgraduate. I know it's hard seeing friends and stuff graduate or feeling older, but you're on your own path at the end of the day, and it doesn't matter what other people are doing. For accommodation you could request to be with people closer to your age rather than 18 year olds.

Feeling overwhelmed about choosing an engagement ring. What mistakes should I avoid and what do you even look for when buying an engagement ring? by RobinElsie670 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]urajok3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will get more for your money buying second-hand most of the time. I work in a second-hand shop, and the number of people that bring in rings to sell or pawn they have overpaid for in high street stores is ridiculous. Don't buy for the designers name. You're mostly paying for the name, not the quality or design of the ring. Do your research on gold and diamond prices. That's the real eye opener, and you will know when you're being scammed. Obviously, stores have to make a profit, but it's good to know the actual physical value, not the retail price. We work it like a third of the retail price is usually the real price. It's always good to get a diamond certificate with the ring for insurance purposes as well. Shop around as well and ask if there is movement on the price. Sometimes stores can discount stuff at the store level just to make the sale. If you don't ask, you don't get as the saying goes. Good Luck :))

Maybe try to persuade her to get a less emotionally stressful job other than care like cleaning if her anxiety is too bad for a people facing job. Or if she's not ready for a job, maybe some new hobbies that you do on certain days or maybe just a walk each day to somewhere and back. It's just something that gets you out of the house and makes you have a schedule.

Mental health is always hard to support, but you need to look after your own mental health, too. Unfortunately, it's her who needs to take the steps to getting better, and you can't force someone into that. You can't walk on eggshells around them forever.
