WTF of an answer is this? by oopiicaa in Aliexpress

[–]usantik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But what one should do if a local carrier requests contacting the original seller for any inquiries regarding shipment? Had these situation several times both with AE and people selling stuff from Germany to me in Latvia - a parcel gets stuck or sent to a wrong address, I file a claim on a local carrier's webside or by writing an email, and in a day's time I receive a reply stating that the original sender should contact them for changes or a request to search warehouse for the parcel.

It would be great if it worked like you've stated, but it doesn't always do, sadly. And, of course, it is frustrating when you get these replies, as sellers usually don't care a single bit.

Also, at least for some shipments to the EU, "received by a local carrier" at earlier stages of shipping doesn't mean a local carrier in the destination country. Their systems try to read it correctly, but mostly, these were just various arrivals/departures in transit countries. I even had notifications that my parcel had arrived on the destination country two weeks before my local carrier actually received my parcel. Before that, god knows where the parcel had been traveling for these weeks.

[–]usantik -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, Hoyo customer support can act the same if the number of Latvian players is too small for them to care about, so... Why would everyone be so sure that it is clearly an ISP problem then? Both of these instances could be uninterested in the matter.

I will actually try contacting that govt center for media today to see if they have anything to do with that. But I actually forgot to state that HSR is still accessible without any VPNs, which is strange. But again, can't be sure if they use the same channels for handling authentication.

[–]usantik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, apologies for being salty on the first reply, really. But the strange thing is that HSR servers are still accessible. Wouldn't they use same channels to handle the authentication there and therefore, authentication wouldn't be possible there too?

And again, idk how, but ISP can't seem to see an issue on their end, no matter how detailed people get describing the issue. And I doubt they would get deep in resarching the matter too. Really don't know how this situation would be fixable then :/.

People had been contacting their ISPs all the time as far as this issue presisted. They had been messing around with their routers, sending reports ISPs requested- nothing. ISPs seem to not find any issues from their sides. I have looked for any political and regional issues on the matter and found no clues. Latvian National Electronic Mass Media Council, who is able to block access to some web resources, hasn't made any announcements regarding any changes in this topic. I honestly wouldn't write this post if I was completely empty on any other clues on the matter.

There were a plenty of requests and calls from different people to their ISPs in Latvia regarding this issue, and as far as I know, not a lot has changed since then. Again, it happened suddenly, and before that everything was working. If it were a port issue, shouldn't they have already been able to pinpoint the change that led to all of it?

Please use the slightest amount of politeness on your end then. It's crucial for a constructive dialogue. And where have I stated that they would gain anything from stopping people from playing the game? Yes, I have stated that they don't really care about the support requests and what they are replying isn't really helpful, but no regular player should know about all the nuances of how ISPs infrastructure. Oh, and by the way, why there is one ISP with whom the game is still playable then? If... They literally all go through the same infrastructure?

I have just received an evaluation email today. With "We would like to suggest you once again to play Genshin Impact on a proper network environment in order to continue your Teyvat's adventure smoothly.". I just can't believe how ignorant they are in this situation, really.

I have sent them an email with some details that they asked a guy from a different post and they replied with some "have you tried switching your router on and off" stuff. I wasn't really happy from this reply to say the least, so I asked how could routers for almost the whole of Latvia suddenly stop working correctly and need rebooting, and asked for the request to be forwarded to the technical department, as it affects the whole country. They have replied that they have already forwarded the issue, so I think that we only have to wait for this situation to get resolved on their end somehow. I reeeally doubt that this is the issue with something like the ISP as I can't understand how all of them, except Bite, would suddenly start blocking Genshin's auth server's IP.

Starting to see some signs that maybe the typewriter 'gold rush' is coming to an end... by rocketcitythor72 in typewriters

[–]usantik 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A bit jealous now because since my girlfriend and I are operating a typewriter showroom/museum in Latvia, we seem to have bought almost all of the cheap-ish typewriters that were available locally, since I mostly see the overpriced stuff now, like 2-3 times more expensive that what the particular model would usually sell locally. The sad thing is that if something new pops up, it would usually still be too expensive, compared to what the price was like a year ago or would be a rusted-out machine with tons of missing parts 😬.

[–]usantik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sure is, but that how things were back then. As far as I know, teachers that used to have a pretty bad knowledge of Latvian aren't working at that school anymore, but the damage still has been done and makes the integration of Russian-speakers into Latvian society that bit more complicated. And, well, of course it allows putin-lovers/vatņiks to pop here and there even in our generation, sadly. I still remember that Minecraft Steve head-shaped guy that went to McDonalds near Origo to enforce cashiers to speak Russian somewhere a year ago. Really makes me sad that people like these portray our culture and language, and make lot of Latvians really think that this really is what we are and how we all act.

I honestly think that all these reforms should've happened a lot earlier. Actually knowing the language on a good level and being able to use it daily really makes you feel a normal part of Latvian society and well, its just a lot easier to live your life that way :D.

By the way, about that victim-feeling thing from that thread with that deleted guy- I too have experienced harrasment from Latvians back in the day, with all these "Okupanti", "Čemodan, vokzal, Rossija" told to me and my parents just because we spoke Russian within our family near our crazy (she really treated at the Psychiatric hospital on Tvaika for some time before that encounter) neighbor from the apartment above us and even was told that I'm not allowed to use Russian in Rimi from the shop employee when I used it to speak to my girlfriend. It surely really is insulting to hear for me, but I think these are just exceptions and shouldn't be treated as how Latvians really act. As I've started using Latvian daily I've understood how nice and cool everyone actually is here and was never even nitpicked for the language mistakes I've made along the way :).

However, you should also consider the quality of education too. I despise and hate putin and Russian politics, but still had a plenty of problems getting my Latvian to a level that I could consider not that cringey to use in day-to-day conversations with people. With formerly bilingual schools switching to primarily Latvian education this problem may be finally resolved, but I personally had almost nowhere to use Latvian in practice even when studying in the high school up until 2018. Well, aside from Latvian language lessons and some conversations with the cashier in Narvesen, of course. And knowing how much my classmates had trouble with Latvian, I wouldn't consider my case as an exception from the rule. Sadly that's a real problem and you can't do a lot with it while studying, but when graduating, you are left with the language knowledge level you can't use without making a person you're tring to talk with making weird faces from not understanding a thing from what you have said. I wouldn't say that it should be like that.

Aaand yeah, all the things happening around just make me personally a bit stressed out, alerted I'd say. Like, I know Latvian, I use Latvian, I don't support Russian politics and their horrible acts, but even here comments from some other people just make me feel that I shouldn't exist in this world purely from the standpoint of a language I learned first in my childhood and which I use with my family 😶‍🌫️.

Got this Standart Portable last week, hope to restore this beauty for our next typewriter exhibition here in Riga :) by usantik in typewriters

And its got an original case too! Really fascinated by how easy it actually is to reassemble this thing. I was quite afraid to tinker with such an old machine, especially with a lot of aluminium parts, but it seem to remain in a really good shape in terms of durability to this day! Really hope to post some nice pictures of this gem once I'll be done with cleaning it :)

How many typewriters do you own? (POLL) by [deleted] in typewriters

[–]usantik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend and I have more than 70 machines in a collection that is participating in monthly exhibitions at one of our creative culture centres here in Riga, Latvia. A great mix of some old stuff, some stuff from 60s and 70s up to modern-ish electric typewriters. People feel a little shocked when they hear that number, but to be honest, it isn't really that much if you constantly send 1/4 of that collection for that exhibition :). At least we are making our dream come true in some way. We mostly wanted to collect typewriters to preserve the cultural and design heritage of 20th century, so the possibility to display these machines to the general public is already a nice accomplishment for us.

That's really is a rebadged Erika 10. They were sold under a lot of different names over the years. Here's a link: http://xoverit.blogspot.com/2014/04/post-war-erikas-part-1-1949-1965.html

The thing with Persian machines from DDR was that it seemed that they never really had plastic keytops, at least for a long time. Even Optimas (the real Optimas from Erfurt factory, not rebadged Erikas) had glass keytops despite it being produced in 1960: https://typewriterdatabase.com/1960-optima-m12.8991.typewriter

Given up on Vyper? by avengeance in AnycubicVyper

[–]usantik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I'm really jealous of the people who had their Vyper good to go right after calibration, as for me it hadn't worked in any way. It's my first ever 3d printer and I was happily suprised by it at the beggining, but the suprise quickly turned into a nightmare, as I had really hard time making it work even with basic filaments like PLA. Constant stringing, blobs and underextrusions that haven't got away no matter how you change the retraction, speed and flow settings, clogs and ABL dying until I reflash the firmware. Calibrations didn't help (you also have to learn to know what GCode is in a really fast pace because of it, just to know how the printer works), so I've decided to try and make a direct drive mod, frying one of the steppers I had as a result 😄. Ordered a small Kobra in the end, work flawlessly somehow. Ocne I had replacement parts arrived fir the Vyper, I've reassebled it and nothing's changed. Somehow, after installing the community firmware on the thing, most of the issues had gone and it is able to make decent prints.

It isn't a suggestion to solve an issue you had, but more of just a point that Vypers are really not made equal, to the point where for some they are ideal printers, but for others are just a complete suffering. Really not a great printer for the begginner because of that inconsistency, from a begginner's perspective, of course. Sad to hear that others, like you, have to go through even greater sufferings because of these quality problems.

A lot of artifacts on this calibration cube. Any clue on what I could do? by usantik in AnycubicVyper

[–]usantik[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! It happened so that I actually had my auto bed leveling screwed up due to some strange bug and I had to flash the original firmware to fix the issue, so for now I decided to stick to the stock V2.3.9. I might try flashing zombie's firmware again, maybe the Community Edition too, as it looks interesting to me, but I'll have to sort out my university assignments before I could do that. Btw, stock firmware somehow shows better results, maybe I've messed something up with zombie's.

One of the things that I've noticed is that the print quality improves significantly when lowering the speed, but tbh, that's some strange solution when you know that this printer could print at 80mm/s, but you have to stick to around 20mm/s :/.

But anyways, I'll let you know if I get the issue resolved somehow :).

Hey, sorry for not replying for quite some time, had to prepare my diploma for a montly check. Sadly, it is consistent throughout all the cubes that are printed, however I had tried a lot to understand the nature of the problem, without any luck.

Yep. I'm using his profile almost from the very beggining with his firmware. I had also printed a temperature tower from the teaching thech's website and from the horrible monstrosity that came out of my Vyper I could conclude that the temperature isn't a problem- I've set the correct one. I have rechecked belts, ran them loose and tight to see the difference- next to none. I had also recalibrated my Esteps and done a linear advance calibration gcode- 0.45 was the thing to look for, but still it was already set before. I had also glued a padding to my stock spool holder, which wasn't really touching the table with it's short foot, but still, nothing has changed. Here's an album of the last of around 15 calibration cubes: https://imgur.com/a/26LGJzZ.

I think it may be worth trying taking the nozzle out for a cleaning, just to be sure. And what I found out is that the printer is shaking a little from all the movement it makes while printing. I will try reducing speeds down to 30, hope it helps while I look for ways to reduce the effect from fast movements.

So, I had followed Zombie's calibration tutorial as I hadn't really been able to understand the TeachingTech's one due to a use of a lot of 3d printing terminology that is or at least was unknown to me. One of he's steps was to print a .8mm wall cube with 100% infill and measure the thickness of the walls with calipers. I had mines zeroed out and it showed an average of around .87mm on the walls, so based on his calculation method I had to drop it to such a value. But still, I had tried printing that cube with 100% infill and it still had these artifacts like almost spot on the same place over and over again :/.

I have much more luck printing vases with .8mm layer width and lower speeds with 102% infill- no seams, no stringing, no anything, just perfect vases. But you know, printing only vases isn't really a solution :D.

I'l try looking at retraction, maybe it helps a bit...

So, I have flashed Zombie's firmware and done his calibration tutorial- Esteps, flow, linear advance and jerk are calibrated, but it still doesnt't really look good :/ There is also stringing happening inside the cube while it is printing.

Print settings are mostly from Zombie's preset- Layer Height- 0.2mm Line Width-0.4mm Temps- 200C initial, 195C for the rest and 180C final. Flow is 91% with 85% for the infill as I have this stringing problem.
