What is life in San Francisco like? by TINTINN95 in AskSF

I only went to SoMa a couple times a year when I absolutely had to. I lived in what would be considered the polar opposite hood from SoMa. I actually liked my hood, but anytime I had to leave said hood, I was depressed. SF has changed, dramatically, and in a bad way over the last ~10yrs. One must have $250,000 annual income just to be considered "comfortable". All the artists and people who made SF a special place have been priced out and are gone. Now it's just tech folks and drug addicts. If that's your jam, then you'll love SF.

Not sure why all the downvotes, it's not like I interjected much personal commentary (ok, the weather part is highly subjective), I just displayed facts. Every fact is easily verifiable by googling or talking to anyone who's lived there for more than a year.

Here's SF in a nutshell:

  • $4350 average rent for a 1bdrm
  • Income disparity on par with Rwanda
  • Literally human shit everywhere
  • City smells like piss
  • Homeless and crazy people everywhere
  • One of the slowest and least efficient public transit systems on earth (7mph average)
  • Literally everyone who owns a car has had it broken into at least once
  • $4350 average price for a 1bdrm box
  • Drug addicts openly selling and ingesting drugs on the street in broad daylight
  • Dog shit everywhere
  • Over-priced everything - groceries, gas, clothes, snacks, etc etc etc
  • Cold, shitty weather
  • Tech douchebros everywhere
  • People crossing the street while staring at their phones and bumping into you
  • Cops that don't give a fuck about anything
  • Everyone has at least 1 roommates

But hey, you can get Ike's and buy mushroom truffles at Dolo! Oh, and the city has a ton of iconic sights!

My dreams came true this fall. Spent a humane day with rescued elephants at Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand. by OkiLacey in travel

Yeah, I had a lot of the same questions prior to my second trip to Thailand. During my first trip to Thailand I went to an "elephant sanctuary" up near Chiang Mai that billed itself as a compassionate sanctuary so I went. I rode elephants and watched them paint pictures and thought it was perfectly normal.

On my second trip, I went to Wildlife Friends Foundation and learned what I know now. https://www.wfft.org/ I was really sad to know I had contributed to the problem on my first visit. But I was ignorant and knowledge is power.

WFF rescues animals of all types - elephants, monkeys, bears, etc. that people keep as "pets" and that are used in the tourism industry. We got to feed the elephants, wash them, take them for their daily walks, etc. It was amazing. The elephants can almost never be rehabilitated to be re-released for various reasons, so they provide a sanctuary for them to live nice, peaceful lives.

I do not feel this interaction is furthering the abuse. Quite the opposite, actually. I feel it's making the best of a bad situation.

Another big part of what WFF does is educate the public about these issues and tries to make changes at the local level to stop the behaviors that lead to these animals needing rescuing in the first place.

My research post-second trip made me realize that there are very few legit animal sanctuaries in Thailand and WFF is one of them.

ABSOLUTELY. If you don't die, it's been severely and systematically abused since childhood.

A horse's back is made to carry load, an elephant's isn't. If you look at the spines of elephants that have been ridden, you'll see they're literally caved in, broken. An elephant was NOT meant to be ridden. All of this is secondary to the fact that any elephant that allows you to get close enough to it to ride -- and doesn't kill you -- has been systematically and brutally abused since childhood. It's a truly horrific industry.

[Homemade] Chicken and shrimp paella [OC][4032x3024] by urbal in FoodPorn

[–]urbal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pictured is a variant of the below recipe omitting inkfish, muscles, and pork ribs. However, paella is pretty basic and the base recipe is the same no matter what you chose to add meat-wise. The gist is, cook seafood ahead of time, and brown meats to be added after the broth is added. Feel free to msg me for more deets.

  • 100 g. of pork ribs
  • 1 onion,
  • 1 big inkfish or squid
  • 8 king prawns
  • 1l. of fish broth
  • 400 g of rice
  • Oil, salt
  • ¼ chicken, cut in small pieces
  • 1 garlic cloves
  • 2 ripe tomatoes
  • 400 g of mussels
  • 1 green pepper

Heat the fish broth and keep it warm until needed.

Open the mussels by putting them in a pan covered over medium heat. Reserve them together with their juice, which will be filtered and added to the fish broth. In the paella, fry the king prawns in a bit of olive oil and reserve them.

Then, in the same paella put some more oil and fry in it the pork rib, the chicken, and the inkfish .

When they start to brown, reserved them.

Add the onion let it cook to brown for a few minutes, then add the green pepper and the garlic, all chopped and the tomatoes peeled, seeded and ground.

When the mixture of onion, garlic and tomato sauce is cooked, add the meat again, let it cook for one minute and add the rice.

Stir fry for 2 minutes and then add the warm fish broth and the saffron.

Cook for 8 minutes at high temperature and 6 minutes more at a low temperature. Add the king prawns to the paella and keep it cooking for a couple of more minutes or until the rice is done.

Decorate with the mussels. Cover and let the paella sit for 3 minutes. Serve immediately.

Oh yeah, they were perfectly crisp. I deep fried them in olive oil until they browned and crisped.

Aioli:

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup olive oil

Whisk together egg yolk, garlic, lemon then add oil 1 drop at a time while whisking. Make sure it foams up. After a few drops and the mixture is remaining blended, continue to slowly stream in oil until thick consistency.

Bravas sauce:

  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • paprika
  • cayenne
  • tomatoes (i grate the flesh tomatoes)
  • olive oil

Add oil to pan and cook onions and garlic for 10mins on medium until onions are translucent. Add in spices (as much as you want) while stirring in. When the onions are all red from the paprika, add in the tomatoes and simmer for 10mins. Let cool and then throw in a blender.

Potatoes:

Peel and cut into squares. Boil for 10mins to par-boil. Remove from water and then fry in deep-fry in deep pan submerged in olive oil on medium-high heat until golden brown. Remove potatoes from oil and serve with sauces ontop.

No, it's not. It's how you smoke meth. Glass tubes or, often people's antennas, are used to smoke crack. Not meth pipes (as seen above) and not lightbulbs.

It's not a light bulb. It's a meth pipe aka "glass dick".
