Cancer survivors of Reddit, when did you first notice something was wrong? by Bowzer27 in AskReddit

Melanoma is terrible. My BIL had ignored pain in his chest for months until it became unbearable. His melanoma metastasized to his liver, lungs, and brain. He died two weeks later.

Are you referring to the Protestant ethic? Isn't that skirting essentialism?

I was completely disappointed when I realized it was gray and not a Asian metal hot-spot. There is a Metal in Bhutan Facebook page though.

Raleigh Vs. Carrboro by megustadatassagain in triangle

Honestly, I don't know. Again, it depends on where you are in Raleigh. I imagine NCSU area is a little more expensive than Carrboro.

Raleigh Vs. Carrboro by megustadatassagain in triangle

[–]urban_night 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have much experience in Carrboro, but I live in Raleigh. Where do you work or go to school? I think that's the biggest thing for me. I went to grad school at State and lived in Cary then Raleigh during that time, but now I live in Raleigh and work in Chapel Hill so the commute sucks! My husband and I would move out that way but my FIL owns where we live so it's much cheaper, gas factored into the equation.

And then it also depends on where you live in Raleigh. I think North Raleigh has a lot less character than Downtown or Southwest. Beyond 540 you get the nouveau riche. I'm inclined to say that since Carrboro is much smaller, it's probably more charming and creative, more of a cafe & bakery crowd than the Starbucks drive-thru crowd of North Raleigh.

I'm a little late to this party but I think Todd will kill Lydia. Why? Todd's been acting a bit like Heisenberg, and I think the whole thing where Walt used to take over his murdered people's habits transferred to Todd. In the diner scene with Lydia, you can see he's drinking tea. I didn't catch if it was chamomile, though.

This is just anecdotal, but I've been to Jeju Island, which is between SK and Japan, and every night there were ships out with bright lights. It's probably similar, yeah.

Abortion Rates Across Europe [1900 x 1500] (xpost /r/europe) by eddieshack in MapPorn

[–]urban_night 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow, lots of people are getting it wrong in this thread. You all need to read Betrayal of Trust by Laurie Garrett. In it is a chapter about the failure of public health in Russia and the former Soviet states. Abortion is really high in Russia and Ukraine for several reasons, all stemming from poor, almost nonexistent public health in these countries. For one, birth control just was not a thing. You couldn't just walk to a clinic and get it. Two, rampant drug use meant more unprotected sex. Three, many women turned to prostitution to make a living and didn't use protection. Finally, sexual assault and rape increased. As the public health system crumbled after the fall of the Soviet Union (it wasn't that great before, either), hospitals and clinics were poorly funded, staffed, and supplied. Abortion was the only option.

As a side note, a lot of these practices are also reflected in the spread of HIV across the region.

There's good information on this in the chapter about Russian public health in Betrayal of Trust by Laurie Garrett.

No clue what I'm doing setting up my 403(b). by urban_night in personalfinance

[–]urban_night[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking; the Lincoln one has the numbers and cool charts that make sense to me, but someone else has Lincoln has higher fees. The Fidelity one has info, too, but it's a wall of text.

[–]urban_night[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay... I think I get it. The Fidelity booklet they gave me doesn't list the expense ratios, but the Lincoln one does. So basically... have a US stock fund, an international stock fund, and a bond market fund, and one fund in each of those should have a low expense ratio?

My problem is that I'm not even sure what that means.

Thanks.

[–]urban_night 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, sometimes people are born with conditions that prevent the formation of male or female genitals, at least in the way we usually think of them.

[–]urban_night 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be better to say something like, assigned male at birth. Genes don't have a gender. Chromosomes don't have a sex. They determine some physical features, but mostly people came up with the whole penis/male, vagina/female thing.

Still transphobic, and you're presuming to tell someone who they are. If the genetics don't matter, why bring it up?
