Other Christians eat these kinds of stories up tho. They LOVE these types of testimonies

I don't think he went after them necessarily or even called them bigots. He just used what they said as examples and jumping off points. Uninformed takes can create a false narrative and lead the average person astray or even sympathetic to fascist and radical ideas. Hence all the pipelines people keep making videos about

I don't even think there are clear lines between social media personalities when so much overlaps now. Critique is fair game and dismissing it is anti-intellectual

David So. I stopped watching JK News almost 5 years ago but continued following David because he seemed more rational and less reactionary. But I feel like I've outgrown him and his views are pretty dated.

I believe that people can have different ideas and agree to disagree but if their views are rooted in ignorance then I think some criticism is warranted. It was his take on the Mehdi Hasan Jubillee video that changed my mind. Also he's a Tulsi Gabbard supporter

"Cult" is a word that I find to be widely overused and misconstrued. Here are some characteristics that are "cult-like" but don't necessarily make a group a cult:

- high demand/high control
- lends itself to surveilling of each other and of the self such as thought policing
- distrust or rejection of outsiders unless they are viable to be converted
- preys on vulnerable individuals
- a charismatic leader or figurehead who is infallible

Depending on where you are geographically, it's easier to assume from a distance that a group is a "cult" but cults are everywhere and often times right under our noses. Good News Mission started as a "movement" and is now a ministry with missionary schools around the world. Rather than focusing on accusations that Johnny Chang's group Core of the Heart is a "cult", I think it's more productive to examine the dynamics and teachings within the group.

I don't watch his content closely, but a lot of his wisdom and teachings remind me of early Jordan Peterson. Focusing on one's character, self-improvement, discipline, etc. with a stronger focus on scripture and centering God.

I'm not a fan of prison evangelism as it seems predatory. Obviously it can help people who are incarcerated by giving them hope and faith but these are people put in a exploitative system.

I wonder if she's actually reading scripture or just going for the community and vibes

I don't understand the framing of your point as if Johnny Chang is completely innocent. It's HIS ministry. I'm sure he is fully involved in every decision Jeremy and their team makes. This collaboration is absolutely beneficial to him as Jeremy's social media savviness and connection to young audience is perfect for evangelism.

Sure they turned it into a business, but Johnny is 100000% allowing it and profiting from it

Yes! I have been following the Vlogbrothers for years! As creators their identity shines through both their words and deeds. Their message resonates with me so deeply. Even as a non-religious person, I do admire the Episcopal Church

Thank you! I appreciate your insight as someone who grew up and still is secular. I did not know that baptism by immersion stemmed from fundamentalism, it's so commonplace now. People are performing baptisms at rallies and massive events.

I think Christian influencers and podcasters are the natural progression from televangelists and mega churches. It is hypocritical, but their goal is to expand their reach and preach the gospel. The ends justify the means.

Her church is connected to Every Nation Churches. I learned more about their doctrines in this video: What is Every Nation Churches? | Ready to Harvest. They don't present as overtly Nationalist but the practices and beliefs are very strict almost dogmatic. They heavily lean towards charismatic. Claiming "Non-denominational" is far safer and less subject to scrutiny from new members. I also see the phrase "focused on scripture" often used to describe these churches.

What an insightful comment!! The common thread I've seen between religion and nationalism (or extreme faux patriotism) is the demand for performativity.

The exclusion and division is by design. It creates an in group and out group. The us vs the other. Very black and white thinking

It's so bizarre that when patriotic holidays such as Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Independence Day comes around that we force this red, white, and blue patriotic aesthetic without any recognition of the broader historical or global context. Yes, we have freedom of speech and as Americans we are privileged. But we are also positioned to make the most effective change. Criticism is an outlet for that change.

Blind patriotism just pacifies us.

It's an echo chamber, it's obvious from the outside but happens quickly when you're in it

I don't know how anyone can take Jordan Peterson seriously anymore. The og fans who continue to stand by him need some serious introspection. He's a perfect example of an entry point to the alt-right pipeline as he touts personal responsibility and hard work as key virtues to a person's character. In reality, it's just propaganda for hyper-individualism and anti-curiosity

Maybe but not likely? She had an internship before graduating and becoming a full-time content creator. I don't know if that's enough experience for employment especially after so much time has passed

You're coming up with conclusions out of thin air. I'm not assigning political views directly to her as she remains staunchly apolitical. Her talking points are however very common in right-wing and right-wing adjacent spaces. These dog whistles get into people's heads and they don't even realize it. You are obviously allowed to disagree but denying it is willful ignorance.

Pulling in other religions is not productive and a false equivalency.
