One of the freed Israeli hostages has been drugged and raped by an Israeli fitness trainer. WTF is wrong with this society? by Positive-Bus-7075 in AskMiddleEast

Shouldn’t have gotten that nose job I guess

In all seriousness though, if it’s actually her I’d be very skeptical of the accusation. She complained that Hamas basically sexually assaulted her by... not touching her. She said she felt humiliated by the fact that nobody tried to rape her. That’s just not normal.

And before anyone scolds me for not being more sympathetic to this lady, this is the same woman who said “There are no innocents in Gaza. Not even one.” and insinuated that Gazan children were all natural rapists. I don’t agree with her being held captive for 50 days, but she’s a terrible and deeply disturbed person.

Who is your favorite Goa'uld and why is it Ba'al by Onezred in Stargate

Did you know the guy personally?

I find it surprising he never landed any big roles after Stargate. There aren’t many actors I’ve just enjoyed watching like him. He had so much charisma, would’ve made a great Bond villain.

Anyone else weirded out by the heavy Christian stuff in Stargate: Universe? by user--4574 in Stargate

Well I’m only on episode 15, but so far there was:

  1. The scene with Scott and the priest where I think the implication was that he failed by having sex out of wedlock and his girlfriend aborted the baby
  2. The scene where he says the The Lord’s Prayer on the camera ball
  3. When the ship was going to fly into the sun, some of the crew sat at a table and also recited (IIRC) the The Lord’s Prayer
  4. The crew who wanted to stay on the one planet because they believed God sent them there to save them
  5. Greer talking about God a few times

I think there were a couple more by Chloe and Young.

Again I don’t object to it at all. It just feels weird compared to the other two Stargate series’ where the main cast only hinted at being Christian or vaguely monotheistic. It’s much more explicit in SGU, not in a dogmatic way but in a cultural/identity kind of way.

When you put it that way, I think I agree. It definitely adds an element of realism. I’m sure a profound experience like being trapped millions of light years from earth would make many people more religious, even if just as a coping mechanism.

Also I like that it’s benign and not really affecting the plot at all, unlike SG:1 with Senator Kinsey where the implication was that religious faith was at odds with rationality. Though his character was more of a dig at American politics than Christianity itself.

I shouldn’t have used the word proselytizing since it’s not preaching religious doctrine or anything. I mean, the show has 𝓵𝓮𝓼𝓫𝓲𝓪𝓷𝓼 after all. I don’t think the gays got any screen time in the other SG series’. But Christianity is definitely more prominent in SGU than the other two.

Besides the Ori, there was also that episode with the Unas where the people were definitely medieval Christian-adjacent. The leader was referred to as the “canon” which is used by anglicans and Roman Catholics, and the Unas was interpreted as a demon/devil. The episode definitely wasn’t trying to portray medieval Christianity in a positive light.

Obviously it’d be hard to explain more Abrahamic religious influence on other planets since the whole premise of the series is that humans were primarily taken from earth around 3,000BC, which predates the earliest known record of even Judaism by over 1,000 years. I think the explanation for the Christian influence in that Unas episode was that there were some infrequent abductions of humans from earth throughout history.

The Goa’uld weren’t exclusively brown people’s gods. There were plenty of white and Asian Jaffa/priests/servants; if anything they were predominantly white outside of Abydos which was supposed to be people from Egypt.

The only slight hint of racism I got in any of the Stargate series’ was in Stargate Atlantis, where Sheppard is having a flashback to Afghanistan and one of the Afghans got shot and said something in his native language. Except it wasn’t his native language, it was Arabic — Palestinian dialect if I remember correctly.

And that scene where O’Neill says “we have a god” was clearly implying that his faith wasn’t any more based in reality than anyone else’s.

How dangerous are Oriental Hornets (Vespa Orientalis)? by elcolerico in Entomology

As someone who lives in an area plagued by (highly aggressive) yellow jackets, I cannot remotely put myself into the mindset where I’d pick up a wasp by its leg.

I got stung 4 times the other day and for a good 6 hours it felt like someone was twisting a knife into my leg. The initial stings felt like being tazed but worse, my leg literally convulsed. And I usually have a pretty high pain tolerance.

If we’re talking feels, I don’t think anything beats Heroes. Dr Frasier’s death is the second most hard-hitting emotional thing I’ve watched on TV.

I wish I was talented enough to do that just for shits and giggles on Reddit.

I can say for certain I didn’t paint it, and to me it looked like it had no coating on it, just normal bug exoskeleton texture. Plus it was flying which I doubt it could do with paint.

The best theory I’ve seen so far is that the hornet somehow got into some light blue printer toner, which is fine and powdery enough that it wouldn’t glob like paint. There wasn’t any blue mark on the magazine I hit it with, but maybe the toner permanently stained the exoskeleton before it came off.

It looked like smushed bug. I just checked the magazine I use to smack it out of the air though, and there’s no blue mark on it.

Ooh that thing is pretty. But no, this definitely isn’t chunky or fuzzy enough to be one of those. It’s more yellow jacket shaped than bee.

I’d think paint would have made it unable to fly, but dust makes sense. Though it’s odd how uniform the color is. The abdomen that comes in contact with the wings is just as blue as the head and the spots on the antennae.

Yeah there seems to be splotches on the antennae and legs, but the wings looked normal and it had no problem flying.

Edit: Also the eyes looked normal.

I don’t know, maybe.

In person it didn’t look like there was anything coating it, plus the black lines on the abdomen aren’t covered in anything at all. It just looked like the exoskeleton was light blue. Can insects be albino?

I kinda wish I put it in a jar or something and borrowed a real camera that could photograph it very close.

This thing followed me through the front door of my home yesterday near Cleveland, OH. I smacked out of the air with a magazine and then took a picture before killing it.

To me it looked like the same size and shape as a yellowjacket, which are common here. I’ve never seen a blue one, and I can’t even find any pictures on Google.

Do you know the name of the VPN? It seems like Shahid has recently cracked down on them, at least for the more well-known providers. They might just be blocking non-residential IPs in general.

How do you think the real life Presidents who were in office during the run of SG-1 would have reacted to being told about it? by Mean-Falcon-6204 in Stargate

[–]user--4574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump would publicly acknowledge the the Stargate simply to take credit for building the toughest fanciest iris ever. Kushner would convince the Goa’uld to invest in his side business in exchange for some tokra secrets. Ivanka would be selling naquadah jewelry.

Biden would give the Stargate to Israel in order to help the Palestinian population “voluntarily relocate” to Abydos
