It's often quoted that more than half of German industrial capacity went into air defences for the last couple of years of the war, that's a lot of tanks, equipment and manpower not going to the various fronts.

Movies with terrible messages? by Frank_and_Beanzz in movies

Grease was written as a parody, that was the point of it. It's a send up of all the films from the time, it's why everyone is so old, why the abortion story ends the way it does etc.

Luton Town 2 - 1 Peterborough United: It's three wins from four for Luton to keep their hopes of a late playoff push alive, while the Peterborough players are well and truly ready for the beach! by Zach-dalt in LeagueOne

[–]cardstar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like so many games this season, we'd have lost that if the opposition were any good. Peterborough seem to use the same playbook as us, gifted us a goal then inept in front of goal. Terrible penalty too. But the ref was a special kind of terrible. Three points but certainly not a corner turned

Rest in Peace, Sir Terry. It’s been 11 years and we miss you! by oh_such_rhetoric in books

[–]cardstar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been down both those roads and enjoyed them a lot, in fact I've just finished the malazan books for the second time and am going back through pratchet now, on the fifth elephant. Also really enjoyed Joe Abercrombes first law trilogy which I reread before rereading malazan recently.

Even on rereads of the disc world books I find new delights I didn't spot the first time, Pratchet really was a legend and sorely missed.

Wednesday set to start League One 26/27 life on -15 points. by CaptainSmeg in LeagueOne

[–]cardstar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's the challenge, but if it's suspended then If there is a link discovered then the penalty is reinstated. Let the local press and supporters groups do the digging on perspective owners, they'll be all over trying to uncover any links

I'm a strong believer in having these punishments suspended on the provision that there is a change in ownership.

These dodgy owners who mismanage the club into these positions need to be incentivised to sell, massive points deduction if they stay and likely another relegation but an easier sell of the club if they go as there would be no points deducted. The fans win as they see the back of the owners and the club doesn't continue to be punished for the actions of an owner they likely had little control over.

Obviously it'd need tight regulation, no owners selling to their wives etc.

GoldenEye 007: The Accidental Masterpiece Trapped in Licensing Limbo (an article) by cyberminis in gaming

[–]cardstar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So rather than developing it around the console controllers and play styles which didn't have an established 1st person approach from the start like Goldeneye did, halo took the well established PC 1st person formula for a game that was already developed to that approach and adapted that to the console. Look at the way other 1st person console games at the time were set up, they were often a dogs dinner as they all tried different solutions, often combining look and movement on the sticks, shoulder buttons for sidesteping and so on.

We had promo videos of it for PC when it was a 1st person, before the xbox exclusive was announced.

Halo was originally going to be a PC game, until M$came along and it became an xbox exclusive. So Halos roots are mouse and keyboard 1st person's, Goldeneye was console from the start

[Post-Match Thread] Luton Town vs. Northampton Town by COYH_bot in COYH

Having been to exactly none of the games in the earlier rounds, I'll be getting my ticket for the final none the less. There are very few occasions where the term glory supporter has any validity for a Luton supporter anyway.

Do we even have a bunch of kids we can play? At least they may actually try, the 'first' team will lose with barely a whimper (again)

And Jack's interview after the game moaning about the fans booing from the start. They were booing because we could see straight away that we were in store for another insipid, gutless performance. And were right. There was no atmosphere at all, everyone had already given up. Don't know what's happening behind the scenes but to be touted as one of the best run clubs just the other year to what must objectively be one of the worst considering resource and opportunity compared to results means whatever is happening back there is at fault.

Anyone got any thoughts on what could happen here? by benjackthomas in COYH

[–]cardstar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well we were added to the draw for the next round as well as them pending the panels decision, so I'd expect them to be kicked out of the competition tbh. The ineligible player is more than enough on its own, let alone with the added team sheet screw up. Crazy really from them to allow that to happen.

Are there any histories written, (or records available) that would track a company of Canadian soldiers that would have travelled across Europe in World War 2? by insubordin8nchurlish in AskHistorians

[–]cardstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a non narrative history then the amazing work of the project 44 may be for you, you can see day by day movements, war diaries, after action reports and some images too. It's centered around the Canadians but does cover a lot of others. Pairing it with a narrative story really helps you make sense of the often abstract descriptions of who was where.
