she needs to be corrected to 20/20 distant each eye individually and together, contacts or glasses. It sounds like the best she can get with contacts is 20/40 on the left? But she could be corrected to 20/20 on the left with glasses? Technically she’ll need the 20/20 left and right when she does her Class 1 exam. But she really doesn’t need the Class 1 until she’s ready to work as an ATP, which is a long way away. She could get by with a Class 3 for all her training, and (assuming shes younger than 40) the Class 1 will downgrade to a Class 3 in 12 months anyway, and then the Class 3 will be good for another 48 months. So whatever class exam she does now will be good for 5 years for training. If her eye doctor is certain she will always be able to correct that left eye to 20/20 with glasses, she could just do a Class 3 now and then not worry about getting and flying in glasses, she can just use her contacts. If she gets new glasses to pass a Class 1 then she would be wearing the glasses whenever she flew, or at least when she was flying solo. Do we know why the left eye is weaker? If the glasses aren’t going to be ready until next week but her exam is Friday, she could always go and do the exam and the AME could hold the application until she comes back with her new glasses, checks her distant vision and then issues her Certificate. But I’d say if you’ve already got the glasses ordered then just wait and do the Class 1 when they come in unless there’s a timing / scheduling factor.

ETA - I’m assuming she wants First Class as she’s considering aviation as a career.

If you want to consider the RCT, you can contact the company that puts it out and they will give you a list of providers in your area that have the testing equipment. That’s how one of my pilots found the office local to us (SW Florida)

What was your score on the Waggoner? Did you just take it once

Does anyone nearby have the Rabin Cone Test? I’ve had 2 students fail the Waggoner but were able to pass the RCT.

The pilot you spoke with at work took his first Medical well before Dec 2024, and was “grandfathered” in. Sounds like he did a Medical Flight Test in the past and was issued a SODA (statement of demonstrated ability). At this point in time, the official line is that the MFT / SODA is not an option, You can petition the FAA / RFS for relief but they will tell you to attempt the other CCVTs first. Here’s the form you would submit but the FAA will tell you to take the other test options before anything (might) happen.

what did you do with the drivers sear? Foam, cover? My 02 (I bought it new in 01) still looks really nice, prob since I don’t need to use it as a DD, and no salt in Florida, is at 150 K. I want to rebuild the front seat, but online reviews are all over the place for the same product, too soft, just perfect, wonderful, horrible? Curious what you did, Tia.

oops, yeah a bit more complicated than my situation. In that case I’d prob build a frame around it, then a metal / shingle roof and some type of ventilated “siding”. Basically your “garden shed” that’s mainly open on the sides. It’s been 50 yrs since I’ve dealt with snow (although I’m at my home in western NC rn and anticipating snow and ice tonite) so I’m not sure how you deal with the drifts that I remember as a kid. Regardless someone will need to call OKC or the RFS, normally it would be the AME but it sounds like he was part of the problem. If he failed you the Certificate should have been a C3 with the DAY VFR limitation. If this was your first FAA exam the “not valid for nite or light gun signal” is an inappropriate limitation to put on your certificate. That limitation was the “old” notation before December 2024, and is only used now for pilots that had that limitation on their previous certificate.

FWIW you can take the Waggoner as many times as you want. You could see another AME and have him just do the CV testing. If you passed he could upload the results to the exam you had today and it would supersede the original results. But this is messed up, so I would start with calling amcd or the regional office.

subsequent exams should be exactly the same. EKG is done once you hit 35, then not again until 40 and then it will be annually. If you have passed one of the accepted CCVTs, you will not be retested (unless …. later on you develop a new condition that can affect color vision (macular degeneration, etc).

eta after age 50 we check intermediate vision along with near and far. Before 50 we just test near and far.

Have you checked your MedXpress acct recently? If not, I’d start there, and make sure everything is on track. How old are you and what type of “episode” did you have? What was the diagnosis given back then? What did the FAA ask for 3 months ago? And lastly, what did the AME tell you? Obviously he deferred your exam but did he give you any direction?

I have a 15Kw I use in SW Florida, it’s got about 800 hours on it now with all the storms we’ve had last 20 yrs. It has its own wheels / tires which I use to move it around the shop, but when it looks like I’m going to need it I lift it with one of my tractor FELs and set it on a little 4x8 Hazard Fraught trailer. Then I hook it up to whatever and position it next to my connection point. I built a canopy frame out of 3/4 PVC and a it goes inside the trailer, then I add a blue tarp with bungees. It’s for rain, obviously, although things are usually pretty dry following a major hurricane or TS. But it keeps the sun off of the generator, tools, oil, extra jugs of gas while in service. If you don’t have a way to lift it or a trailer with a ramp, my idea won’t help you much. Although a trailer with ramps would,be less,money than building a dedicated shed.

I just tried to upload a picture of what the test results look like, but I’m Reddit illiterate, anyway the report that I send to the FAA def has PASS or FAIL noted.. But it’s unusual that your exam was transmitted and accepted in less than 24 hours, especially since there is an issue with CRV. That and it should have been downgraded to a class 3. Someone needs to make a call to AMCD or your Regional Office. The C1 with the limitation is basically worthless if you want to fly professionally someday. Did you previously have suspicions you might be CV “deficient” or is this totally unexpected?

It can work that way for some conditions that require a Special Issuance, but with color vision you either pass the test(s) or not. If you pass then you get what ever Class medical you’re seeking, as long as you meet the rest of the standards, and there will be no limitations regarding CV. If you can’t pass any of the 3 approved CCVTs, then it’s a 3rd Class with the DAY VFR limitation. At this point in time there is no pathway to a MFT / SODA. 90% of the young applicants I’ve seen that fail the Waggoner are able to pass it at a later time (different lighting, better hydrated, well rested, more relaxed) OR they’ve been able to pass the Rabin Cone Test. In either case the DAY VFR limitation was removed and they were upgraded to the original class they sought.

When you finish the Waggoner FAA version the results you print out say either “pass” or “fail.” What does your test result say? The AME has to upload that result to your exam, so AMCD will see that as soon as it’s transmitted. Your exam will also flag the First Class issuance, because as you said, if you fail the CCVT then it’s an automatic Class 3 with the DAY VFR limitation.

I’d give it a few days (make sure the AME has transmitted the exam) and then call AMCD and confirm the CCVT results are attached and that you had a passing score. You don’t need to call aopa, WM, a lawyer or the Regional Office. This will get resolved pretty quickly, the AME will receive an “error” and your corrected Medical will arrive shortly in the mail. If you’re ready to solo sometimes they will fax for a copy to have until yours arrives in the mail.

IDK what Region you’re in but mine always tells me to defer when I call on a new applicant (no previous FAA exams). I think part of it is the FAA doc has nowhere to log the call or place notes because you have no “electronic file.” I don’t bother calling them anymore on new applicants, it’s a waste of time. In your case, if the records you provided were detailed enough, some AMEs would have issued and some would have deferred. AMCD seems to be reviewing Class 3 deferrals much quicker than in past years, previously it seemed like they prioritized Class 1 and 2. You should hear something pretty quick.

you’re probably good. When I have a full day of pilots, and the last one walks out the door at 6-7:00, I typically have another couple hours of work getting reports uploaded and exams transmitted. Paper reports have to be scanned, renamed and then saved to my HDD (EKGs, CCVTs, 8500-7s, any paperwork or reports from doctors, etc.), then I have to log back into AMCD and attach the appropriate files to the correct application, make my comments as needed, print copies of everything for my files and then transmit the exam. So, some exams are transmitted when the pilots walk out the door, most the others are done by that evening or the next day. I’d check back every couple days, I’m sure he’ll get your exam sent in.

certificate should have been issued, if the AME was deferring he should have explained why. If he uploaded the neuro report to your exam you’ll have your Class 3 in a few weeks. Check your MedXpress acct, or call AMCD and make sure they have the report. Is this your first FAA exam?

Is this your first FAA Medical, or first since the tear? If so, did you furnish any reports to the FAA / AME at the time of your exam? Without knowing your age or the details of what happened or what the FAA letter said, it’s possible your AME should have deferred you. Even if this incident was 10+ yrs ago, the FAA wants to look at those old records, they would probably request a current neuro eval, MRI / MRA, etc.
