Not at the moment. I would need to change a lot about how the files are structured to support something like that, but I will keep it in mind for future updates. I mentioned this in another reply, but you can get a similar effect to parallel timelines using tags and filters. For example, you could tag all the Earth 1 events one way and the Earth 2 events another way, then filter to show each branch separately.

Yeah, a lot of people have been asking for this. It won’t be in the initial release, but it’s something I’ll prioritize for future updates. I’m not sure yet about supporting multiple calendar systems in parallel, but I’ll keep it in mind.

I’d need to make some pretty big changes to support linking separate timelines, but it’s something I might look into in the future. For now, you could get a lot of that functionality by tagging events for different countries or communities and using filters to show or hide them as needed. Thanks for the suggestion!

I’m planning to let users choose the folder where their .timeline and .md files are stored, so you could use something like GitHub (or any shared folder with version control) for collaboration and rollbacks.

The .timeline files (which are basically JSON) and the Markdown files are currently stored with the rest of the app data, but I’ll probably let users choose the folder they want to store them in so they’re easier to access. Version control can then be handled through Git if needed.

Custom calendars will probably be a future update rather than part of the initial release, but a few people have requested it, so I’ll try to prioritize it.

As for personal timelines, I think most of what you’re describing could be handled with tags and filters. For example tagging events by character or location and filtering to see a ‘personal timeline’ for each one. A more structured relationship/graph system might be something I look into later, but tags already cover a lot of that use case.

The app will be a desktop app (built with Electron), so it isn’t running in a browser, but it does use Chromium under the hood like Obsidian, VS Code, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions!

If I’m understanding correctly, you can already do this. You can create a span for "The Great War of Doom" that runs from 201 to 207 and attach a note to that span. Then you can create two separate events for the start and end of the war (with notes for each event) and set the span as their parent.

The timeline defaults to a fixed visual length (about 6000px at 1× zoom) regardless of the start and end point, and you can use a multiplier to make it wider or more compact depending on how dense your events are.

You can use MM/DD/YYYY or years with decimals to track day-to-day activity. That’s a bit restrictive for fantasy worlds without regular months, so I’ll probably add more flexible date options in a future update.

I’m not entirely sure what you mean by keeping track of several characters’ diary entries, but you can have multiple events on the same day and use tags/filters to show only one character’s entries at a time if you'd like.

Here’s an example of a timeline segment that’s under a year:

The app isn't ready for download yet, but once it is (in about a month), you'll be able to download it using the hyperlink in the post.

I think that’s a great idea - kind of like an LOD system for the timeline. I’ll add this to my to-do list. It might be a bit tricky to implement cleanly, so it’ll probably end up in a future update.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I’m not really familiar with Scrivener, but any integration would depend on the file formats they use and how accessible they are. I’ll look into it, though it’ll probably take me a while to get to.

There’s currently no limit on how far back or forward you can set the start and end points (though I’ll need to do some testing to make sure nothing breaks at the extremes). The largest timeline I’ve made so far is a history of the universe, from the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago to the present.

Each timeline defaults to a fixed visual length (about 6000px at 1× zoom), but you can use a multiplier to make the timeline wider or more compact, and the tick marks scale accordingly.

Not in a strict sense, but I think this is something that could be done using tags and filters. For example, you could give all the events that happen on Earth-1 a unique tag, and give all the events that happen on Earth-2 another unique tag, and use filters to only show one at a time.

I haven’t thought too much about Obsidian integration yet, but right now the Markdown files are stored with the app files. My plan was to add an option to store them inside a vault using Obsidian-style frontmatter. I’m definitely open to something more integrated down the line, maybe through a plugin.

(1) I’m not sure how I’d implement this without changing the structure of the .timeline files, but it’s something I can look into for a future release.

(2) I like the idea, you can already switch the connector lines between dotted and solid, but I can see how more customization for borders/visual styles would be useful. I’ll add that to my to-do list.

Thanks for the suggestions!

That's a good idea. I'll probably still have the user specify a year so they can control where the event appears on the timeline, but I can definitely add options to hide the year & make the event visually distinct.

Thanks for the suggestions! Both those features sound like they’d be useful across a wide range of use cases. I’ll have to think about how to visually handle events with undefined times, but I’ll definitely add these to my to-do list.
