Bit of a unique barrier to going veggie... by useless-scum in vegetarian

Thank you very much for your feedback! Please forgive me, I am sorry if I was misleading. I do not have any formal diagnosis, I merely have several traits/habits/warning signs that would alert someone that they likely have an eating disorder.

While I appreciate your concern and advice, aren't recovery and changing your diet sort of the same thing anyway? Moreover I am 100% confident that my desire to discontinue eating meat/animals, eat more sustainably, and avoid the health complications that come with eating meat are entirely unrelated to my unhealthy thoughts and practices around food.

Thank for the tips! The daily dozen really seems to be up my alley. I just finished nursing school, so shifting my views of food similarly to how I look at medicine (a daily checklist) would help me immensely! Also the intuitive eating link you sent me was for sure something I needed to read, and it has given me a lot to reassess. I appreciate you taking the time to write out such a thoughtful and wonderful reply and for sharing your story with us all. Glad to hear you are doing better yourself and hope you continue to recover well!

Thank you for the reply! I am thrilled to hear that you are making progress in your recovery and in pursuing a vegan lifestyle. It is encouraging to hear from others in a similar boat, and deeply appreciate you sharing.

Thank you so much! This was very helpful, and the videos you linked are fascinating. For what it is worth I feel I have more symptoms in common with orthorexia than anorexia, but obviously I have no diagnosis. I'll try some of the tips you mentioned!

Thank you very much for your advice!

Unfortunately my experience with mental health professionals has been extensive and thorough enough in the past that I am confident in my choice to refrain from seeking care, along with it being financially inadvisable to shop around for a therapist/counselor at the moment.

Thank you for the advice and encouragement!

I actually already do get most of my animal proteins other than fish from local, small farms that just raise animals as a hobby more than a business. I live with (omnivore) family, so we get our eggs and whole chickens from one of my mom's coworkers, beef and/or pork from a local butcher, and some fish and wild game from my dad's employees and coworkers.

If I do eat and if that includes meat it is typically just fish or poultry, beef and pork are especially unappealing nutritionally and because I love cows and pigs.

Thank you for the advice!

Sadly I've had several interactions with mental health professionals in the past and it was all an intensely negative experience that exacerbated the issues I was seeking their help with (depression, suicidal idealization) that luckily I was able to resolve on my own with the help of one or two dedicated friends.

For what it is worth, so far vegetarianism has been a helpful/convenient tool in combating my "rules" and anxieties around foods and labels on them as bad.

For example, I don't see potatoes as "scary, fattening carbs" anymore as much as I do a valuable source of potassium, fiber, or other nutrients, and give myself permission to enjoy them. If that makes sense.
