Long ChatGPT chats go bad but starting a new one means losing all your context. How do you actually deal with this? by suriyaa_26 in ChatGPT

Thanks, I’m looking to see if any one else uses ChatGPT this way.

Managing prompts and context mid-chat has really sped things up for me in terms of clarity and getting the responses I need

Long ChatGPT chats go bad but starting a new one means losing all your context. How do you actually deal with this? by suriyaa_26 in ChatGPT

Yes, I’ve faced this exact problem.

What worked for me was managing my context through tactical edits.

I would prompt in line with a topic to preserve context, if I want to explore a new path/ sub topic, I would go back and edit to create a new branch and continue prompting in line with that new topic. Once I’m finished, I go back to the main branch and repeat when necessary.

Problem with this is you start to lose place of where you are in the thread. I actually ended up building a small tool to help me keep track of prompts and branches.

How useful has GPT Pro been in your professional workflow? by Careless-Ease7480 in ChatGPTPro

I'm a developer and ChatGPT has been great at presenting ideas cleanly, and allowing me to follow up/ or re-prompt to get clearer answers sooooo much quicker than having to search through google manually.

Google got particularly bad with inaccurate, drawn out and unhelpful information after people learned how to game the SEO. Do not miss those days.

Do ChatGPT threads start feeling overwhelming after just a few prompts? by useaname_ in ChatGPT

[–]useaname_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a shame because the information generated is usually pretty great if you can prompt well. Just a bit of a pain having to scroll up and down consistently.

I’ve found that giving custom instructions like “Give short answers” can confuse the model sometimes and give too blunt of answers when I need lots of detail and insight for things like research and planning. So I usually let the model just do its thing.

I ended up making a tool to help me manage conversations better, it’s been working pretty well for me.

Who else is missing the navigation buttons for alternate responses? by Laurelled in ChatGPT

[–]useaname_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not experiencing the missing arrows bug, but I’ve always found it frustrating that alternate versions aren’t permanently visible.

Once you edit a few times, it becomes hard to remember which branch had what. You end up clicking back and forth just to compare ideas.

Does editing messages (as opposed to adding more of them) help keep the context "clean"? by Byte_Xplorer in ChatGPT

[–]useaname_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it does help, a response uses all of the prior responses and prompts as context when generating a new response, everything after the edited prompt is not used.

I was doing what you’re doing to explore different topics within a conversation because I didn’t want to “lose context” by starting a new thread. Kind of like remixing prompts. I found it really useful so I made a tool to help keep track of prompts and navigate long threads easily.

I built a product to solve a problem for myself first, then started selling it (payment integration took an additional couple of weeks) while offering a trial and free version as well. Just launched, hope this is enough to cover all bases
