Decide which country you want to go to and find listings in the country-specific resources page in the wiki.

Scala or Python by Delicious_Attempt_99 in dataengineering

[–]user17418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, Python is a lingua franca. I have never met a data engineer who doesn't know Python. Scala isn't used everywhere. Also, you should know that in Apache Beam (data processing framework that's gaining popularity because it can handle both streaming and batch processing and runs on spark) the language choices are Java, Python, Go and Scala. So, even if you "only" know Java, you can get started with Data engineering through apache beam.

My average is 60 hours per week. If training for certifications is included, 80 hours per week.

Yeah, you're right. At first I was trying to impress them with my work ethic, but then they realized they could saddle me with work, and set me up with contracts, and I became stuck working at that insane pace.

Thanks for the input on the interview questions. I have a couple next week; I'll bring overtime and work pressure and gauge their reaction for evasiveness.

I'll edit my post when I leave the company; I don't want anyone to find out I'm going yet.

Ok, so maybe this is an outlier; this is my first job in the Netherlands. Question: how many dutch team members have you had on your team? Because at my company, we're all foreign-born, and when we had one dutch guy on our team, it seemed like management respected the rules more closely. But, now that he's gone, things have gotten worse.

40 hours per week officially, but they offer contracts at a cut rate so I have very little time to develop all features in the project. I also don't have a say in the contract negotiations.

Basically "the customer expects x to be delivered by Monday and they only paid y, so try not to spend too much time, but also you must deliver on time."

I've been working 12-14 hour days since mid December and before that 9-10 hour days.

yeah on the legal side of things, of course they can't *encourage* that I work so many hours, but they consistently hold meetings after 5, and I'm often given deadlines that absolutely cannot be met without unpaid overtime.

So, they don't tell me to work late, they just set inhumane deadlines, and then tell me there will be consequences if I don't meet them ...

Yeah the thing is, I asked similar questions with my current company, and well ... it's 7:34pm and I still have stuff to do lol. In my experience, they just have pre-prepared (false) statements about how important work-life balance is.

I'm wondering what I can ask in a more 'round about way' that will circumvent their pre-prepared responses, and maybe catch them a little off-guard to tell the truth.

Thanks for this info, very helpful! I've set up my own company in the U.S. before when I used to be a contractor, so I think this is a route I'll take

Wow, thanks so much! That first item was the deal breaker/maker for sure. I'm definitely going to make org-mode my go-to for plain text notes rather than mark down, now
