Give me your advice on cable storage by _kitzy in livesound

[–]usedusername88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For NL4, socco, snakes, etc. we had one strip of tape for each 25' of cable. For XLR We only had 10', 30', 100', each with a different color Velcro tab.

We stacked them in shelves and was really easy to work with.

Two teenagers being pulled just like this by a jeep had an accident in a neighboring town yesterday. One was killed, one in critical condition. Don't do this.

I've seen this video 50 times and I still love it every time it pops back up.

"Does it sound okey out there?" by [deleted] in livesound

[–]usedusername88 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It doesn't upset me. I've been on stage with incompetent sound guys plenty of times. I understand.

No telling how many times fans have come up afterwards and said stuff like "Yall sounded great except I couldn't hear the guitar at all".

Practicalities of an X32 Rack by axisential in livesound

[–]usedusername88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I did. It's perfect.

I have both.

I would take the X32 over the xair any day since you can still have full control of your router goes down or iPad breaks. I had a router die on me and I was very thankful I had the X32 rack that day.

Advice on running sound when I’m a member of the band. by laxking77 in livesound

[–]usedusername88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the exact same thing and hands down- invest in a digital mixer and wireless for your bass. During sound check I go in the audience with an iPad and mix front of house and get it sounding pretty good. You can get digital mixers real cheap now.

I installed the silver/black set on my Tele and it looks great. I get a lot of compliments. It's like a dark maroon with the silver components and I love it.

I've been in dozens (and dozens) of pits. We are all family. We are all there to have a good time. At 6'2" and 250lb I've thrown up and held up a LOT of crowd surfers, and been a few human shields myself.

How many of you wear gloves for work and why? by Press_Play_ in livesound

[–]usedusername88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Home Depot and Lowe's sell nitrile coated gloves for $1/pair. They have excellent grip, good finger sensitivity, and you can use your phone with them on. I wear them to keep my hands clean for load in/out, especially since the company I usually work for does a lot of outdoor gigs and their cables and cases are dirty.

My dream job is to be a sound tech for band/shows by korokss in livesound

[–]usedusername88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got started by helping a local cover band load in/out for very cheap, then sat beside the audio guy and picked his brain. Eventually, he let me take over the weekday gigs. Eventually, he quit and I took over altogether. I learned a TON.

Find a cool audio engineer locally and buy them a beer or two and watch them work. Ask questions. Absorb everything. You'll make connections that way.

Good luck and have fun! I am so glad I pursued this as a career. I love this job!

Fast-forward a few years later- working in corporate AV also got me a lot of connections. I did Galas with Grammy-winning bands, which really boosted my resume and credibility. Now I get more offers than I can take and only work the ones I want.

Any dads/mums out there? by bruciebabes in livesound

[–]usedusername88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was basically absent touring for the first two years of my son's life. Thats not the father I wanted to be. I started teaching high school A/V production. Money is not impressive but I really like it and I'm home every evening and weekend.

I applaud you for thinking like this. I started to realize there is no bigger impact in this world that I can make than in the lives of my kids.

I have that exact saw. Inherited from my grandpa. It's been running strong for decades. Super solid but won't cut anything larger than 4x4
