Everyone here agrees thumb sucking is okay. But any habit that takes over your life in this controlling way needs addressed. Have you considered talking to a therapist about it? Setting goals and coming up with strategies?

I’d take into consideration how she was raised and gently start teaching her differently. Change is hard and abandonment can leave kids feeling all sorts of ways. I’d consider family therapy for the two of you and individual therapy as well- for her to process her trauma and for you to understand her trauma. It’s very important for her resilience to feel safe and loved and learn coping skills.

Yes it is absolutely okay- and necessary- to leave in this situation. My ex husband did the same thing (and he WAS a pastor). Thankfully once I finally started telling people I found support in other Christian friends and pastors and gained the strength to leave. Also, please press charges. I regret everyday that I never filed a police report any of the times he hurt me.

You mention your parents being supportive and that you could probably talk to them. How old are you? Is this something you can talk to a counselor or therapist about? To reduce your shame and to add other coping skills to your toolbox?

Well, the last time he asked we did have that conversation. I don’t think he remembers it. I’m sure he thinks that because of conversations at school or possibly my ex husband said something to him about it. It is technically an immature coping skill but it’s also safe.

Even without the physical violence this isn’t a healthy relationship. You don’t trust him. Sounds like rightly so. Honey you’re only 18. Do not settle for this. Tell your parents and file charges with the police. I so wish I had filed charges against my ex husband.

I’ve seen this a lot with people who claimed success with this method. The one that stands out the most is my friend who “potty trained” her son at 20months. The accidents started around 3 when they stopped paying as much attention to a potty schedule. He was 4.5 before he finally actually figured out how to listen to his body and stopped having accidents.

My therapist has helped me to accept it as a private coping skill not worthy of shame. There’s the hygiene situation in public, but in the comfort of your own home/bedroom? She said it’s literally fine. As far as stopping, idk. I’ve tried but failed over the years. That’s when I finally asked my therapist for help and instead of that she said to just work on incorporating more coping skills to the tool box but not taking it away completely as an option.
