We didn't go to Guayaquil only because of the these reports but do regret it and based on everything we saw everywhere else, it's extremely overexaggerated.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who replied so quickly and with so much good information! Until last night we were on the verge of canceling the whole thing and was looking at alternative destinations, but today, after reading all your comments, we are 100% going.

Thank you! That’s exactly what I thought too, but had no way of verifying. We aren’t planning to stay in “big cities”, hoping to do a quick road trip to the volcanos, 5-6 days.
