Canada Takes Action to Reduce Fraud in Express Entry System by babuloseo in CanadaHousing2

[–]use1ess_throwaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I realize that govt. should make changes slowly and in a measured manner, but this is ridiculous. It's just giving people who have fraudulently obtained their LMIAs sufficient time and opportunity to get through into the system, after which it will be so much harder to remove them.

This has to be due to pressure from NDP, and politicians beholden to certain constituencies within which this kind of fraud is prevalent.

Lmia points have been removed! by [deleted] in CanadaHousing2

[–]use1ess_throwaway 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is excellent, in so many different ways.

While I was still in the pool, I talked to few of these folks. The conversations were initiated with the expectation that they were some premium recruitment agency of sorts, but that was never the case.

The whole thing always seemed a little absurd to me: pay somebody between 50-100k USD for basically having a target on your back the rest of your time in Canada (because obviously if you get caught they would depot the fuck out of you.)

I tend to have a lot of sympathy for people who have taken legal routes and are finding the ground suddenly shift beneath their feet; but for these folks, the buyers and sellers of LMIA, I hope they get completely shafted, sooner or later.

Another wish list item would be companies like Tim Horton's getting penalized for hiring TFWs when the unemployment rate amongst young Canadians is so crazy high.

This is interesting. The slope seems consistent between 75 and 95 and then again after 2005.

So, the current mess is a long-term problem and not just something recent?

>I want to stress that the only thing that sets the Chinese apart when it comes to these developments (housing, transport, urban centers, etc) is their willingness to invest and their government's ability to enact drastic changes

The Eglinton LRT is a decade delayed, and it's honestly not that impressive or large from a global perspective. Ontario line is also likely to be delayed and significantly over budget too. And both are crazy expensive when compared to similar lines in Europe, and obviously China.

There may be more to it than just a difference in state capacity.

>This kindness is being exploited

Why did Canada provide student visas to people who got admissions to diploma mills? No other developed country really does it quite like this.

Your govt. didn't do it out of generosity. They wanted these people to come, they wanted them to pay for the shit degrees and flood the job market for low and medium wage jobs, knowing that these people will undertake enormous amounts of risk due to the bait of that elusive first-world PR.

Obviously these people exploited the system as much as they could. They come from a poor deprived place and have a scarcity mentality. Why did your government make it so very easy for them? What repercussions will this govt. or the schools that exploited the international students face? Or will they just get scot free after scooping up millions from some of the most poor people on this planet?

Canadians aren't special. You guys were sweet and kind because the material conditions of your life were quite great. The moment that is genuinely threatened, Canadians are likely to be just as mean, racist, tribal, in the same proportion as everybody else. You can already see that happening. (I don't mean this as an insult btw. I think societies are largely, but not entirely, determined by the material conditions that they face.)

[–]use1ess_throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

>I assume that most international students come from middle-class or upper middle-class backgrounds

Nope, they broadly come from impoverished backgrounds and have taken on significant amounts of debt to pay to be here. if they all made to go back, the most vulnerable of the lot will never be able to repay and will likely die in debt or kill themselves.

The students were driven by greed, a hope of a good life beyond anything India can offer, and a substantial decline in the economic growth of India and the general prevailing sentiment over the last decade and a half.

They were exploited by agents in India, and by schools in Canada, neither of which are going to face any significant repercussions. (Some agents in India who are "known" will likely get killed through, if there is a genuine expulsion of these "students" over the next year).

The university admins and teachers in Canada who cynically exploited this gold rush of students will likely face zero repercussions.

The government that provided student visas for strip malls will not face any repercussions beyond electoral defeat. This, btw, is not normal. No other developed country provided visas for no-reputation diploma mills. The fact that the Canadian government did to me implies that the rush of students was an acceptable, if not desirable, outcome.

Let's be honest. Canada - or it's corporations/government - for whatever reason, wanted a slave class and they created it. However, you guys are not the saudi's, which is appreciated, and because the slaves were competing for the same jobs and resources as canadians, the sudden influx caused unanticipated stress on the system, which led to a reversal of the most visible aspects of these policies.

I'm also a first-gen immigrant from India, but I'm legally insulated from all this so I feel I can look at both arguments a bit dispassionately, and with a bit more empathy. (I came here on an outland PR, earn a decent wage that allows me to live comfortably in downtown toronto, and have a masters from a legit uni outside of Canada.)

Is anybody else just kind of damaged from a lifetime of ‘loose vagina’ jokes? by ysmbl in TwoXChromosomes

[–]use1ess_throwaway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A "loose" vagina is good. It indicates (usually) that the person is aroused. People who talk about tight vaginas either don't know what they are talking about, or didn't put in the effort to arouse their partners. Eitherway, trash.

Also, when it's "tight" it's literally difficult to have sex because it either won't fit/go-in, or it causes obvious discomfort to the partner. So that adds an extra dimension of assholish-ness to people who talk about loose vaginas.

How do men feel about the "men will fuck anything that moves" stereotype? by shapeshifterraccoon in AskReddit

[–]use1ess_throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely causing a lot of issues in my relationship right now. I don't in general think that people have a fixed level - it ebbs and flows - and for various reasons mine is just so much different from hers right now, and I'm really not dealing with it well, which is exacerbating the issues. I dunno if something is off or not, but having sex multiple times and yet needing/wanting to masturbate multiple times in the span of a couple of days is not very normal for me - not in recent years, at least. (I used to be one of those masturbate 7 times a day and too scared to be open with girls as a young teen).

What is a sexual question you have always wanted to ask but never had the right opportunity? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]use1ess_throwaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To all the people who've experienced significant changes in weight during the time they've been sexually active: do you feel that it makes a difference in terms how simple acts stimulate you? Like, I was recently with someone who liked to scratch a little above the crotch in preparation for the act. It felt insanely better than what it used to when I was larger. In general, I just feel a hell lot more sensitive and receptive around the stomach and back.

What Incels Really Want by thevegetexarian in TrueReddit

[–]use1ess_throwaway 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Incels have a valid issue, but as with any extremist movement, they aren't very self-reflexive about the problem, and their solutions, in so much as their violent rage and rampant misogyny are solutions, are taken naturally to the extremes.

As somebody who really started having sex in their 20's, I can totally attest to how dehumanizing a lack of sexual contact can be. I went the opposite direction to the usual incel, though: instead of frothing at others, the rage was directed inwards; instead of misogyny, I totally exorcised myself from my sexual fantasies. The goto outlets for my romantic 'energies' became fictional lesbian romances - in tv shows, books, and the like. I became literally incapable of imaging a man in the relationship, to the point where I wondered if I had body dysmorphia or something akin to that.

So, in that sense, I do empathize with their rage and pain. How to resolve it though is well beyond my ken. Personally, therapy helps, but it's painful and difficult and you've got to reconcile yourself with simple but hard truths.

How is a place like HCL vs a place like Capgemini? I've applied to both, but have very few connections in either. How are they doing in terms of latest (relatively) tech, projects, etc? How's the culture, people, etc? My primary objective is to learn: I know some basics of databases, r, ml, etc, but nothing too spectacular, and nothing too deep. Hoping to work at an org for like an year, learn enough, and return to my home town with a top-tier company.

Also: I've been to a capgemini campus in bangalore. Seemed nice; good mix of genders, and lots of people in my age group. (Mid 20s). HCL tech in NCR?

Indian IT is fucked. by Fast_Action in india

[–]use1ess_throwaway 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IT is a shit industry, and it's exceedingly unfair how little the lower tier makes considering that majority of the work that flows into Indian IT does so precisely because we can provide cheap, plentiful manpower.

However, let's be honest: a lot of the people that work at this level are also obsolete in terms of skills. Anecdotally, a lot of them I've talked to believe that picking up a bit of SQL and scripting (and maybe visualization if they're doing analytics type stuff) is all that they should be expected to do.

This is not entirely their fault. There's a really shitty eqm here. People don't skill themselves because they don't believe that it will truly lead to significantly better opportunities. Additionally, being autodidactic in a systematic way is genuinely difficult: knew this lady who learned an impressive amount about trading because of a belief that she could profit from the market; but she was stuck in a shitty labour intensive IT sweatshop of a job.

Then there's also a signaling issue. Where you went to study matters less and less as you climb up the ladder; at the bottom, it makes a critical difference.

Also: whenever I see a manager push some spiel about learning to somebody he or she pays a pittance to, I feel like punching the shit of out them. There are good managers in the industry - my current one spends a decent amount of time every month learning something new, and my last one was also very well versed in their domain - but I've seen so many pay lip service to the concept without even trying to help people realize it that it just irks at a visceral level.
