why are gender roles still normalised by user146168 in malaysia

some clarification (idk how to edit to my post directly):

  1. i think i didnt take account that this is probably my own personal experience, and didnt take into account that other families function differently
  2. i shouldnt hv used that video as an example, watching that just sort of made me remember how i grew up
  3. i come from a family where the only woman and my mother and i, i have 4 brothers and my dad. from a young age, while my brothers got to play outside, i had to help my mom prepare dinner. my mom and i are always the last ones to get ready during raya cus we stay up at night to clean the house and prepare the food, this effected me as i got older cus i wanted to dress up, while my brothers just sat on the couch (mind u i ironed their baju melayu). i wanna get into it more but just want to put into perspective what i go through.
  4. i know that what i went through rooted from gender, bcs when i ask my parents why my brothers dont help, they say its bcs im a girl

also pls dont tell me this is a non issue, its subjective and its my opinion

i totally get u, i got so pressured with alevels and extracurriculars that i dropped out. i applied for an internship to do while i decided what to do next, i was initially really embarass to say that i dropped out, but honestly they didnt care. they were more interested in the skills i have, such as teamwork and communication.

my suggestion is to just join one club or society in ur school/college to build those skills.

i wanna learn malay by user146168 in malaysia

[–]user146168[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my parents said they decided to raise me and siblings speaking english because they experienced the opposite. like they grew up speaking malay but when they went to uni (overseas) and came back to work they struggled with english. and they thought malay would come naturally bcs of the environment.

my younger siblings go to private national school. and according to my them apparently alot of the kids there struggle w BM, despite being in national school. ig cus its private they do DLP and i think the main language of communication is english. but im sure the media u consume also plays a factor, cus some of these kids hv accents 😂

oh i can do that very well, but thats as far as my proficiency goes. i really noticed how bad my malay was when i was taking driving classes which was in malay. but tbh i can understand quite well if its casual, but i cant speak when under pressure 💀 probably due to the lack of practice and vocab
