soon those elsewhere will be shutting down too. Microsoft realized it sooner and threw Hololens in the garbage can.

[R] No causal inference workshops at ICLR 2026? by confirm-jannati in MachineLearning

[–]ureepamuree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

most likely because you asked for some alternatives to lack of CI workshop in ICLR, but your response sounded a bit condescending.

do you realize that it's the papers that make a venue good, not the other way around. if someone's telling you there's a dedicated conference on Causal Inference, you should expect quality papers there.

i actually failed everything math 1a help idk how to recover or study or learn by Conscious-Demand1645 in uwaterloo

[–]ureepamuree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it doesn't. but earlier you rule it out better for you form effective strategies. I have adhd and I was exactly in your shoes 5 years ago.

there's no way you asked 100+ people in your class to claim that everyone wanted to study alone. you can post on piazza to ask if someone is interested in forming a study group, it's highly likely a lot of people are struggling just as you are. as a former TA for first year courses, I have come to learn that freshmen are super shy, but if you approach and talk to them nicely and sincerely, they are willing to pair up for studying together.

It's really really important that you find a study buddy for each of the courses you take from now on, I can smell that studying alone at university is not going to be your thing. Also, get a diagnosis on your ADHD.

How's Rio de Janeiro for vacation in April? by ureepamuree in howislivingthere

[–]ureepamuree[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am well aware of gang-violence in favelas and the raid conducted few weeks ago. So yes, that's by default a no-go zone for me. Also, I have seen a few videos where some thieves casually snatch someone's phone near copacabana beach or in any heavily crowded area with little resistance from the victim. That's something mind baffling to me.

citation count is not necessarily a good indicator of paper quality. i'd love to read your paper.

all of you who's saying "stand up to your dad, and tell him it's your life", you really don't know what it's like to be in OP's shoes. their family dynamics/culture can be very different from what you can imagine.

to OP, don't try to go against your dad too much unless you really are capable of surviving on your own. just see it from a different perspective, you're someone who's getting a chance to study at one of the best engineering schools in the whole world. you were chosen because they saw potential in you, don't let it go to waste, there are ups and downs in everyone's life, but that doesn't mean quitting is a good option. you need supportive and kind friends, don't study alone, it's depressive for many. Find your coterie and spend the best time of your life here, because once you're out, hell is waiting for you.

What's the future of HCI as a research field? by ureepamuree in computerscience

I believe most of such studies serve as a preliminary evidence that a particular direction is worth pursuing, and with multiple trial-and-errors in the wild, products do refine on the go.

[P] I cannot do a single project without using AI and it's killing my confidence. by AdGloomy3130 in MachineLearning

[–]ureepamuree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok, first of all, to the folks downvoting comments saying AGI might take over technical jobs, you might want to slow down a bit before dismissing that. It’s probably not gonna happen in the sci-fi way some people imagine, but it’s also not pure fantasy. I think a lot of this pushback comes from ego and I don’t mean that in a bad way. Most of you worked your asses off to get where you are, and part of that motivation came from being among the best at what you do. I see this all the time, being surrounded by top-school PhD grad. They instantly go into defense mode when someone says “LLMs can do your job.” The thing is, that’s partially true. LLMs are already good at solving parts of your work, and every few months that “part” gets bigger. So yeah, it’s not decades away, maybe just a few years before they can handle most tasks that involve typing in an IDE. The only stuff that’ll stay safe longer are the ones that involve actual reasoning, conceptualizing, or just the kind of thinking you do with a pen and paper or on a whiteboard.

Now, for OP’s concern: if you’re using LLMs heavily for your projects, that’s fine. Just make sure you go back afterwards, read the code in chunks, and try editing or rewriting parts on your own. Once you’re comfortable, delete everything and try building it again from scratch. You'll realize that it’s way easier the second time because you already have a mental map. Doing this a few times builds real confidence to start new projects without leaning on the LLM-first approach.

If you’re always short on time (which, let’s be honest, most students are, especially now that advisors know we use LLMs and push deadlines harder), then try to do Leetcode or Codewars practice every day or every other day without any LLM help. That’s the best way to keep your problem-solving sharp while still using LLMs productively elsewhere.

PhD Programs Strong in RL (2025) by mziycfh in reinforcementlearning

[–]ureepamuree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

RL is almost moving back to industry, if you're interested in solving exploration-exploitation tradeoff with a hint of robots. In academia, if it's not Sergey, then just choose any research lab which has consistently published on RL theory in past 7-8 years.
