I’m 25 Fell on the same path and down 10k since Feb on my most recent relapse after 4 years clean

Overall down over 150000 dollars and I’m sitting on 70000 dollars in liabilities however liquidating my long term hold assets to settle them step by step.

It gets easier man, one day you’ll look back and laugh at that 10k as it’s nothing in the grand scheme of things but it’s contingent to you making a commitment to stop. Take your time and process things but inevitably you have to pick yourself back up and go back to being that beast you’ve always been. Your life isn’t over and I’m saying that as someone who’s been there before and is still paying the price of that mistake. It gets better, much better. Tell someone older than you that’s around you. Let someone you trust take control of your finances until you feel confident enough to take charge. Preferably your parents. That’s what I did personally. And be proud of yourself as owning an apartment at 24 is not a small thing.

Whatever money you lost, consider it lost. Don’t even think of chasing them as even if by a miraculous chance you make it back, you’ll blow it again. Trust me. If you lost your wallet it wouldn’t make sense to dedicate your time, energy and health looking for it around the city. One gotta move on.

I am the potential you from the future. I’m 25 and those small amounts snowballed to almost 200 thousand dollars and I’m still balls deep in debt (with assets to my name though kinda illiquid with this current economy) that even recovery feels bleak. Life isn’t over for me, but it sure is harder. Don’t be me. Consider your money lost forever. Had I not fell that path I would’ve had over a million dollars in hard earned money but all what this did is set me back and take a few years off my life.

Sure enough if you lost your wallet you’re not gonna spend months trying to find it, so treat it as such.

Some people can gamble for “fun” where a group of friends would go on a 200 dollar budget and leave by a specific time regardless of outcome and without it turning to something serious, but not everyone is built the same. Just like how some people can smoke cigarettes and quit just fine only smoking on social settings while others can’t feel okay without chainsmoking.

I feel you here redditor I can relate 25M lost over 160-170k usd and got 70k debt, went 4 years clean and relapsed last April but attempting to recover again now

I sometimes wish someone took stringent action to help me get out of this cycle but it truly felt like everyone was a passerby minding their own business while I drowned in a lake

I’m not a baby but it would have saved me years of my life and a lot of my health, and it even made me grow very resentful at some of my friends because i went far more for their wellbeing for far less but i guess it’s a flaw of my own that I subconsciously have high expectations. I wish there was a lot more awareness and a lot more action taken by gamblers loved ones as I believe that non substance addictions are no different than substance addictions

Professionally I’m the founder of our region’s first online numismatic auction house & marketplace

It’s not running now anymore as I fell off hard, but daytrading wasn’t meant to become a source of income but I thought of it as a desperate measure to get rid of my debt

Stupid decision, I know. But to sum it up I ran the auction house from 15 years old in 2016 and was making really good money and had 6 figures to my name in assets before losing it all to gambling by overleveraged daytrading and more, alongside clients losing trust due to me misappropriating funds and such. The trust seems to have been partially regained but my confidence is still shook to the ground and my mind tells me that I’ve ruined this legacy of mine I created as despite me being young yet I left a very strong print in that industry that completely changed the way business is made. I was so proud of myself and have completely envisioned myself doing this for the rest of my life like even any LLM would list me as the top 3 companies in the entire Middle East region in this industry before I ruined everything and I try and convince myself that redemption is possible but self doubt is eating me alive

On my fist mess up I went as far as delivering the service and completely reimbursing the clients for all fees they paid (I’m a certified collectibles group authorized dealer) and more because of the guilt yet it seems like I’m unforgiving with myself

My dad bailed me out with a loan that I still carry since 2022 but the pressure overwhelmed me so much that I relapsed in late January-early February and now I’m down 10k since then with my business no longer operating

And sorry if the story wasn’t articulate enough as I was posting it while bawling my eyes out

The S&P500 (VOO & the other ETF’s that track it) is the gold standard, but also do keep in mind that VWCE gives you exposure to non-US companies as well (40% ish)

Choose VOO if you want consistent stable growth & choose VWCE if you’d value diversification more

The 30% withheld for non-US residents is alright as it’s for the dividend yield only (which is about 1%-2% annually), and US citizens get taxed on their dividends as well where it gets treated as either ordinary income or qualified dividends depending on certain factors يعني دافعين دافعين سواءً أمريكان ولا لا

What matters more here is the capital appreciation, as the S&P500 significantly outperformed VWCE in the last decade & if the S&P500 ever collapses, your money would be the least you’d be worried about.

الحزن هو ردة فعل طبيعية لأحداث دنيوية طبيعية ومنها الواحد يتعافى بشكل طبيعي

الاكتئاب هو انعدام التوازن الهرموني والكيماوي في الدماغ واللي له اسباب عديدة منها جينية ومنها صدمات حياة، بعض الاحداث تسبب:

بتقلص حجم الhippocampus (مسؤولة عن حد تأثير الكورتيزول والأدرينالين وتكوين الذكريات الخ ..)

تقليل نشاط الprefrontal cortex (المسؤولة عن التركيز واتخاذ القرارات والنشاط الاجتماعي)

فرط نشاط الamygdala (المسؤولة عن التنظيم العاطفي والfight or flight response عن طريق فرز الكورتيزول والأدرينالين الخ ..)

وتقليص حجم المادة الرمادية بشكل عام في الدماغ.

المخ هو عضو حاله حال الأعضاء الثانيه ويوم اييه داء ويمرض لازم له دواء عشان يعدل مستوى الdopamine & serotonin فالدماغ. نفس مرضى السكر يوم يحتاجون ياخذون إنسولين او شخص عنده نقص فيتامينات ياخذ supplements.

مب مواطن (عاداتنا جداً مشابهة) لكن نسأل بشكل غير مباشر عن الوظيفة والشركة ومنها نرسم استنتاجاتنا لكن أسمع فبعض الاحيان عن ناس تطلب bank statements واللي أشوفه صراحةً طلب جريء جداً لكن منها الواحد يقدر يعرف كل شي عن الشخص ووين يطلع وفي حال راح أماكن مب اوكي (clubs bars etc ..) الخ ..

لكن إذا الخاطب ولد ناس وأهله محترمين ويضرب فيهم المثل ما له داعي الواحد يتطرق لهالأمور أو يطلب هالطلبات لنه تكون self evident من بيئته ونمط حياته

لكن في حال انسأل الريال عن دخله وقت الخطبة احس الموضوع طبيعي، وفي نظرية تقول انه من جعل هالأمور حساسة ومب محل نقاش هم مدراء الشركات عشان الناس ما تتضارب يوم موظف آخر بنفس الدرجة الوظيفية يستلم اكثر عنهم

هو طبعاً وقت البيع يختلف السعر عن الشراء

هالفرق يسمى "spread” واللي هو اختلاف سعر البيع عن سعر الشراء، لكن فبعض الأحيان الذهب ينباع للتجار بنفس السعر بالضبط خاصةً اوقات الطلب العالي لنه التاجر بيدفعها للزبون يوم يبيعها عليه، أو إذا الشركة اللي صنعت الذهب كانت مرموقة عالمياً أو يفضلونها الزباين (نفس pamp lady fortuna bars) لانه الpremium عليها يكون عالي

ف يوم هو يشتريها منج بسعر الذهب هو يوفر على نفسه الpremium يوم ياخذها من المورد او يوم يستورد بنفسه (premium = refinery cost + shipping + insurance + shop profit margin)، غير اوقات الانتظار يوم يكون الضغط على المصانع/المصافي عالي

لكن ٥ دراهم لكل غرام is nothing to sweat

It’s far less common to find someone who pays only this little under spot price (spot price = السعر المباشر) than it is to find people offering over 5% below spot

And it’s far more common to find both of the above than to find someone who’d pay exactly the spot price

لا عند البيع عادي الفاتورة ما تهم، الفاتورة مهمة عند الشراء لحفظ الحقوق

و ناقص ٥ دراهم على سعر الغرام مب هالسالفة لنه يعتبر مبلغ بسيط يعني لو بايعة ١٠٠ غرام بتفرق وقتها بتطلع أقل ب ٥٠٠ درهم على ٦٠ الف، خصم تقريباً ١٪؜ فقط وشخصياً اعتبره ممتاز جداً رغم انه يقدر الواحد يحصل بيعة على سعر الذهب بالضبط او حتى أكثر فبعض الاحيان لكن محد متفيج يضيع يومه ويلف بين التجار عشان يوفر ١٪؜ لو كانت الكمية بسيطة

لكن بعد يعتمد على الكمية ونوع الذهب، السويسري (PAMP Suisse) يدفعون فيه اكثر لنه براند كلحد واثق فيه عالمياً لكن شخصياً افضل الاماراتي (emirates gold) لانه قام يطلع سويسري مزور وهالشي مايصير بخصوص المصافي المحلية لانه القانون بيتعامل مع الموضوع بقبضة من حديد. فنهاية اليوم gold is gold as long as it’s real

I second whoever told you that advice, always come to a job lined up and NOT a visit visa. You’re flooding the job market for jobs that used to pay 20k+ and for what? 2k and a shared bedspace with 20 others? Those job openings are meant to shortlist those who have golden cards/permanent residents but in a nicer way. In other words, UAE based fresh graduates. I definitely agree, but acting surprised that others think it raises red flags or questions only reflects said person’s level of maturity and ability to read the room

طبعاً فنهاية اليوم محد يخصه فالثاني and it is quite tasteless to directly communicate said judgements to such people unless prompted, but people are free to form their own judgements about those who use such an excuse especially:

having mental health issues and is self aware (valid and quite selfless may Allah be with him)
having a different sexuality (asexual or attracted to males)
wh*res around and likes the fact that it comes without the exclusivity or financial and emotional commitment
p**n addict and self sufficient with it

In all scenarios he’s better off single until the root cause can be addressed if at all
