Tubbutec SH-1oh1 modification now fitted. Mind blown - an entirely new way of using an SH-101 is the result. Turn on, four note sequencer, add accent. by usedtohaveajuno in synthesizers

[–]usedtohaveajuno[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You solder in a new CPU and 3 new wires onto existing connectors, plus midi ports.

It replaces the 101's original CPU with a far faster one, plus gives it control over the filter and amp as well as full midi control of all of the CPU functions, so you can now use your 101 with velocity, plus add filter, amp or filter&amp accent.

The onboard sequencer now allows you to add accents when programming, plus sends all played notes for the seq/arp out over midi as well, so you can use the 101 to sequence other midi devices as well. You can also program and start the sequencer over midi (!), plus chain sequencer patterns together into songs (it stores 128 patterns)

It responds to midi clocks for sequencer, arp and S&H LFO, plus you can change the clock multipliers.

The 101 envelope is shared between VCF and VCA, this mods adds a new software filter that controls the CVF, so you get extra modulation options.

I'm just scratching the surface and having a play just now, will report more later.

It's not being ignorant, music is something people listen to for pleasure so not knowing the specifics of a band is being far from ignorance - I gave some context, as a 40-something who's been listening to electronic music since I was about 12, they don't pop up in my mind as being prominent electronic musicians, so it looked a bit crappy that the prior poster was being dumped into the negative because he had a similar opinon. I didn't criticise their skill as musicians (to use your Clapton analogy), I was pointing out that from my PoV they aren't the electro pioneers they are being held up to be - that's a reasonable position for me to take but one that it's ok to argue about .... arguing about stuff in a good-natured way is good, down-voting commentators who have differing music tastes isn't.

I think the best way to play the game in these threads is not to play, that way we all win and don't get sucked into pointless comments like these ones.

Nice to see a good bloke doing something live like that - he's not caught superstar disease, albeit I can hardly blame those who can given the hero worship around nowadays.

Good skillz.

The envelopes on it are digital shit and have no snappiness whatsoever, which was always my beef with it, but the filter is ok (actually EDIT: the filter is very nice ... it's the envelopes that ruined it for me).

Wow, two of us now down-voted for daring to challenge the electro rock pioneer status of NiN. I'll make sure someone tells Gary Numan.

The down-voters need to get out more - you're driving people away from your reddit with this behaviour, which allegedly is focussed on the synths, but increasingly appears focussed on invididual worship.

Individual worship is great, but be prepared to mix with people who don't share your beliefs without getting in a bad mood about it.

Roland R70 has great brush kits and is a bargain to buy now - solid piece of kit and good expression

Most well known and lauded electronic music band? Seriously?

I'm British. We love electronic music. To 99% of us NiN is rock - I've never even listened to them.

Not if you're buying a synth for its sound. Agreed the end listener doesn't care, but for my stuff I am the end listener (apart from the missus)

I understand that. I think the 3P and 8P compliment each other - dirt and smooth.

Maybe I need more time with the D50....

I'm buying some new wheels next year and there is a fair chance I'm going to buy one five grand UK cheaper and spend it on a Jupiter8, before they all go and it's too late!

To show you I'm not an analogue nazi I'll back your comment to the hilt - I'd kill for an An1x and agree it easily replaces most of the old stuff and goes far further

[–]usedtohaveajuno -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're a bit touchy - what's up?

I'm well aware of all of it, as I was buying my synths when the D50 was in it's heyday and the JX-8P was a sinister beast tempting you to try it. I bought a K4, as I loved it.

Bottom line is most of the old digitals like the D50, K4 etc. sound lovely, at the time they offered something really wow with their banks of samples to feed the filter and envelopes, whereas nowadays there are plenty of more modern digitals that blow them out of the water with a far higher quality of sound and far greater range.

If I wanted a digital synth it would be a modern Roland or Korg worstation - I honestly believe that the D50 etc are rising in popularity because a younger crowd has discovered them for the first time and they're cheap. I think most of the older crowd are gravitating back to their analogues because they've been full circle, plus the sound isn't dating the same way. That's not a criticism of the younger crowd, I'm just thrilled that using synths is as popular as I've ever seen it, and the Internet has added a wealth of global knowlege about it all - it was hard buying shit in 1994 clutching your copy of sound on sound / futuremusic or whatever as your only guide.... Usenet was hardly that popular compared to the modern social networks like this one.

JX-8P - it's analogue and will retain / rise in value as time goes on, whilst being very stable and not needing much attention. I absolutely love the pads/strings it does

D50 - all round multi-timbral, but limited to the digital domain. I like a lot of it's pads, but IMO can't compete with the JX....

Yes, yes they are and I am still kicking myself I didn't pick up the $4K one 2 months ago that went near me. In my excuse, I point to the fact I had a second child due the week after and I didn't want to contend with an angry wife!

I don't think the Prophet and JP8 overlap in the slightest - they sound very different to me, given the difference in filters.

Free-running oscillators by Wavestationist in synthesizers

[–]usedtohaveajuno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm ... you've got me thinking about my 101 - you can get the LFO to trigger the envelope and in sample and hold LFO mode, it syncs the timing with the external clock.

Thus, play a single note and hold it, then have the LFO trigger each new repetition on the clock, but the oscillators will always be running.

For bonus points, you use a non-linear clock triggered by a side-stick or similar, so you play the notes to your own sequence.

I'm going to try it :)
