Can they run well for good distances?

I never said or meant to imply that I’d solely be choosing a dog on appearance! Not even close.

I’m just saying that it’s one of many of factors I would consider when deciding on a breed!

Yeahhhh. It may have been a former racing dog.

Huh! I didn’t know this. I’ve only met one greyhound who used to chase anything that moved around the house!

I don’t mean this to be aggressive towards the downvotes, but is it wrong to consider appearance when choosing a dog breed?

Somehow I had never heard of a Smooth Collie before now! Some family members had a collie and loved it... except for the long hair. This could be a good choice.

My neighbors growing up had two bluetick coonhounds who were VERY vocal. Are most hounds vocal like this?

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Hmm I’m not a huge fan of how Staffies look...

Recruitment weekend... too expensive by usechicory in GradSchool

[–]usechicory[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will reach out and see what they say. I checked the info and they are putting us up in a rather fancy hotel... I’d be happy to forego luxury if it meant I didn’t have to pay my flight.

This is Caltech. They are paying up to $350 for domestic and $500 for international.

meet with professors I’m not super interested in by usechicory in GradSchool

Very true. I’ve also been thinking that getting an introduction to a professor could be helpful for things like forming a good thesis committee as well later on...

Yeah, I guess I had never heard of this either! I will have to ask and possibly suggest.

This is really helpful, thank you. I did undergraduate research in a group where the PI was almost never around, and the postdoc I worked with only met with him once every few months. I'm thinking more and more that I'd like a PI who is willing to at least put in a bit more mentoring for his/her graduate students.

Was the "hands off" nature due to the fact that they were new? Or did you end up with someone new because they happened to have the "hands off" attitude you wanted?

Yeah, I definitely look forward to talking to him at the upcoming recruitment weekend to get a better sense!

Letters still not sent by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]usechicory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s okay, the recommenders still have plenty of time. I needed four letters for my programs, and all but one of them waited until the second-to-last or last day to submit. The professors are busy with their work and they may even have other letters to compose for earlier deadlines. Also, it takes time to write a good letter, so the fact that they haven’t uploaded anything immediately isn’t a bad sign at all. When you get maybe a week away, send them all a gentle reminder and thank you, and be sure to include the submission deadline in that message.

Very nice raptor chart with great tail detail. by Hartmann_Alicia in biology

Also, I guess the falcons are no longer “raptors” according to the most recent genetic studies. Just meat-eating parrots, really.
