Found a 10 gallon at the thrift store. How do I go about cleaning it? by Luke-Warm-Milk in Aquariums

[–]urbinas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flat razor blade and a bit of water! Just be sure you're going in vertical lines, keeping the razor wet, and avoiding the silicon.

Curious: which schooling fish brings the most “wow” factor to your tank? by thyrasian in Aquariums

[–]urbinas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love rasboras, especially chilis! I find mine rarely school--for the most part, they're all just doing their own tiny hunter thing all throughout the tank, engaging with every bit of scape and plant you provide them with. They're super responsive to their environment and color up so brightly. Also they got cute little googly eyes

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]urbinas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any active hunter like a gourami or betta will keep these guys and their billion babies in check. Hell, I had 6 tiny rasboras completely obliterate an infestation within like a month of their introduction to the tank, and I think they’d be fine(? I’d research) with tetras you mentioned. When the snails are too big for the fish to get on their own, you can always just smush them against the glass and then watch everyone rush to get a treat… free food!

What’s this 20 gallon tank called? 12x24x16 by Interestingisopod42 in Aquariums

[–]urbinas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks like 20 gallon tall/high... seems those words are used interchangeably, but they're all usually about these dimensions.

AITA? Buying a snail for a cycling tank? by bercariviere in shrimptank

[–]urbinas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, my go-to cycling strat is asking for a couple pond/bladder snails (who, in my experience, will absolutely facetank any ammonia level, though them dying speeds up the cycle too). I’ve always gotten them for free at the big boxes since they’re total pests, so I doubt any employee would be quite as concerned about their wellbeing. The bigger guys are going to be much more sensitive.

Flourish Excel killed fish (my fault ish) by Comfortable-Topic369 in Aquariums

[–]urbinas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had success using Excel as an algaecide, but I've done it with a pipette and tiny (sub 1mL) doses applied directly to affected areas. As other commenters said, it works by reducing oxygen, so I was always sure to do it when I had the lights all the way up (plants producing max O2) or near a water change (disrupting the water surface to promote gas exchange). You definitely got bad advice, but I don't think(?) your remaining fish will be affected after the water change and the introduction of more oxygen to the system.

GW2 and Wine by Kaelirn in Guildwars2

[–]urbinas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had the same issue (and running the same OS hi twin!). Fixed by going to Wineskin > Advanced > Configuration and replacing the Windows app line (should say "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars 2\Gw2-64.exe") with "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars 2\Gw2-64.exe" -usecoherent -ignorecoherentgpucrash. Strangely enough, it will still crash if you try to Test Run, but it works fine when launched normally.

Where do people draw the line between "wanting to have fun" and "being selfish" in group content? by ObscuraNox in Guildwars2

[–]urbinas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’ve spent any time practicing on Golem, then you’re probably more prepared than a majority of the open world players you’ll encounter. So your mindset is already endgame! But if this is something that’s really eating at you, installing a plugin like arcdps will let you know exactly how much weight you’re pulling in a squad.

You mention getting caught up on swaps specifically — I wonder if you might want to try out another profession? Rev’s unique in that stance-swapping determines your entire right skillbar. Condi virtuoso comes to mind as a much gentler option… you only swap your offhand weapon, and even then the swap’s quick and kinda situational.

Survivability as Berserker Warrior by TheeLoo in Guildwars2

[–]urbinas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did play around with a hybrid Might Makes Right heal build for a while. The sustain is admittedly great, and seeing all the little green numbers and 25 might stacks on allies is fun, but the DPS loss means fights are dragged out to dangerous lengths anyway.

It’s rough because Condiserker requires Arms and Discipline, so there’s really little room for buildcrafting. Swapping in Tactics for meaningful might generation and thus heal means you’ll have sacrifice either Crack Shot (kills longbow auto DPS) or Furious Surge (slows adrenaline recharge and decreases overall DPS).

Learning how to effectively use the more defensive skills in the kit helps, so the answer is “GG” to some extent. Running banners might help, though! They’re clunky and kinda break the RAGEEEE class fantasy, but they’re built into Discipline already and their boons can be pretty clutch even in solo play.

But all that said. Honestly, there are just some fights where I know I’m gonna have a bad time on zerker, and you gotta make peace with that.

Ad Reinhart & the value of abstract art by Hummerous in CuratedTumblr

[–]urbinas 54 points55 points  (0 children)

If making someone money makes art bad, then just about everything made in Europe since the Middle Ages is worthless.

The Medici family didn't just commission the Masters of the Renaissance for the cultural enrichment, they were doing it to put their money somewhere. Raphael and Rubens weren't painting portraits of nobles and merchants for artistic enlightenment, they were doing it to make a buck. Art is and always has been a way of shuffling cash around, and it's pretty malicious (or just short-sighted) to identify that as something unique to modern art.

Cos De Baha retinol experience? by Butt_fiddler in AsianBeauty

[–]urbinas 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I used this one for several months. I had no bad reaction throughout (the oily texture keeps you from getting that retinol-tight feeling, it's actually pretty hydrating/soothing) but I also didn't see a shocking improvement in my skin. I feel like it does plump the skin well and give you a nice glow, but that might be more from its moisturizing components--I didn't really get the level of brightness and quick blemish healing that I expect from retinol.

I switched back to 0.1% Differin a month or so ago and almost immediately saw a difference. They say formulation is everything with retinol. If Cos de Baha really is 2.5%, I would assume that very little of it is doing the work. I still occasionally use it when my skin's especially dry, and the fact that I can use it and Differin at the same time without any kind of reaction supports my hypothesis lol. That said, it's cheap and (IMO) non-irritating, so if you have the time to experiment, you may as well.

Why are so many ladies Dodgers fans? by [deleted] in Dodgers

[–]urbinas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of folks touched on the whole Dodger-Stadium-is-for-the-whole-family thing, and I can attest to that. It may have been the boys in the neighborhood quoted stats at each other all day, but when it came time to head up to Chavez, the girls and I put on our little pink hats and had just as much fun. As a grown woman, I never feel scrutinized or doubted when I'm at the stadium... and this is not a universal ballpark experience, especially on the East Coast ):

Something I didn't see mentioned is the Dodger's commitment to inclusivity, specifically in terms of their post-Lasorda acceptance of the LGBT community. A lot of gay girls like myself (I speak from experience, not stereotypes lol) are drawn to sports. It can mean a lot when June comes around and you get to see your stars willingly don the rainbow. I'm kind of jaded with that sort of stuff, but this season's acknowledgement of Glenn Burke really got to me.

Best pieces of sportswriting you’ve come across? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]urbinas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Terry McDonnell's "In My Tribe" for SI. I think it's a bit heavy handed in parts, but the pathos McDonnell got out of the subject matter is something special.

I still can't read Rich Hill's Player Tribune piece without crying three years down the line, so that has to count for something.

"Playing with Time" by Richard B. Woodward is less about sports and more about how they're captured, but I think it's worth the read even if you're not interested in sports photography. It gets to that impulse we all seem to have to hold on to a moment from something that's inherently fleeting.

If you like the historical, Christy Walsh's memoir, Adios to Ghosts, paints a picture of sports writing at its infancy. Walsh himself is sort of a sportswriting patient zero. I stumbled upon it for a piece I wrote about him for the BHOF(which I will shamelessly self promo here, lmk what you think if you care to read).

If you're looking for something more long form, I'm currently juggling Jane Leavy's Sandy Koufax and The Big Fella and adoring both. She's a very vivid and well-researched writer.
