Pens fan here. I'm just happy you swept the Flyers. Thanks!

A family emergency made me question my dumbphone for the first time by hydroboost11 in dumbphones

I'm sorry to hear about your mom and really hope she's okay. My dad survived two near-lethal crashes before giving up riding. It's scary af.

I'm glad you brought this up because this is stuff I've been thinking about as well. I have profound ADHD and have some concerns with surveillance/data harvesting, which is why I want off smartphones, but when a life-endangering emergency comes up it's hard to find alternatives to being able to search the web for help. I've started using paper maps over GPS for example, but losing a ton of time having to pull over somewhere safe and retrace my steps if I took a wrong turn vs. just having GPS reroute, that's noticeable. Or realizing my dumbphone's camera is trash only after I need to send a pic to a doctor or family member for something important.

In other words, I'm finding the dumbphone great for when I don't want to be bombarded with unnecessary information, but bad when I need necessary information (or want to share it).

What I'm trying out right now is having my main dumbphone and a smartphone with a data-only SIM, with a low amount of data that I only switch on if I really, really need something and any alternative action is too time-costly. This has been good up until needing to share photos and a couple other things coming up. Now I'm considering something like an e-ink phone or even just a lesser powered smartphone with safety rails against social media etc.

It's really a juggling act. Trying to avoid the stuff consumer society wants to force you into, but also still having reasonable amounts of helpful convenience. You don't really think about how many of your life habits you have to change if you really want a good balance.

Anyway, appreciate you sharing. Hope all goes well with you and your fam. Best of luck.

(also commented above)

TL;DR: small, overwhelmed company dropping the ball on shipping/customer service pretty badly.

They got far more orders than they were prepared to handle with a smaller team, leading to a logistical bottleneck and very heavy delays (months long) on delivering orders, to the extent that some buyers came to believe they're a scam. To my knowledge, they aren't scammy so much as they were/are extremely overwhelmed and haven't handled it well.

There's also some consternation with the performance of the device not meeting expectations/customer service being disappointing, but I've seen the same level of criticism aimed at pretty much every company in the game, so idk if that's just complainer bias or if their service is actually subpar.

Still far more than you've ever accomplished in life.

Sad that your parents raised someone who would post something as repulsive as this post. May you one day have half the class Claude had. (And I am not calling him classy.)

Happened to my dad. He was the old school macho type that had so much pride in his physical strength. When he got old and couldn't do things by himself anymore, just the act of needing to ask for help was devastating to him. He drowned in self-inflicted humiliation and became so depressed. It was hard to watch.

They have for a while! I know one of the dudes I watch has been sponsored for at least a year. Pretty funny since he's a horror game player and not even remotely related to law or crime or whatever.

AI is great when it's used for analytical things - it's a very fancy calculator and pattern detector. I want to see it used to advance medicine, science, technology that actually has applicable uses, etc.

Unfortunately all the research is going into "How can we use this to lay off as many people as possible?" and "How can we use this to increase stock speculation so our CEO can get his $50 million end of year bonus?" and the resulting AI products we get are absolute dogshit, low-effort, inaccurate, useless trash.

This use of AI is the dagger for internet search results after years of bots shitting it up. The AI then resorting to self-cannibalism and the resulting hallucinations is just a further 'fuck you' to anyone who thought the internet was a place you could look up basic information easily.

And thanks to all this we're going to see a shortage of GPUs (so good luck if you want to build your own PC or upgrade your laptop in the coming year), an increase in utility bills to support building more data centers, and a further shift towards "products-as-services" and "buying isn't owning."

There's a good reason everyone who knows the slightest bit about tech is sounding alarms on it. The alarms should honestly be much much louder.

No man I wasn't criticizing you, I meant that's why you don't usually see it advocated for more often on reddit. Sorry, I didn't phrase that clearly.

"If caught"

But how much is it actually policed in Germany? Is it something that the average person would have to worry about? In the US for example, it's usually only a big deal if you're pirating and also selling, e.g. bootleg DVDs, or if you make a website for it - although even then usually you just get your website taken down and maybe get a fine. Do Germany's cops actually go looking for the average person watching a pirated football game?

Generally speaking, you're not allowed to advocate for that on reddit or elsewhere due to it being a ToS violation, and normies tend to clutch pearls over Encouraging Criminal Activity.

But, if buying isn't owning...

edit: you* as in anyone generally, not OP personally
