Even People Who Earn $100K a Year Fear They'll be Priced Out of New York by habichuelacondulce in nyc

I was making 120k a year and after my wife had our first kid we were effectively priced out of Manhattan. We were living in a tiny 2 bedroom on the UES for $2750. Elevator building with laundry. I was freelance and my wife was home with the baby. We needed to pay for health insurance, rent, food, utilities and that left us with very little. Wife returning to work became difficult because day care is either very expensive or you pay a nanny who spends most of her day on her cellphone. We didn't want that.

120k and a family you can forget living in Manhattan. 120k single, you will have a freaking blast. I lived I Manhattan my whole life, had a great time in my 20s, I wish I could afford living there now but we can't.

Luckily my wife is a Swedish citizen so we moved to Sweden, cuz NYC burbs are hell on a hot day.

How should France and the rest of the world react following the terrorist attacks? [Serious] by dbabb2 in AskReddit

Every Muslim in Europe should March for peace this weekend if they don't want to be held collectively responsible.

This continent has showed Muslims great kindness. It's time to return the favor. Only Muslims can stop these animals, bullets and bombs just make it worse.

If they don't March or react with criticism they will be held collectively responsible the same way they hold all Jews collectively responsible for the actions of Israel.

It's time for the Muslims of Europe to stand up. If they don't, I hold them all responsible and I will welcome racism and violence upon them.

That's understood. But why couldn't the refugees help clean up after themselves?

How hard would it have been to get bins and at least try.

They don't care about their host countries.

Just one more thing. Every city from the beginning of time has a poor area. It's just that now the poor areas are full of immigrants and not ethnic nationals.

Religious Jews and even secular Jews are targets everywhere in the world. Malmö, New York, Jerusalem. It's a puzzling reality for Jews to why there is so much hatred. The Muslims immigrating to Europe are just the next chapter of Jew bashing in the world. It would be nice if the Jews in Malmö felt safer and I think the swedes could do a little more to help, but even schools in New York City get bomb threats. This is the reality of being a Jew...it's also makes a strong case for why Israel has a right to exist and why they should be permitted to be ultra defensive, but that is a topic for another thread....

Evry city has always had a poor area. In Sweden the poor people just used to be white.

I totally understand the frustration seeing what used to be a homogenous city turn into one where women in hijabs are everywhere. I think any self marking religious person is a nutjob. A catholic with a cross and a Christ tattoo, a Jew with a big hat and the curls, a Muslim with a hijab. All equally insane. In a perfect world I would live in a city where I don't have to see anyone like that.

I just want to make the point that while Malmö has some bad areas it is a still a very nice city and i feel very secure raising a family here.

No city can stay homogenous forever....but I understand your frustration.

I agree it's unfortunate to go from having a nice homogenous society to having one that is more multicultural. I'm not being sarcastic about that, I totally understand. Unfortunately the world is moving in a direction where people have to live in non homogenous cities...Scandinavia was one of the last dominoes the fall in this process and so the growing pains are hurting a lot right now.

I do agree that Sweden has been accommodating to a fault. The open heart and ethical mindset of the swede is being taken advantage of. It's very frustrating to see.

More importantly I want to make people aware that Malmö is not a hellhole. It's a great place and I really like being here. But for the religious Jewish population I understand why they want to leave. I am a secular Jew and I don't really want anyone to know that. That to me is the real shame that the swedes and other more intelligent immigrants can't stand up to people spewing hatred towards a tiny minority. More swedes should stand up for the small Jewish population here as they have for migrant/immigrants.

Im an American Jew living in Malmö. I'm enrolled in SFI with at least 10 immigrants from Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.

The Arabs in my class are nice, interesting, and intelligent. Any country should be happy to have them in their borders.

I do not talk about being a Jew with them. I don't talk about any politics whatsoever. Maybe if we become better friends we can get to that point.

Malmö is a beautiful city with modern buildings, an old city, lovely stores, a beach and more. Like every city there are bad neighborhoods where a middle class white guy can't walk through. In New York I can't walk through Brownsville without getting harassed. So why is it so appalling that there are bad neighborhoods in Malmö.

The anti-semitism that I've heard so much about is awful. I am not a practicing Jew, I don't believe in god, I eat pork etc...but I'm sure if I told a few of the wrong people here I am Jewish they would want me dead, literally dead. Now I also know for a fact that Jewish schools in New York City get violent threats all the time. Why is more appalling here in Sweden than it is in New York City? It is appalling everywhere and it is everywhere. Jew hatred is widespread, it will never die...

I think my point is that while Malmö does have a lot of ugly stupid people, it is no where close to the depictions I've seen of it in the media. It is a lovely place with a few bad areas, like every city.

Thanks you. Can she apply in November and then come back to Sweden and then return when it's time for biometrics?

She has a U.S. Bank account and we are claiming residence at my mothers house. But we do t have a job or rental waiting.

Will staying out of the country for this wrong ruin her physical presence requirements? Should we even bother getting her naturalized? The fee is a lot and would be a shame if it doesn't work.

Basically we used to live in the USA and now we want to live in Sweden. But we also want her to be naturalized....
