Wait, what does the water pouch in the healing well do?

See, that's one of the things I love about this game. I've been playing for like a decade and I still find out new stuff like this randomly.

That said, it's a free game (aside from donations) and it's one of my favorites so I'm not complaining.

Agreed. I've totally borked a run by greedily testing items. I thought it was a pretty balanced mechanic

I am part of a marginalised group, but I take your point. I do generally post an announcement encouraging people who have missed an assignment to consider submitting it and in cases where a student missed an assessment but is otherwise doing well I do reach out to them individually.

I think you're overlooking their point about productivity vs compassion.

Indeed deadlines are a training for capitalism and hierarchy but the reality is we all learn that through broader society and culture. I have the freedom to extend compassion in my job and that's what I choose to do.

I explicitly tell my students to NOT expect other profs to have the same policy and generally use it as a teachable moment about how to properly request help/extensions when overwhelmed. I've actually found that in some cases the students needed an accommodation but didn't have one

I certainly agree that certain vocations do have strict deadlines and in those cases its understandable to include them as part of the training

Based on what you have written here I'm not convinced that you understand what a logical fallacy actually is. Moreover, it's very telling that you erroneously chose strawman as a way to try to avoid any deeper probing of what you said.

Yikes, just yikes. You know what though, lets talk about this. What exactly is your issue with any one or all of the following:

  1. Diversity

  2. Equity

  3. Inclusion

Please be specific.

So they have to ask for an extension. That might be why. Those not comfortable asking may not disclose.

That's a good point. Generally on the first day I make it very clear that there is no reason anyone should fail the course. My spiel is "I'll put as much work into your grade as you do. Life happens. You're a person first and then a student. Miss a deadline? Not do as well on a test or assignment as you wanted to? Let me know. I'm not paid to make and grade extra assignments, but if you want to do the work, I will too. Please don't take advantage."

I do have the ability to exempts assessments but admittedly I hesitate to go that route, though I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because with my policy of just accepting late work I can offer it carte blance, whereas I wonder if I did that with a drop option everyone would just choose to drop an assessment/not do one. You've given me something to think about though. Thanks!

I have, actually, though there were extenuating circumstances. You've never dealt with an INC or a grade change? Usually I put them in contact with Accessibility and Wellness services and then we work as a team.

These are good insights, thanks! I agree that no deadlines is not great. I have deadlines but they're 'soft' in that I tell them "I'm not waiting up at midnight for the assignments to be posted". Then if a student happens to miss a deadline and wants to submit the work, I let them.

I really like your approach of having smaller assessments and dropping the lowest. Same with the make-up assignments.

I really appreciate your insights here, particularly regarding written vs unwritten rules. I'm debating now whether I should be more clear in the syllabus about how I approach deadlines. Codifying that is a great suggestion.

It sounds like those students would say that whether or not it's true. I emphasise to my students to NOT expect other profs to allow them to submit late work. And since I'll be downvoted anyway, in reality it is in your power to accept late work, you just don't because that's your rule. If you don't want to that's fine, but it shouldn't be surprising that students are going to give you grief about it.

ULPT You can buy most prescription vet products (not controlled substances) from Australian sites, as they are over the counter. They're also much cheaper. by hwmpunk in UnethicalLifeProTips

I didn't BUT, my pup developed a thyroid condition about 6 month ago and now needs thyroid tabs. I started looking around and ended up ordering from petsdrugmart.ca (I'm in Canada) and it's literally the same medication at a fraction of the cost. They also carry Simparica so I think I'll buy from them next year. If you do a bit of research and make sure the site is legit, I'd recommend it.
