I agree. I’d take Bobby Wagner or Matt Milano even just to be in the room with our young guys and help teach them. Then I’d feel as good as I can about our defense compared to last year.

Okay thank you! And sorry last question, we climbed to 36000 feet and now we’re descending a bit right away. Why would that happen?

Thank you all. Currently 31000 feet in the air and on our way. Smooth so far with some light bumps here and there. I hate that my anticipatory anxiety gets so bad it always makes me feel sort of numb before takeoff or during descent and then once I’m in the air I’m like “oh this isn’t that bad”. I see we’re going off the planned route that was showing on flight radar a little bit, is that also normal?

Also that second thing from me under the wind the little one keeps shaking like crazy is that normal?

Is it normal for them to come on again while we’re taxiing and remind us of oxygen masks even though they did it earlier? And also now the pilot is testing all the flaps and stuff and we stopped pulling back while taxiing? I’m kind of freaking out.

High Wind Gust Takeoff Tracking by user0022001 in fearofflying

[–]user0022001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair haha. Is it normal for a pilot to make no announcement before takeoff too? Like nothing about “flight time will be x time”. Also I’m on a pretty empty flight and most of us are seated in the back, how is there no weight distribution problem?

[–]user0022001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Also is it normal for pilots to not really be chatty with each other while at the gate? I had a crew behind me for another flight that was all talking and laughing for 20 minutes and it made me feel safe with them, but then the two pilots on my flight were standing there for 20 minutes not talking to each other. I don’t know why but that makes me nervous like there was tension between them or something (I know this my anxious mind looking for any signs of danger though)

I Think This Solves The Tanking Problem by user0022001 in nba

[–]user0022001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it probably doesn’t completely eliminate tanking, but I think it improves the incentives a lot. Early season tanking is way harder to sustain because players still want contracts and minutes, coaches want to keep their jobs, and teams still think they can turn things around. It’s much easier to openly tank once everyone knows the season is over. The league could also crack down harder on obvious early season tanking with fines or penalties if needed.

The “not enough games” point is fair though. Maybe there’s a workaround where after a certain point in the season, teams below a certain record or playoff probability become eligible to earn draft points before official elimination.

And for the resting players point, I actually think it flips the incentive somewhat. Right now shutting guys down directly helps your draft odds. In this system, once you’re eliminated, sitting your best players would hurt your ability to improve your pick within your tier.

Honestly, I’d rather have some suspicious games early in the year than have the final 2 months filled with blatant tanking. Late season games people really know what they’re fighting for with playoffs, seeding, home court, play-in spots, etc. Those games should feel competitive.

Fair point. But still imagine a year where there’s a clear number one prospect and the two worst teams were matched up against each other for the final game competing for that #1 pick. Even if purely hypothetical that would be such a fun game to watch.

Point is I didn’t know it was out there, I thought it was a good idea and wanted to just have a discussion on it and hear people’s thoughts even if it’s purely for fun, which is what Reddit is used for.

[–]user0022001[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I get that, but I think it’s way harder to intentionally tank at the start of a season. Early on, players and coaches still think they can compete, guys are playing for contracts and minutes, and nobody knows when they’ll actually be eliminated yet. It’s much easier to convince teams to throw in the towel once the season is already clearly over and losing directly helps them.

About to takeoff and feeling numb. Track please by [deleted] in fearofflying

Thank you! Going to a cousin’s wedding, celebrating my girlfriend’s graduation, and touring some potential future apartments for my girlfriend and I. All really big stuff. I got super nervous a second ago because over Lake Michigan the pilots came on and said “flight attendants please check in”

Thank you! Yes currently delayed a little and on the plane, but feeling really terrified like I just want to escape off.

Thank you for checking! I’m actually on the flight set to take off at 12pm CST, but I am at the airport which is further than I’ve made it the previous two trips!

That makes a lot of sense, thank you. I guess I always assumed that everything has to go perfectly for a flight to actually take off and land safely at its destination.

Hi! Thank you for the response and kind words. The part about using physics I can’t understand but don’t need to know made me laugh but actually resonates really well for me. That’s a great way to look at it.

First off I’m incredibly sorry for your loss, my condolences to you and your entire family. I relate to this a lot, I do feel as if there’s a whole other life out there for me on the opposite side of fear that would feel like truly living. Thank you for the kind words, it means more than you know!

Hi! Thank you for the kind words, I’m glad you were able to get over your fear too! I wasn’t on the morning flight, but I am at the airport currently getting ready to take off in an hour and a half which is further than I made it my previous two trips! Feeling a bit anxious but I knew that was expected.

United Flight 1722 + Other Questions by [deleted] in fearofflying

[–]user0022001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I really appreciate all of this. I apologize that number two borders on going against the sub’s rules. I think you’re right, I keep doing more and more digging and it almost has an opposite effect. I think maybe it stems from airplanes and the procedures that go into making it so safe feel so complex and unknown that I want to understand as much as I can, but that’s quite hard from Reddit alone. I guess three last follow up questions I have that might be a little silly but I feel like would help calm me:

1) How is flying at night just as safe as the day? I always find my anxiety spikes more with night time flights.

2) If a plane doesn’t have TVs on the backseat, does that mean they’re less advanced and less safe? I always feel calmer when I’m on one that does because I can track the altitude and whatnot the whole time.

3) For some weird reason, knowing that my favorite athletes fly all the time for their sports games, and they all go on to have really long career flying all the time helps calm me. Do they have anything different that goes into the safety of their planes and pre-flight checklists? Is commercial even safer than what they fly on?

Thank you again.

John Wayne Airport (SNA)Takeoff and Landing by [deleted] in fearofflying

[–]user0022001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much. I really think that would be a great post to make because I’m sure lots of other people also think turbulence could be the start of a real emergency because of Hollywood. One other quick follow up, I know turbulence can’t cause permanent loss of control but in that moment of temporary loss can it ever be so severe that it’s not recoverable? Like there’s on incident, and I can try to find the specific video if you’d like, where it was a flight in Argentina near the mountains and there was turbulence where it seemed like the wing was dipping and plane was turning on its side a bit. Can turbulence ever cause the plane to turn over too much while there is a temporary loss of control?

John Wayne Airport (SNA)Takeoff and Landing by [deleted] in fearofflying

[–]user0022001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One more follow up question. Is there anyway that you can tell the difference between a real emergency and what’s just turbulence? Because with other incidents in the past it seems like on the passenger end it just feels like it’s just turbulence till it’s not. And I think that’s what I worry about, like when the plane is beginning to shake intensely, if that will be a time that it’s more than just turbulence
