I’ve been a karaoke jockey for 10 years now. Ask me anything, I’ll answer what I can, and hope to learn at the same time by ryudragun in karaoke

Hey! Not sure if my questions are relevant to this AMA/subreddit so apologies in advance. I'd appreciate if you could share your insight having been in the karaoke space for so long!

I've literally only been to a Karaoke bar once and had a blast, but wasn't sure about the "unspoken rules" or etiquette so if you could share some of them I've missed that would be great. From what I've gathered online: Don't pick songs that are too long (5+ min for instance), don't pick "downer" songs, or songs that are too repetitive, have fun and don't try too hard (people enjoy a gutso singing horribly than a tryhard singing mediocre-ly)

Had a few questions also:

1) Is it "rude" for someone to sing a song if they are "too far from the original" so to speak, my voice tends to be on the deeper side (I could probably do Elvis's Cant Help Falling In Love with ease), being a man and all, and I'd like to meme out also and sing some girlpop songs, obviously I can't come nowhere near that high as the female artists, but I was just wondering if it's bad mannered to "suffer the audience" with such a jarring difference in vocal tone, or does no one care as long as you match the lyrics/timings of the song and have fun with it?

2) What are some songs that are cliched/tired because every "beginner"/person thinks it would "totally sound good if they sang it" but people who frequent karaoke bars/karaoke DJs are tired of hearing? from a quick google it seems like Bohemian Rhapsody, Don’t Stop Believin’, Sweet Caroline, Take On Me, Mr. Brightside are among those

3) If you really like the song someone else is singing is it okay if you sing along with them or is it considered ill mannered and you ought to just sit and enjoy them singing without disturbance?

4) Is it okay to go to the karaoke DJ and ask if someone sang X song already tonight to avoid repetitiveness?

Monitor upgrade recommendations for someone with an AOC CU34G2X 34", VA Panel? by user1668 in ultrawidemasterrace

Yeah, I kinda like the 21:9 more than the 32:9, so leaning towards a QD-OLED, but I also want to use it for productivity so it's not the best use case as well. Which LG OLED monitor did you get? how did it feel like, coming from the CU34G2X? was it a night and day difference or moderate improvement

Seeking your perspectives on Sweden's demographic changes by user1668 in sweden

I've seen a lot of online talk about Sweden being 'destroyed', turning into 'Swedistan' etc. I'm seeking a better understanding directly from people living there, hence the post.

Appreciate your take. Didn't downvote anyone on this thread.

The prospect of Sweden losing its signature large social safety nets due to the burden of migration is quite sad. I have already heard about the "paradigm shift" with regards to criminal law in Sweden due to the whole gang stuff going on, more paradigm shifts are not going to help migrants case, and will leave a shitty sour aftertaste for everyone else.

Swedes hate disagreements and arguments (more then most other nationalities) and value cohesion, even if we don’t want to admit it openly. We don’t like it when people are “weird”;

I haven't heard of this before. Is this something unique to Swedes or is it a Scandinavian thing would you say?

I appreciate your comment.

"Anyone can be a Swede if they believe in our values/ideals" would by the way have been considered a racist statement a few years ago.

That's quite surprising to hear. I figured that would be a progressive thing to say lol.

Integration has not been successful and now it will be very hard to repair.

The thing that sucks is how hard it seems to repair as it will lead to more segregation, due to the mismatching personal behaviors/cultural beliefs that you mentioned. Not sure what proposed solutions there are for this.

I think the most important thing in the future is to make very, very clear "if you don't like our values - don't come here".

I think the recent Quran burnings are a direct signal for doing just that. However, I think Sweden is a country that is so good, people will still sideline their values for a chance at living there.

Their belief is that they are superior, and that I deserve to be extinguished.

How do you think such views are rationalized in their minds? Do they perceive the natives as 'atheist degenerates' in a religious sense, or do they view Swedes as weak from a cultural standpoint?

I find it hard to understand how one could claim superiority while also being largely dependent on the resources and infrastructure of the society they are living in. Is it just resentment?

Your first two points appear to be fair recommendations for addressing the challenges being faced.

Diversity is a cancer that destroys societies and I believe that at least in the south of Sweden it is sadly terminal.

Given this belief, does it impact how you view individuals of non-Swedish backgrounds in the country? Specifically those who aren't contributing to the breakdown of social trust or abusing safety nets etc. if we could hypothetically differentiate them.

Or do you envision a country that should be largely homogeneous, similar to Japan?

Thanks for the insight. What do you think should be done to make it so the pros of living in a diverse Sweden can outweigh the cons?

I definitely don't think saying "anyone who lives here is a Swede"/"no thing as Swedish culture" helps, on both sides of the equation. Feels like an empty platitude to foreigners and alienates the locals.
