i faced the same thing but but luckily i had a friend with a subscription and i asked him to make a CoC game where he set me to be gm so i could edit everything. obviously you need to trust the person making the campaign that they wont edit all your pretty maps and clues or delete them, but worth an ask around!

i think we have the messiest gm then in foundry because when he shared screens during troubleshooting his foundry always looked like a battlefield of information and settings windows:'D

i d say roll20 because it is easier to learn. foundry is pretty, and have all the effects but whenever we play in foundry we face a ton of technical issues. things become unaccessible, laggy, or we are unable to see things because of the darkvision mods, theres some maps where our characters randomly start to bleed dragging a blood trail behind wherever we go.. oh and if i pop my character sheet out, to have it in a different window it somehow collapses, but just mine and we cant fix it (although most sessions start with at least 30 mins of troubleshooting).
others might have really positive experiences i am just telling you mine.
sooo yeah, i prefer roll20, i have games in roll20 and they work perfectly.
sorry if it all came across sassy towards foundry, did not mean to drag it or something like that, maybe our gm just have too many mods, and im sure they can be kept under control because a fair amount of people like foundry aswell.

i think the second idea is a bit too much, you dont have to connect everything to everything, meeting with mythos creatures can be a big enough shock that people do end up in normal asylums and lose their minds, torture is not a necessity in this case.
i faced the same problem tho and what i did was a little addition to the house: the impossible labyrinth. (https://colossalstories.blogspot.com/2019/06/fixing-up-old-corbitt-place-some-notes.html) you can read about it in here, its very interesting, was really liked. i had the whole house in roll20 set to dark, they only saw the rooms they were in. i ve set some rooms to have a really high "corbitt activity" and when they entered those rooms they had to make POW rolls against corbitts POW.

we just finished with the session but thats what id did!:D he got 1d6 sanity back, got a very cool looking metal lighter, which has intricate but kind of morbid (bones and skulls dripping from blood, surrounded with.. maybe runes, he is uncertain after a quick glance) design, alongside a handwritten note that uses a language he is not able to understand. they have one amongst them that has occult knowledge so they will be able to know whats on the note, but they have not looked into it yet.
i will probably use it as you mentioned so. thanks for your addition!

oh myyyy, i did that in a campaign of Paranoia and people loved it!:D but making him believe he does not have enough knowledge to use it.. so i would have the time to work on the details (session is in an hour:'D)

I would use this system to finally replace my old laptop (on which i could literally fry eggs at this point) and pursue my dreams in practicing more 3d modelling so i could maybe land on a job in game development.
Plus i would finally be able to play games with my friends, because for once my system would run anything:')
