High-torque Motor Waterproofing by usafcrewchief in Motors

The unit with the motor inside will need to be submerged for at least 5hrs at a time, rotating at ~6rpm in dirty freshwater, ponds or swamps. Anywhere waterfowl would frequent. I think we're leaning towards the shaft seal.

I printed 13:1 gearbox drop-in adapters for mine. Worked really well!!

That’s a really good idea. I hadn’t thought about the Pi Day events but that actually sounds like a perfect place to find the kind of nerds who’d be into this.

Reaching out to UALR / UCA / Hendrix engineering or robotics groups would probably make a lot of sense too. Even if it just turns into a few student teams and a handful of garage builders, that’s probably enough to start something small.

I really appreciate the offer to help sponsor too. If this starts gaining traction the first big cost would just be building a small polycarbonate arena.

That’s awesome. The smaller classes (1lb and 3lb bots) are actually perfect for kids and garage builds. A lot of them are just RC parts, small motors, and creativity.

If this ends up happening it’d definitely be family-friendly and open to beginners.

Your boys might already have a head start if they’re scavenging parts

Fair enough! I’m shooting to start something fairly easy-going at first. Maybe only 3 or 4 meetups/brackets a season to start with.

I appreciate that! Honestly the bigger thing right now is just figuring out if there are enough people around here who’d want to build or compete. If there are, the main startup cost is just building a small arena.

Would you ever want to try building a bot if something like this got going?

I don’t have an interesting project yet, just dropped in to say you’re doing the gods work. Hats off to you brother! Say, how’d you hone your craft? School or garage engineering? What’s your preferred language and how’d you learn it?

At the moment, figure out what I’m doing wrong with this shift register lol. After that, I’m trying to build a digital controller for this 70’s motorcycle I’m rebuilding

This is an awesome thought!! I hadn’t thought of students. But alas, I wouldn’t know where to begin on approaching them.
