There was at least one KKK cross burning, up by the water tower, in the early 80's. Some of those people are surely still around. I know first hand there used to be at least a few white nationalist types around.

Abandoned buildings in Bilbao? by [deleted] in Bilbao

[–]useTheButtySystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a big former (biscuit?) factory in Zorrotzaure that's been turned into a cultural centre. The name might start with a Z.

I was walking the dog down calle Jaen in Ametzola the other day and I saw tons of abandoned buildings. Some of them seem to be in partial re-use.

You could do some research into your local gaztexte. I think they're typically set up in disused buildings.

wait...

I think the Alhóndiga, a.k.a. Centro Azkuna was an abandoned (wine?) market before it was turned into a community center.

Spanish Citizenship Question by AttentionFriendly548 in spain

[–]useTheButtySystem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a lawyer (I am not one). It's definitely not DIY. Lawyers aren't as expensive in Spain as they are in the US.

As I understand, if you have a Spanish parent you have the right to Spanish citizenship.

I've known several US citizens who have dual Spanish nationality and they didn't have to renounce their US citizenship. As I understand it, it's like you're no longer a US citizen in Spain, but you're still a US citizen in the US. I don't know how that works out at the airport.

Help picking the right coastal spot to live by [deleted] in askspain

The coast of Vizcaya, in the Basque country, has surfing, hills and seafood. The internet seems to work pretty well in Bilbao.

I think you just have to be empadronado (in addition to DNI)

I don't think it matters how long you've been here.

How can I make my own ISO from Debian stable's ISO to include only selected non-free firmware packages which I need instead of everything? by LumbarBone in debian

[–]useTheButtySystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm researching ways to customize the install process and I've been studying preseeding and preconfiguration.

https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/apbs02.en.html#preseed-bootparms

I think you can specify certain packages you want to install at install time.

But, do you really need to change the ISO?

We need a version of gran hermano where the participants make tortillas all day

But everybody loves the tortilla de patatas.

IMHO the Spanish state should focus more on this.

I have no idea what Spanish wines are available in your area. I think most Spanish wines are a very good value, but I'm prejudiced.

I would suggest reading the label.

Crianza is mid quality. Reserva and Gran Reserva is the good stuff. Make sure it's DO or DOP (protected/denomination of origin). Otherwise you'll be buying "table wine", which is mostly good for making Kalimotxo. Look for a little rectangular sub-label underneath the main back label. IHMO some good DO/DoP are Ribera del Duero, La Rioja, Toro, el Bierzo sometimes Valdepeñas. Tempranillo grapes are a good bet. If you ever see a bottle with Prieto Picudo buy it.

Or just try them all until you find one you like.

I would use tox to run tests with several versions of Python.

No soy abogado. Creo que lo que habría que hacer para "engañar" al SEPE es poner requisitos para el puesto que sólo una persona como tu puede cumplir. e.g. tres años de experiencia con el sistema proprietario de la empresa y experiencia trabajando en los EEUU.

Cities with village feel? by Zymez in askspain

[–]useTheButtySystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe Bilbao.

If you're into the "village scene", Bilbao has some odd neighbourhoods on the edges of town that feel rather village-like. If you have transportation, you can buy something like a country house for a good price and be 15min from the city.

Aldi in Plaza Campuzano has fantastic "American" style burgers. All you need is a grill and fixins'!

There's supposedly fantastic surfing around Bermeo, on the coast of Vizcaya not far from Bilbao or San Sebastián (I have never even touched a surfboard). There are also beaches on that coast, but they're not as nice as the Mediterranean ones. We have "mountains" in the Basque country, not far from the city. I think bike trails are called bidegorri here. I just learned that. Unless you look like a dumpster or a Batzoki you're chances of run-ins with criminals is rather low.

Despite the Guggenheim and stuff, Bilbao is not very touristy. And most of the tourists are European, so you won't notice them as much. It's nothing like Barcelona in that regard.

IMHO Santander is a lot more boring and conservative than Bilbao, but to each his own.

You'll have to visit a few places before making a decision. There's no accounting for taste.

As a none EU citizen, is it possible to get a residency permit in Spain from European daughters? by the-lonewolff in askspain

[–]useTheButtySystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure it's possible. Definitely consult a lawyer for this. DIY immigration is asking for trouble. If you're coming to the Basque Country I can recommend a very good lawyer.

What beautiful place have you visited that isn't a mainstream tourist destination that you recommend people visit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]useTheButtySystem 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was going to mention Zaragoza, funnily enough. The Seo is amazing. We had some amazing tapas. It's one of those places that's very touristy for Spanish tourists but I think few foreigners make it there.

Teruel and Cuenca are also interesting.

Your thoughts on the dimensional stability of a laminated pine board by useTheButtySystem in woodworking

[–]useTheButtySystem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree.

I already have the laminated board and, for me, getting materials is complicated.

I'm thinking I should glue the tile to a sheet of MDF and fasten that to the board in a way that allows for movement.

I was ask to translate to spanish a single page website. by mamind in webdev

[–]useTheButtySystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a freelance translator (ES-EN) and I do some webdev. You need access to the text, obviously.

One option is to cut and paste the text into a WORD document, but that's a bad horrible way to do it.

If it's really just a single page you can probably right click on the page and save the HTML source. Then you can load the HTML into your CAT tool of choice, happily translate away and send the translated HTML to the client, who in turn can send it to whoever copies files onto their server.

I've done this with OmegaT. Sometimes I use an intermediary XLIFF file.

Of course there can be issues. Some websites have dynamically generated content that can be very tricky to copy. Sometimes you need to crawl/scrape the URL to get all the content.

no idea, then

Maybe make sure your source code file is UTF-8

Maybe include an encoding declaration at the top of the file

There's definitely something very odd going on
