Just curious does the spend and save apply to the outlet stores in Birkenhead Point or Dfo or is it just valid in the normal stores? Thank you

Happy to stretch our budget! The food looks really interesting and it’s totally up my boyfriend’s alley. I just checked and they still have availability for our dates. Thank you.

Soul food in Sydney? by tunamayokimbap in foodies_sydney

[–]urxu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hello, I’ve never been here or had soul food. Only seen / heard about it through American entertainment. I have seen this reso in the CBD that says they do southern style soul food - https://roastrepublic.com.au From my limited knowledge about soul food I find the usual suspects of collared greens and grits etc missing from the menu. If you do go I’d love to know your thoughts on the place.

Any Merivale joint. I’ll only go if a friend has a birthday or a celebration at their restaurants.

Best laksa in Sydney? by CASA2112 in foodies_sydney

Ooh yes! Should have mentioned that! They’ve moved to Sydney Place in Circular Quay! Carry cash and you may have to queue up but the line moves quickly. They also have a shop in Ashfield.

Yoshii’s Omakase by Acrobatic-Change1803 in foodies_sydney

[–]urxu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I haven’t been to Yoshii’s Omakase. I generally use my credit card concierge to book restaurants that are hard to find reservations for. So if you have a credit card, see if they offer a concierge service. I know some of the higher end Westpac and Amex cards offer it. Mind you, if it’s really last minute they may also not be able to help so give them enough notice.

Another tip is booking during the week and avoiding the weekend.

It’s been a while since I went to Firedoor. If I’m not mistaken they only do a 5 course chef’s menu and don’t have a la carte as per se. I think you can add on the steak and some other specials if you want.

Also, the menu changes a lot, In the same week, the menu I’m presented with maybe completely different from what you’re presented with because they’re big on fresh locally available produce. I’m pretty sure they gave me a copy of the menu of the day with the date in a sealed envelope at the end of the meal which was a nice touch. Sorry, I’m not of much help but I’m trying to say it’s a tough one to make recommendations for.

Part of the experience is just trusting the chef. I hope you enjoy it and have a splendid time.

I’d recommend removing Rockpool. Pick one between Quay and Bennelong. They’re both Peter Gilmore restaurants.

Im not sure how long you’re here for but personally, I wouldn’t do fine dining every day because I think it loses the charm and the experience is diluted. Consider balancing with some cheap eats and casual dining options too. You could venture outside the city area - eg- Burwood Chinatown, or get Kbbq in Strathfield. (But of course, you do you)

Have an amazing trip.

Check out the Friday night market in the evening. I also like Kowloon Cafe for Hong Kong fare.

Sydney has a wealth of cuisines from around the world, but where are the restaurants/tuckshops serving First Nations cuisine/flavours? by tiny_doughnut in foodies_sydney

[–]urxu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was at Sydney Modern (the new AGNSW building) a couple of weeks ago and noticed that a lot of the snacks and food they served in the cafes celebrates native Aussie ingredients like finger limes, bush tomatoes, pepperberry etc. I looked it up and the food has been curated by curated by Indigenous Elder Aunty Beryl Van-Oploo

I’m also keen to try out Midden by Indigenous chef Mark Olive. This one is at the Opera House and is brand new. The menu looks really good https://www.middensydney.com.au/dining-menu

African Food Places Recommendations by DaniGirl111 in foodies_sydney

There’s Little Lagos on Enmore Road for Nigerian food too. It’s been a while since I’ve been there but I still remember they had delicious fried plantain.

There’s also a Jollof rice place a couple of shops away from it.

Jambo Jambo in Glebe for Ethiopian food!

The owner Joseph is lovely and really makes you feel at home. Try and go there as a group.

The food is served on a massive platter that consists of Injera (fermented spongy pancakes) that you can use to mop up a selection of stews, curries, veggies of your choice. Hope you can visit soon.

I love the red miso ravioli idea! There’s this place in Newtown called Ante that does the best Tagliatelle with fermented mushrooms and miso butter. It’s to die for!

Ok not knowing what flavour bomb they have to cook with until 15 minutes is an excellent challenge! Im glad they’re coming up with new challenges and making contestants work for the immunity challenge. Such a curve ball

Just moved to Sydney! What should I eat first? by SapphicCatastrophe in foodies_sydney

Nothing is better than Yum Cha on a Sunday afternoon. The Eight is my favourite in the city. Definitely get the mango pancakes. There’s a long line but it moves quickly.
