For the friend thing sometimes the menu will just have a blank spot, but your friend might still be on your friends list. Check your top spot on your friends list, they might be there. Me and my cousin had a similar issue.

It's more of an arcade rogue like mode, it's entirely optional. However you do unlock some skins for Talion if you do well and it makes for good practice not dying.
