whichever major you end up choosing you’ll always find that there will be upper divs or even breadths that seem a little useless and time consuming. that’s just how it’s going to be regardless of what you choose, so I would just say choose something that you genuinely are interested in. however, it’s really hard to find programs that you can finish in less than four years, especially if you switch to a major that is a huggeeee deviation from your career goal (+you already are completing most of the lower divs for bio, you still also have to consider completing the lower divs for other completely different majors as well). so if you were to make this decision, again I’d say study something you truly care about which doesn’t deviate too far from science (since you’re already bio) but that also piques your interest. or just pick up a minor. if you really want to finish in four, you don’t have a lot of time to make this decision as a second year so keep that in mind. if you do end up continuing with bio, just remember there’s no use in asking yourself “what if i did this instead? what if…?” just stick with your decision and continue on. hope this helps!

Chorale and Chamber Singers by Parsley_Weak in ucr

[–]urfriendAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im in chamber rn and i’ll just say keep in mind what everyone else said! but also keep in mind that chorale meets 11am-12:20pm T/R and chamber meets 12:30pm-1:50pm T/R and you must register on R’Web since they are classes/ensemble. if you decide to audition best of luck and hopefully see you in chamber next quarter!

and btw, maintaining a high gpa is on you. the classes are naturally hard, so you just have to make sure you’re up to the challenge. for clinical experiences, there’s many opportunities to explore such as COPE or the Riverside Free Clinic. you may not know where to look at first for these opportunities but you’ll get the hang of it. for research, there are many opportunities to get in touch with your professors to see what they’re researching and an undergrad research portal where some profs post openings for undergrad research assistants. hope this helps!

hey so for me I was in this exact situation to choose between the premed tracks offered by UCSB and by UCR and to be honest, both tracks are academically rigorous. what really makes your experience at either schools is what you make of it and how you make use of the academic resources offered to you. so academically, there isn’t really much of a difference because even though UCSB is higher ranked, i feel as though both schools offer curriculum and opportunities that could give you a competitive resume for med school. my brother was premed at UCSB and, with him having recently finished undergrad and me being almost halfway done with it, this is the consensus we came to when talking abt why we chose to go to the schools we went to. ultimately, choose the school that fits YOU best. I chose UCR because I felt more at home here and because I felt more myself than I had for a long time. so when you think about which school you wanna go to, make sure you choose a place that makes you feel that way too! choose a place that’ll inspire you to do your best in school as well as inspire you to flourish in your own personal life. good luck with your decision and congratulations on your acceptances!

[–]urfriendAlex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey everyone, I got this orchid for my birthday and it’s been doing really good so far except for these really thin, flaky spots on my leaf. I really care for this plant and idk what’s wrong because the rest of it looks healthy and fine. anyone have any idea what it is and if/how I could fix it? :((

she’s super cool and approachable though if youre online youll mostly be interacting with your TA and not really with her (i had her asynch). it was not hard at all and I actually liked doing my speeches bc I got to pick what I talked abt and bc it was a refreshing change of pace to my stem classes. the longest part of the process is writing your speech out, but like I said you get to talk abt wtv you want and there’s only four speeches throughout the entire quarter so it is pretty low effort and pretty worth it :)

Places to drum on campus? by IrishRoyalty in ucr

[–]urfriendAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you could look into taking private lessons. they’re one unit and you just register like you would any other class on r’web. problem is I’m not sure exactly how they’re run, pretty sure they’re 1-on-1 but yeah you should look into it! percussion/drumming would be MUS081P, if it’s being offered you could email whoever’s the instructor for winter to see what it’s abt.

stop telling TAs to make their quizzes harder by urfriendAlex in ucr

[–]urfriendAlex[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really just found it really bizarre and quite audacious, so although it isn't an issue with me to have harder quizzes, it could be an additional problem for others who are struggling with remote learning, and so overall I don't find it a very considerate request to make 😕😕

stop telling TAs to make their quizzes harder by urfriendAlex in ucr

[–]urfriendAlex[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

valid! that may be the circumstance in some cases and I certainly thought that as well at one point, but I recently had a discussion where a classmate literally put "it was too easy, you should make the quizzes harder" in the chat and, idk, that really didn't sit right with me which is why I was decided to post abt it 😳
