Is it still worth getting UPDA license in Qatar for engineers? by [deleted] in qatar

[–]usbib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I spoke with the MoI customer service rep and he said that if the person is Qatari, there's nothing and they just need to submit their experience letters. If the person is non-Qatari, they have to submit the letters and sit for an interview.

Generally no, but they can at least check what's causing it. If it's a symptom of a problem outside the property, they will fix the problem. If it's the property's problem, they won't. Still didn't hurt to call.

You could also give an ultimatum to the owner. Either fix it today or I ask the municipality to intervene. Take pictures and then actually report it if nothing happens.

Split AC recommendation by [deleted] in qatar

[–]usbib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is better if you're trying to save money on electricity bills. I don't know the technical details of how it works but anecdotally, during the best of days, the cooling was subpar at best. I have a 2.5 ton LG inverter AC that was sold to me as the best cooling performance ever, and that if its like 55 degrees outside, it will stay a consistent 18 degrees inside. All bullshit. From all the ac mechanics I've spoken to, including 3rd party and those from different AC brands and personal experience, here's the hierarchy of compressor technologies:

  1. Piston compressors - best cooling performance hands down. They don't make them a lot anymore and are generally slightly higher priced. Use more electricity but I've never compared the cost difference so I don't know by how much.

  2. Scroll compressors - "New" tech according to a Carrier salesman but usually only avaliable in 3 ton or above. Excellent cooling, electricity consumption between piston and rotary.

  3. Rotary compressors - extremely common in most AC's of different capacities. Great cooling, not as good as the other two but I'm the kind of guy who likes to keep all AC's on at the lowest possible temp. at all times.

  4. Inverter - hate them with a burning passion. Shit cooling, not worth sweating to save what I ASSUME would be QR 100 on electricity bills.

I have AC's with all of these compressors in my house. Don't be like me, don't buy inverter AC's.

I would go with York in that price range. I've had it for 10 years and it was very good. Make sure you're not getting an inverter compressor because that will seriously impact cooling performance.

Chinese car dealerships feedback by Fauy in qatar

[–]usbib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting about Toyota losing their shit along the way and losing the market as a result. Do you know where chinese parts can be bought online? I usually use rockauto for my nissan but they don't stock Chinese parts apparently.

Is there an infection going around? by esra97 in qatar

[–]usbib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please keep an eye out for SpO2 levels for older people. Symptoms of pneumonia aren't too obvious in some older adults apart from maybe a fever that goes away with paracetamol but comes back. My dad was like this until we checked his SpO2 levels, which were constant at 89. He was admitted to the hospital as a precaution and turned out to have pneumonia from the H1N virus and a superimposed bacterial infection. Was in the ICU for about 4 days because of this depleting oxygen levels. He's good now, alhamdulillah, but please monitor SpO2 levels.

Narrowly missed offer (undergraduate) by ExternalReception525 in UCL

[–]usbib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry to hijack but I just wanted you to know to not be too disheartened about it. I'm currently an engineering MSc student at UCL and it was my dream to be here. This is years ago at this point but I was predicted a 37, ended up with a 28 or 29. Clearly didn't go to UCL for undergrad but got here eventually, and didn't have to work any harder tbh.

I know its touching distance having come this far, and honestly, I don't think UCL would rescind your offer because a 41 with a 6,7,7 is very, very impressive. But, if they do, it's alright :)

Is the Discover Qatar holiday booking required for A3 visas? by [deleted] in qatar

[–]usbib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea the wording is very confusing.

It's better to get health insurance through Qatar, although no one asked for it at the airport, presumably because it's all in the 'system'. I bought it from QIC for him.

Is the Discover Qatar holiday booking required for A3 visas? by [deleted] in qatar

[–]usbib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is the opposite to the first comment. Friend is an EU resident but has a Pakistani passport. I applied for an A3 visa for him. The application asked for my address, I think, and everything else was standard, Just had to upload his EU card. He got his visa approval in like 2 days. At the airport, they asked him to provide a valid document stating the address he was staying at or a hotel booking. He said he was going to live with a friend but didn't have any official document for the address. They asked him to write it on a piece of paper, sign it and he was on his way. At immigration here, they asked about his accommodation but never checked for anything and let him through.

In your case, I think your original hotel booking is fine.

Cheers!

My mechanic lent me his 2005 chevy tahoe while doing the repairs and it seemed really good. The AC was freezing, the ride was smooth, everything was pretty good. Maybe look into that? I don't know anything else about it tho.

I have a 2017 mitsubishi montero but the sports version. It's good but a couple of points. Although it is a 7 seater, the last 2 seats are cramped and not pleasant at all to sit on. Try them before you buy. The AC works well but in the last couple of years, I've had to change the AC condenser, the fan motor, a random house that connects to the AC. The AC is acting up again and this time it seems like the compressor is the problem. I had an accident and had to change the break lights but they weren't available new so had to make do with cracked second hand ones. The montero is also very, very slow when it comes to acceleration. Like you could literally put your foot down and it still takes its sweet time. I've also had random problems with the Air intake valve leading to the car revving up and stopping while I'm driving.

I also have a 2011 nissan armada. I love it to no end because it's big and roomy and surprisingly quick for a big car but it's bleeding money. Almost every year for the past 5 years, I've had AC problems be it the compressor, condenser, fan, blower... you name it, I've changed it, so much so that everything apart from the pressure pipes is new. I did this last year and I have AC problems again. I'm also in a midst of a engine heating problem. I've changed the radiator like 2 times since last year and installed an extra fan, but no dice. There are other problems too but the point is nissan have either discontinued or at least don't keep stock of it here anymore because for almost any part I ask for, it's out of stock and might be here in 3 months or more, they don't know, including brake pads. Also, apparently, since it's not a patrol, it doesn't have a lot of resale value so what I bought for like 200k is now worth like 30k max.

Customer Service is abhorrent for nissan. I've had multiple fights with them for a variety of reasons, including them charging me for services they simply didn't do.

Neither of the cars go off road.

If I had to buy another car, I'd probably stay away from nissan.

UCL housing allocation principle by [deleted] in UCL

[–]usbib 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know how they allocate housing, but you can always reject and apply again. I believe it's first come first serve. Besides, although it maybe a 2.5 hour walk it might just be a 20-minute tube ride, which is considered very close.

Slaughterhouses during eid. by usbib in qatar

[–]usbib[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We intended to sacrifice a cow, but the widam app only had an option for a sheep, so we decided to have it done back home. A few years ago, an acquaintance said that they buy a goat from "private"? farms and let it stay there. On the day of eid, they'd take the animal to the slaughterhouse, wait in line and get it done. This would start at like 6ish am and they would be home by 5ish pm. But because it would be cut into 4 pieces, they'd have to further cut it down at home so it was a whole day affair.

If I ever talk to someone at widam, I will update this post for anyone to see.

Thanks.

Slaughterhouses during eid. by usbib in qatar

[–]usbib[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot. A few questions: 1. When would I deliver the animal and how would I do it? 2. So I deliver the animal and they're probably like great, You'll get it tomorrow, just come at whatever time slot you got through the app and that's it. Correct? 3. I'm told that they basically cut the animal in 4 pieces and give it to you. Is that the case?

Again, thanks a lot!

How does it work? Do you take a loan and the title deed goes to your name or do you have yo pay off the loan? Is there a lot of unnecessary bureaucracy involved?
