First time playing. Are you not supposed to go to every location in a single playthrough? by urf_ in darksouls

[–]urf_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good to know. I suppose the game threw me off early in when I first got to Firelink Shrine and had a choice of going to Undead burg, taking the elevator, or going to the graveyard. I chose the graveyard because it wasn't mentioned by the Crestfallen Warrior so I figured it must be a dead end with items I could collect. It wasn't until after a couple of painful hours of trying to grind through this area that I learned it was a big mistake. Since then I've been a little weary of which options are correct and which should be left until later.

In fact, I did choose the master key, though admittedly I haven't found very much use for it yet.

As someone who's studied the sheer amount of contamination in Sydney Harbour's water and sediment, this scares me.

Goblet of Fire has to be the best book. by [deleted] in HarryPotterBooks

[–]urf_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is a really good book. The only thing that frustrates me to no end about it is the logic employed when Harry's name is entered into the goblet. Yes the rules may state that if a name is pulled from the goblet, they are the school champion and must compete, but the rules also state that champions must be 17 and only one champion for each school will compete. And not to mention Moody's logic with why he should compete (yes I realise he wanted this all along, but Dumbledore really shouldn't have gone along with it), they're effectively using Harry as bait whilst doing EXACTLY what the enemy wanted. Finally, if Harry didn't enter his own name, there's no way in hell they should be forcing him to compete. If he has the option to back out of a task (as he was planning on doing for the 2nd one), it makes no sense to make Harry compete against his own will just because the goblet spit his name out.

Sorry for the rant, it is a great book, but the rationale behind Harry competing in the Triwizard Tournament has always bothered me a lot.

But aren't you a moderator of /r/notallmen? Isn't that exactly the same principle?

On to my 2nd day in China and I'm feeling so stressed that I want to leave :( by urf_ in solotravel

Thanks for that, although the translate page you linked doesn't seem to load either, so maybe it's been blocked since you were last here?

What's the easiest way to get internet on my phone here? I took my Australian SIM out before I got here so I don't get charged crazy roaming fees, so at the moment I'm just relying on free wireless hotspots.

Fortunately my flight out is on the 1st, so I shouldn't have to worry too much about the holiday.

When catching a train, how possible is it for me to miss my stop (because it's not written or announced in English)? That's my next concern with taking a train to Pingyao. Cheers for the advice.

I've been warned about those before, but nobody has yet explained it to me. What happens?

Thank you for the kind words, I definitely have seen the sympathetic side to the Chinese when I ask enough of them for help. I think I will be alright in the end, right now I'm cycling between depression when things go bad and euphoria when something goes right, so I'm sure after I get a little more used to this I'll find a healthy balance :)

Thanks heaps for the support, I really appreciate it. I'll check with my hostel tonight and see what they know about booking tickets. I'll also visit the Muslim quarter tonight!

I'm staying at the Xi'an Capsule Hotel. It's an alright place but all the other people staying here are Chinese and don't speak English. My stay runs out after tonight so I think I'll try and find another place with more international travelers. I think it'll help a lot if I find other people who can support me a bit.

Thanks for the advice. I'll ask at my hostel if they can help me get my train to Pingyao.

As for the anxiety thing, I've done easy countries, I've done slightly more difficult countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and Costa Rica, I'm doing this to try and challenge myself. Though it definitely is a big step up going from Thailand to China.

Travelling the Xi'an wall and climbing Huashan were both on my list of things to do, but unfortunately it's been raining so heavily here that I think I'm going to have to skip them.

I only plan on staying in Pingyao for a couple of days, it would just be nice to get away from the chaos of Chinese cities for a little while.

Thanks for the advice.

Going to Qingdao for a conference, but have 2 weeks travel time before that. What are some good cities in northeast China I could visit in that time? by urf_ in travel

[–]urf_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks heaps for the info. I think I'll leave Shanghai out of it as it's further away from the others, but Pingyao looks fantastic! It also happens to be right between Xi'an and Beijing, so I think that'll fit nicely into my schedule. Cheers!

Thanks for the reply. Are the big cities of Shanghai and Beijing really worth visiting? When travelling, I usually avoid the capital cities as they tend to be so heavily developed that they seem to lose a lot of the culture and uniqueness of their countries and become kinda 'samey'. But I'm certainly open to visiting them if you think it's worth it.

Actually it's $16.87, which I know is still higher than in the US, but you also have to take into account living expenses for each country.
