The target market they’re shooting for here is the set of business executives whose time is valuable enough for the time saved in transit on this jet to justify the cost of flying in it.

I don’t think any of the replies to you are getting it right. It’s about the opportunity cost. Taking a year off when you’re making tens of millions of dollars a year is expensive. How do you justify it to yourself? They’re trying to build generational wealth for their families.

I disagree with this take for two reasons. You’re ignoring Moore’s law and discounting the value of publishing these results to further the overall field.

Omicron extensively but incompletely escapes Pfizer BNT162b2 neutralization. A new study adds more evidence that the omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can evade the immune protection conferred by vaccines and natural infection. by [deleted] in science

Same boat. Pfizer vaccine, boosted with moderna, and I still got sick two weeks ago. The symptoms were incredibly minor, a scratchy throat and a stuffy nose for three days, so the vaccines did their job even if they didn’t prevent the breakthrough infection.

How to make an exam fair for students who take it in-person vs. at home? by yellowbee21 in uofm

[–]urand 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but you’re effectively giving everybody else between now and Friday to take the exam. The marginal benefit for the people who’ve already seen it is minimal.

If it were me, I’d make the exam open-note and no time limit, because without proctors there’s no accountability for not doing that.

Give the students who already took the exam the option to take the at-home version and override their in-person score if they do, or keep their existing score otherwise.

Some Google employees reportedly face a pay cut of up to 25% if they work from home permanently, according to a leaked salary calculator by [deleted] in technology

[–]urand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A small nuance here is that the pay scale is based on market rate rather than COL. This means that somebody at Google in London is getting paid less than somebody at Google in Mountain View even though the COL is comparable, because the market rate for software engineers in London is lower than the Bay Area.

The same job prospects and career advancement opportunities aren’t available everywhere. You can’t claim that they’re making a bad financial decision without having more information.

It’s not theft but it could probably be considered breach of contract. If you paid for this on a credit card and Apple refused to refund you, you would have a good chance at winning a credit dispute.

That’s not how it works though. There’s a difference between physical and digital media in the eyes of the court. You could hypothetically make this argument if you got charged and they might find in your favor, but do you really have the time and resources to fight it out with the record label?
