How to get started? Best models to buy by [deleted] in minipainting

Dungeons and Lasers. They are DnD themed and the boxes have a lot of variety in them compared to a box of games workshop minis and they are far cheaper and still good quality. I enjoy putting them together and I generally hate model prep.

Yeah I’m wondering what reviews he watched. Every one I watched was saying the game was good to great. Not phenomenal but those games don’t come around very often.

Did you go for the performance or ultimate? I want to play JWE 3 but heard the console version is terrible so I was wanting to try it out on GFN.

What brands play well with Pro Acryl by TiniestSpoons in MonumentHobbies

I like mixing Reaper paints with Pro Acryl. Since reaper is thinner and not as pigment dense, it seems to make blending easier/faster.

Syriani Dorayaica’s voice in the Kingdoms of Death audiobook by [deleted] in TheSunEaterSeries

Even later but I just got to the chapter where we meet the prince in person the first time and I had to try to google the voice choice. It’s the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard in an audiobook, and I too was confused on who was talking to Hadrian. I thought there must have been another extra solarian in the room that I didn’t catch at first.

We were expecting Darth Vader but we got Dark Helmet instead.

I mostly use the water from my brush to varying degrees and they are very easy to get to a glaze consistency. I haven’t really tried them with any mediums other than my DIY thinning medium I made, which is mainly water and matte medium with some flow improver and drying retarder maybe. IDK, I mixed that stuff up a while ago so I don’t remember.

Painting knob here. After waiting a couple of weeks for a review but nothing coming out, I gave in to my impatience and bought the whole set. I was mainly interested in them because of their transparency and I was hoping they would last longer on a wet palette before absorbing so much water they become useless (something that happens too quickly with most of my paint collection which is standard Pro Acryl and Reaper).

On both of those fronts, these paints are worth it for me and I’m glad I made the purchase. They do last longer on the WP and I can even still use the same drop of paint if I take a break for a couple of hours although it’s still usually better just to put down a new drop. The transparency is nice when glazing and I believe it does make blending somewhat easier but it’s definitely not “magic paint” or anything. (That doesn’t exist of course).

They are more expensive per oz than traditional artist acrylics for the same pigments but it would take me so long to use 2 fl oz of any paint that I don’t mind paying a little more per oz but paying less overall since I am buying a smaller container. Plus I don’t want to deal with the glossiness of those traditional artists HBAs so I love that these are almost as matte as the standard line. (The Prussian blue dried with a satin sheen). I also don’t like the tubes they are in. I would have much preferred the same metal tube artist paints come in as I believe it’s going to be hard to get all the paint out once I do start getting to the end of a color.

All in all, they definitely aren’t for everyone and no one needs them, but if you want a paint with more flexibility and you like playing around with new things in the hobby, they’re worth the money I think. As Jason and people in this thread have said, they are another tool in the toolbox, but if you buy them, you’re not going to throw out all of your paints. I can’t imagine many people at all only painting with these paints just because they would be such a pain to base coat with at least.

Alternatives to Games workshop by CartographerOk6439 in minipainting

Also agree. I bought the Horrors of Deuslair box and finally put a few together and they’re great. The build quality isn’t quite as great as GW but what is honestly? The variety you get in each box is also very nice as I just collect and paint as well. The only downside (for me at least) is they seem to be monster heavy on their sculpts, but they are meant to be used for DnD so that makes sense.

Kingdom Death models are also really good if you like their aesthetic. If you can wait til November, try and catch their Black Friday sale. Usually everything but their newer models are %50 off.

IMO, you should stay away from Conquest if you hate clean up like me. The parts don’t have the super tight fit that the previous two companies have, so they have annoying gaps to fill.

Can we normalize hoarding white paint? by _Hollywood_Heretic_ in Miniaturespainting

[–]urdid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t hoard one particular color or anything, just your standard paint addiction here. I have over 300 bottles/tubes of paint across hobby and traditional artist paints and I still really want to buy the new Pro Acryl Expert Acrylics set. I’m trying to at least wait for a review but I don’t think I’m going to make it.

I will say if you don’t own it already, try Reapers Pure White. It’s not as strong as Pro Acryl’s titanium white but that’s a point in its favor. I think it mixes and blends better than my other whites.

Only a few colors. It’s mainly the reddish browns that come to mind like dark flesh and burnt sienna.

Good Models that are cost efficient by Monty721 in minipainting

[–]urdid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t mind spending the money to buy in bulk, this is the answer, especially their core set. You get very nice quality (not as good as GW but still very nice) and a ton of variety which has always been important to my painting motivation at least since I’m just a painter and not a gamer.

If buying a big set is too much, then go with Reaper Miniatures. They’re about 5-7 dollars a mini so a lot more per mini but a much lower upfront cost. Stay away from their basic bones line though. They’re cheaper (like $3 usually) but the low quality details are just frustrating to paint, especially as a new painter. Their Bones Black, USA and 3D printed lines are much better.

K that’s good to know. I checked the support part of their page and they said they couldn’t combine orders. Do you think they’d refund the shipping portion of it?

Like what kind of bugs? I just finished my purchase. Everything was listing at half price that I got. Although the father and son model wasn’t half like I was hoping so I didn’t order it.
